Boston

Boston was once a very important port town. At one point Boston’s port was busier than London’s.

According to legend Boston is named after st botolph. It is said he came to the area in the 7th century and built a monastery and church next to an existing settlement. The settlement was renamed Botolph’s tun (town)

Events.

St. Bolotph’s church was built during the 14th century. The tower known as the Stump was added between the early 15th and the early 15th century. It stands 272 feet tall. For century’s it added as a land mark for sailors.

In 1281 Boston suffered a fire which destroyed much of the town.

In1125 boston held its first annual fair.

Herbert Ingram (born 1811 died 1860)

Herbert Ingram was an important person in Bostons history in 1842 he started a newspaper in London called the illustrated London News, it was the first newspaper of its kind. He was also was responsible for bringing fresh drinking water to the town because he paid for deep bore holes to be drilled allowing fresh drinking water fresh water to be pumped. Boston remained a hotbed of religious dissent. In 1612 John Cotton became the

vicar of St. Botolph’s and, although viwed askance by the Church of England for his non-conformist preaching, became responsible for a large increase in Church attendance. He encouraged those who disliked the lack of city of Boston, Massachusetts bay company, and later helped to found the city of Boston Massachusetts [1630] which he was instrumental in naming. Unable to tolerate the religious situation any longer he eventually emigrated himself in 1633.

Important buildings

St Botolphs – the stump was the largest church in England. The church is used for Baptisms Weddings Funerals Consents and choirs. The church also has 365 steps.

Transport

In the past the most common transport was horse and carriage. There were also rag and bone men who collected scrap.

The Boston Dock was used for the transportation of many goods to Europe.
