The First Stitch President’s Message - January 2017

Dear SPS ASG members,

It has been an honor to serve as your Presi-dent this year and I thank you for electing me for another term. I am grateful to our wonderful CAB members who have been so supportive and have helped me with my “learning curve”. Our CAB works hard to make your ASG experience great.

As I write this there are 12 days until Christmas and like all of you I am busy and overcommitted. I am putting the final touches on our Christmas decorations. As some of you know I decorate to the max for the season. It is a lot of work but I love it. Every year my family hosts a post-holiday Open House. We have done this for many years and find after the New Year is a perfect time to have a party. It is our last hurrah of the season. We love inviting our friends into our home and you are all invited to enjoy one last party, eat good food and enjoy. It is held January 7th, from 4:00 pm on into the wee hours of the morning. Please come, bring friends and enjoy. You were all invited.

Our chapter has had a great year with many great classes and opportunities to share and learn. One of my goals was to offer free classes to our membership and I am happy to report we have had several this year, including the Mondo Bag and Polymer Clay Buttons.

In the New Year we have several great workshops coming up and I would encourage you to take advantage of the

opportunities SPS ASG presents for your enjoyment. Once again we will be sponsor-ing an ASG style show at Sew Expo in Puyallup. The style show will be on March 5th. Please plan on entering your creations. Remember, we are looking for a variety of all needle arts not just clothing.

ASG needs to be our Happy Place. Several issues have come up where members feel their input is not of value and their feelings have been hurt. I know none of us would intentionally hurt someone but I urge you that no matter what is presented our re-sponse needs to be one of respect and kindness. Be aware of the tone of voice, our actions and the looks on our faces. We want all members to have fun and to go away from each meeting feeling uplifted, inspired and excited to come back. As members of SPS ASG we all need to take responsibility for each member’s experi-ence, making each meeting worthwhile and enjoyable.

We have had several informal gatherings between CAB meetings where members and CAB have share concerns and goals. These have been very successful. They are advertised and you are all welcome to attend and share. It is important to com-municate with each other and this is a great tool to foster open discussions.

I am looking forward to a great 2017.

Have a blessed and prosperous New Year.

Marilyn Lawler

Communications: June Scott (Chair ) gave statistics on the rate emails and e-blasts are being opened by the membership. The “open” rate is 63%, meaning more than one-third of the members are not seeing the information. She noted that ASG-SPS Communications emails may be going into spam. June also noted that only 38 members have joined the SPS Face-book Page.

Historian/Sunshine: Aletha Gilbreth (Chair ) sent four “Get Well” cards (Utahna Slater, Louvel Johnson, Leslie Wornell, Dolores DeHon), three “Thinking of You” cards (Marlys Baker, Linda Duff, Ann Adkins), and one “Sympathy” card (Annette Arnold).

Utahna Slater (Chair, South) has two new co-leaders for the Sew Happy NG: Joanne Philumalee and Sherri Barrett. Doreen Rabe, NG leader for Pattern Perfectos, report-ed her group has changed its name to “Sew Crazy.”

Annual Meeting Update: Nadeen Ward (Chair ) repor ted on this year’s Annual Meeting. (See report, attached.) Nadeen stated the 2017 theme is “E is for Embellishment.” Task as-signments for next year’s Annual Meeting were distributed.

National/Local Community Service: Aletha Gilbreth (Chair) said the chapter will continue making pillow cases for the hospital and pads for Days for Girls. She would like to include adult bibs as one of our community service projects. SPS donates to Children’s Hospital, Mary Bridge Hospital, Fisher House and other organizations in need.

Style Show: Bev Mills and Eileen Moebius (Co-Chairs) were not present. Judy encouraged everyone to submit their application form early, or as soon as possible. The deadline is January 15, 2017.

NEW BUSINESS:

Spring Fling: Mar ilyn brought up a concern regarding members teaching classes taught at Spring Fling to their NG’s as class information may be proprietary. Discussion followed. It was decided that members will be asked to refrain from teaching a class taught at Spring Fling until they first talk to the teacher of the class. The teacher may be available to pre-sent at a NG meeting. When this is not possible, it would be

more respectful to the teacher if a member were to request permission to present the class before actually teaching it at their meeting. It was acknowledged that it is difficult to re-strict members as so much information is available on the web and in free domain. Yolandatheresa Gray-Thomas volunteered to draft a “Respect Statement” regarding use of patterns and other materials provided at Spring Fling. This statement will be available for review at the next CAB meeting.

Chapter Banner: Sue Woods purchased a Groupon Dis-count for a 2’ x 6’ indoor/outdoor banner. June Scott volun-teered to help with the design of an appropriate banner for SPS. Sue will order the banner before the end of the year.

Name Badges: Roxanne Cassidy is the new person for em-broidered name badges. NG leaders will be furnished with temporary name badges to give to new members until their permanent ones arrive. June Scott will prepare the temporary names badges for this purpose.

Home-baked Goods: Mar ilyn Lawler will br ing treats for the Fire Department Staff next CAB meeting in January.

Next Meeting: Sunday, January 8, 2017, 1:30 pm @ Pierce Fire and Rescue Station #66, 9813 – 128th Street, Puyallup [training room at rear northwest corner of the building].

Meeting adjourned at 3:30p.

Respectfully submitted,

Sue Woods Chapter Secretary

Thank you Lucine for contributing.

Better luck next time to all.

Lucine will be entered in the drawing for a free membership for being a Mystery Mem-

ber.

January Mystery Member Hints

I have been a member of ASG for many years and attend 2 meetings a month (Fashionistas and Sew Fittingly.) My Mother did not sew but we had a treadle sewing machine at home that I use to practice on. In Junior High I had a good home-economics teacher who was a great influ-ence. I followed her example and majored in home-economics education in college and then became a home economics teacher and sewing instructor. Throughout the years I have taught my daughter and granddaughters to sew. I like to attend sewing classes (garment sew-ing) whenever I have a chance with visiting instructors or presenters. Sew Expo is great. I can always learn more. I have always been intrigued when you take a flat piece of fabric and convert it into a gar-ment. Consequently, I like to learn and will continue to learn about fitting garments.

Member Guess

Please submit your Mystery Member guess to June Scott, [email protected]

If you guess correctly, you’ll be entered

into the drawing for a year of free membership. Draw will be held at the

Annual Meeting (101465)

SPS members, Nancy Hill, Sherryl Pfaff, Marlene Thompson, Roxanne Cassidy, Nancy Loiselle, Mary

Collen, Starr Kanikeberg and June Scott attended the Floriani Embroidery Event in early November.

The event was put on by Quality Sewing and held in the Pavilion Building at the Puyallup Fair-

grounds. Two full days of team-sewing, making great projects using top-of-the-line machines. Mar-

tha Pullen was a special guest lecturer and shared her experiences of making beautiful heirloom gar-

ments and tips on how to build your own business with your embroidery machine. She also brought

her Trunk Show!

The gifts for attending were awesome! In addition to the projects completed, everyone received

kits for each project along with instructions and the embroidery designs. There was a 2-DVD in-

structional video on Basics to Beautiful Stabilizing Techniques, plus a Quick Reference Guide match-

ing fabric types with the best type of Floriani stabilizer to use and a reference list of the stabilizers

and the descriptions for each product along with samples. We also received the Floriani Thread

Converter, a color chart and a dozen spools of thread in great colors. There were three design sets;

a Christmas Card Collection, Christmas Shadow Work and a Christmas Trapunto Tree Skirt project.

Everything necessary to put our embroidery machines to work at home. There was also a Software

Guide to read up on Floriani’s Total Control digitizing software, just in case you were in the market

for taking your embroidery to the next step. As if that wasn't enough, there were prizes and several

of us were lucky enough to win design sets.

As an added bonus, ASG members who attended receive extra goodies directly from RNK Distrib-

uting! WOW, what a great deal.

Thank you to the Quality Sewing Staff for all

their hard work to make sure we all had fun.

And, a special thank you to RNK for supporting

American Sewing Guild members.

It was a great weekend!

June Scott

If a Floriani Event sounds like fun to you, then you’re in luck. Quality is offering two more events in January! All ASG members ... and ONLY ASG members ... who attend one of the Floriani classes currently being offered by Quality Sewing will receive an ADDITIONAL FREE GIFT valued at over $200.

There’s a special Floriani Event with Canadian digitizer Trevor Conquergood as Guest Speaker January 13 or 14 for only $49

~or ~

Floriani & Alex Anderson….Hands on Quilting – January 28-28 for only $129
