What we do at Melbourne Water

We manage • catchments, reservoirs, waterways,

treatment plants and thousands of kilometres of pipes.

We treat • sewage and drinking water to ensure

community and environmental health.

We supply • the right water for the right purpose

to a variety of customer.

We help protect • our waterways and bays to benefit

our community and environment, now and into the future.

The Stormwater Interactive Model

The SIM was due for repair

Some considerations: Convenience The repair work had to be done by the original creator, based in the Blue Mountains Cost The costs and logistics in organising vehicles for towing Care Concerns about the difficulty in handling and moving the trailer. Casual staff attend these events on our behalf, did we know their training and abilities?

Considering other options

Water Smart City

Natural catchment

Urbanisation begins

Water Smart City

Adding some ‘smartness’

Water Smart City

What we have now

POSITIVES Flexible as to where it can be set up Lightweight Engaging to a wide range of ages Multiple messages Easy to transport LESS POSITIVE Does need space for cleaning and drying out Questionable durability, (of legs in particular) Bits may go missing Takes longer to set up then the trailer

Bits of wisdom

We lost time each person took over for the project. Try to keep the same person for the length of the project. It was very useful to speak with people who had used the SIM model. Try to get as many people as possible thinking about the design. With a new design, staying on budget was challenging. Try to keep some dollars aside so you don’t have to compromise on the final product. Try out the activity at different stages of the production. We tested shapes of boxes to fit in vehicles, lifting boxes, putting the model together, design of the houses – including guttering, etc at various times before completion.

New home for the SIM!

Thank you
