    o signicant non-compliance. The division advocates solid waste reduction,

    reuse and recycling, and provides grant assistance to selected projects.

    The ADEQ strives to protect and enhance the states environment through

    regulatory programs, proactive programs and educational activities. While the

    CALiforniA environMentAL proteCtion AgenCy

    The Caliornia Environmental Protection Agency is charged with developing,

    implementing and enorcing the states environmental protection laws that

    ensure clean air, clean water, clean soil, sae pesticides and waste recycling and

    reduction. Departments are at the oreront o environmental science, using

    cutting-edge research to shape the states environmental laws.

    Ocially known as the Department o Resources Recycling and Recovery,

    CalRecycle is a new department within the Caliornia Natural Resources

    Agency and administers programs ormerly managed by the States Integrated

    Waste Management Board and Division o Recycling.

    CoLorADo DepArtMent of puBLiC HeALtH AnD environMent

    Its goal is to improve the quality o the environment and public health orthe citizens o Colorado by continuously improving eorts to ensure proper

    management o hazardous materials and waste.

    The Hazardous Materials and Waste Management Division:

    Regulates solid waste and materials management (recycling) acilities

    and hazardous waste generation, storage, transportation, treatment and

    ConneCtiCut DepArtMent of environMentAL proteCtion (Dep)

    The DEP conserves, improves and protects the natural resources and environmento the State o Connecticut. The DEP regulates, monitors, inspects and enorces

    and licenses procedures that help control air, land and water pollution in order to

    protect health, saety, welare and natural resources. The DEP also improves and

    coordinates the states environmental plans, unctions and educational programs in

    cooperation with ederal, regional and local governments, other public and private

    organizations and concerned individuals.

    The Materials and Waste Management Division involves ensuring the proper

    management o wastes, chemicals and other materials that is critical to the protection

    fLoriDA DepArtMent of environMentAL proteCtion

    Responsible or environmental management and stewardship and is one

    o the more diverse agencies in State government, protecting the air, water

    and land. The Department is divided into three primary areas: Regulatory

    Programs, Land and Recreation, and Planning and Management.

    The Division o Waste Management works closely with the Departments

    district oces to implement state and ederal laws to protect the environment

    rom the improper handling and disposal o solid and hazardous wastes. This

    includes regulatory programs or waste acilities and pollutant storage systems,

    and non-regulatory activities such as nancial and technical assistance or

    recycling and waste reduction. The Division also oversees and contracts or the

    cleanup o sites contaminated with petroleum products, drycleaning solvents

    or other hazardous wastes.

    (DCA) environMentAL MAnAgeMent

    The DCA helps with Georgias solid waste management eorts primarily in

    our ways:

    1. Planning the states solid waste management eorts and assisting local

    governments in planning to meet their own solid waste management

    needs.

    2. Gathering, analyzing and dispersing inormation on the states solidwaste management and waste reduction eorts.

    3. Oering technical assistance and training in waste management issues

    Hawaiis lands rom pollutants that endanger people and the environment, and

    iDAHo DepArtMent of environMentAL QuALity (DeQ)

    DEQ ensures clean air, water and land in the state and protects Idaho citizens

    rom the adverse health impacts o pollution. As a regulatory agency, DEQ

    enorces various state environmental regulations and administers a number o

    ederal environmental protection laws including the Clean Air Act, the Clean

    Water Act, and the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act. DEQ manages a

    iLLinoiS environMentAL proteCtion AgenCy: BureAu of LAnD (BoL)

    The BOLs goals are to protect human health and the environment by

    ensuring that hazardous and solid waste will be managed in a sound manner,and to reduce or control risk to human health and the environment by

    overseeing the cleanup o contaminated sites.

    The BOL is responsible or the protection and restoration o land and

    groundwater resources in the State o Illinois. The BOL administers a broad

    variety o solid and hazardous waste management and cleanup programs. BOL:

    but it can also help them save money, improve eciency and ease regulatory

    The mission o the Bureau o Waste Management is to minimize the health and

    environmental impact associated with the generation, storage, transportation,

    KentuCKy DiviSion of WASte MAnAgeMent

    The Kentucky Division o Waste Management is a state agency operating

    under the umbrella o the Kentucky Department or EnvironmentalProtection (DEP). The divisions mission is to protect human health and

    the environment by minimizing adverse impacts on all citizens o the

    commonwealth through the development and implementation o air, equitable

    and eective waste management programs.

    The division consists o eight branches: Program Planning and

    The Waste Permits Division within the Oce o Environmental Services
