What You’ll Need

1. Your packet from yesterday

2. Your completed graph (on the graph paper on the last page of the packet)

3. A computer

4. Your brain

Our Goal:

Use Excel to create a graph representing the number of US casualties during the Vietnam War

• Open Excel. The icon should look something like this:

• And when you open it, it looks like this:

Step 1

• Add the data from the chart we used to Excel– Start with the Years– Don’t forget to write

“year” at the top

• Now add the number of casualties each year– Don’t forget to label

the data with

“number of US

casualties”

• Does your screen look like this?

• Yes? - Great, go on to step 3

• No? – Ask your neighbor for help or raise your hand to wait for Mr. Cloward to help

• Now select the whole chart by clicking the corner box and then dragging your mouse to select the whole chart

Step 4

• Click “Insert” on the menu bar at the top

Step 5

• Click “Column”* and choose the first graph type

• No? Ask your neighbor for help or raise your hand

• In the Chart Tools > Design menu, click on “Select Data”

Step 7

• A window should pop up that looks like this:

• Click “Edit” under the Horizontal (Category) Axis Labels

Step 8

• Click and drag to select the list of years (but do not select the heading, “year”)

• Then click “OK”

Step 9

• Now, click on “Year” under the “Legend Entries (Series)” list to select it

Step 10

• If you have “Year” selected, click “Remove”

Step 11

• Click “OK”
