Getting Started National Eating Healthy Day is a campaign to eat healthy, get active and kick off a healthy lifestyle focus at your company. Many adults spend much of their day at work, so it’s a great place to implement efforts to help people be healthier.

Use the resources we have developed to kick off a new wellness campaign or add to an existing one. When companies make a pledge to improve employee health, it helps everyone. Start here with our step-by-step action plan.

Step 1: Get management supportIf you need approval to celebrate National Eating Healthy Day, use the email template on page 4. It has great information you can share with your leadership about why healthy employees are good for the company.

Step 2: Choose your dateNational Eating Healthy Day is November 5, but you can set a different date if it works better for your company. Once you choose a day, get it on your employees’ calendars right away, and use one of our email templates to help build awareness and get employees excited about eating healthier at work and at home. National Eating Healthy Day can be the kick-off for a whole month of healthy eating activities.

Step 3: Choose your activitiesWe have lots of great ideas from other companies and individuals who have celebrated National Eating Healthy Day with us. Take a look at the Ideas for Participation on the next page.

Step 4: Plan your eventUse the checklist in this guide to make sure you’ve covered all the details — from food to emails to healthy living tips.

Step 5: Spread the wordDate set? Now start promoting! Use the emails, social media messages, daily tips and weekly articles we’ve provided. Hang posters or flyers in break rooms, restrooms and meeting areas to build awareness. You can download

posters/flyers and other resources at Heart.org/NationalEatingHealthyDay.

Ideas for participation If you participate in the American Heart Association Heart Walk in the spring or fall, you can also use these ideas to kick off your Heart Walk campaign, encourage employees to keep fundraising or provide a big “thank you” for their participation.

Have a Rally or Special Event • Recognize a few employees who have recently made a healthy change or a commitment to healthy living.

• Provide a heart-healthy lunch and “lunch and learn” educational session using the National Healthy Eating Day PowerPoint Presentation.

• Ask your leadership to speak about their interest in employee health.

• Have a health fair in partnership with a local hospital that can also do screenings.

• Arrange a pop-up farmers’ market at your office to connect your employees to the local options for purchasing affordable fruits and vegetables in your area.

• Host a cooking demonstration or tasting of heart-healthy recipes. Visit heart.org/healthyliving for recipes and resources.

Use Communications Tools • Send our weekly tips to introduce new information and create engagement with your employees.

• Send reminder emails using our templates.

• Use your voicemail system to send tips and messages from your wellness staff or your leadership.

• Create a discussion on an internal message board or social media platform about other great ideas for healthy eating.

• Place National Eating Healthy Day flyers and posters by vending machines and in employee break rooms.

PROMOTE HEALTHIER CHOICES • Provide each employee a fruit or vegetable snack. An apple, orange, clementine or small sack of mixed fruit makes

a great “desk drop.” Or have a volunteer in a gorilla suit hand out bananas!

• Replace candy bowls with fruit bowls.

• Create a “doughnut-free and muffin-free zone” and instead offer nonfat/low-fat yogurt or oatmeal with healthy toppings like fresh or dried fruits and unsalted nuts.

• Remove less healthy foods and beverages from vending machines, or post nutrition information so people can compare before they buy.

• Commit to serving healthier meals in your cafeteria and at catered meetings and events. The AHA Healthy Workplace Food and Beverage Toolkit provides practical guidance and resources to help you do this.

communication Templates Use the text below to promote your company’s participation in National Eating Healthy Day. Customize it to fit your events. You can also use it for company-wide communications.

Email to Management for Event Approval More than two-thirds of American adults are overweight or obese, putting them at risk for heart disease and stroke as well as many other chronic illnesses and conditions. Promoting healthier eating in the workplace, where many adults spend much of their day, is an important way to help people be healthier.

That extra weight costs both American employees and organizations like ours directly and indirectly. Annual healthcare cost for an obese employee is significantly higher than for someone with normal weight. When combined with other risk factors such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes – all consequences of obesity – health-related productivity losses can add up.

I would like your approval to kick off a healthier way of living for our employees by celebrating the American Heart Association’s National Eating Healthy Day on November 5. We’ll get free resources to help our employees get on a healthier path.

This is a great cause and opportunity to encourage healthier employees. Why? Because:

• We want our employees to be empowered and see how their jobs tie in with quality of life. • It will increase morale and team-building at our company. • It will save on health insurance costs. • It will increase productivity by promoting a healthier workforce. • We want to help the AHA build a culture of health and a future free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke.
