Ø Previous  meter  system  designs  were  able  to  operate  withthe  Automated  Meter  Reading  Control  Computer  (AMCC)communicating  directly  with  the  Customer  InformationSystem (CIS).

Ø Increased data volume and complexity, as well as the needfor more complex data manipulation introduced the need foran  additional  component  that  would  address  the  efficientstorage and processing of large quantities of meter data.

Ø In addition, a provincial SMI solution could not (realistically)be  implemented  with  one  AMI  product.    With  therequirement  for  multiple  AMI  products  comes  the  need  foran MDM/R to handleØ Central storage of multiple feeds of AMI meter data.Ø Validation, Editing & EstimationØ Aggregation of Readings for Billing/SettlementØ Exception management

Ø Whether utilities are the owners, operators, or just usersof an MDM/R system, they realized that they needed tobecome educated on all aspects of the AMI initiativeincluding the capabilities and functions of the MDM/Ravailable in the market place.

Ø The Ontario Utilities Smart Meter (OUSM) working groupis a collaborative effort by utilities to perform testing onall components related to the AMI initiative.

AMI InstallationØ For Utilities deploying AMI systems it is important to make

sure an MDM/R is in place or else you are deploying “blind”.Ø The AMI system traditionally will inform you that they are

communicating to the meter but the MDM/R will verify thequality of data coming from the AMI system.

Ø Verification of all data fields being transmitted from AMIØ Readings (kWh, kW)Ø Alarms (Tamper, Outage)Ø Power Quality Data (Voltage)Ø Perform Data Gap AnalysisØ SLA management of AMI system

Ø The MDM/R will store reading information, and make itavailable to downstream applications:Ø Billing Determinant Data:Ø MDM/R is able to aggregate the interval data and produce it

in the format (Block, TOU, Interval) required by CIS andSettlement Systems.

Ø Customer Presentment Tools:Ø The storage of granular data in the MDM/R allows Customer

Presentment tools to access the information forpresentment to the end consumer to help them understandtheir consumption habits.

Ø With an MDM/R storing all available information from theAMI systems, utilities are able to perform historical analysison key performance issues such as;Ø Outages and Restoration:Ø MDM/R is able to produce reports for utilities, allowing

understanding of all outages throughout their serviceterritory, and the time required to perform the restoration.

Ø Load Control:Ø With all Load Control responses being transmitted through

the MDM/R, utilities can log and produce audit trails for allevents and link them to profile data, to better understandthe effects on load.

Ø Continued…Ø Power Quality:Ø With voltage information stored, utilities can identify

potential power quality issuesØ With this consumption information linked to transformers,

feeders and substations, utilities are better able tounderstand the sizing requirements of their assets.

Ø Ability to identify potential theft issues for those utilitiesmeasuring the load on transformers.

Ø Load Research:Ø With all consumption information and weather data,

utilities are able to provide weather normalizedinformation to their Operations departments andgovernment bodies requesting the data.

Ø Once the AMI systems are deployed, an MDM/R allowsutilities to perform analysis on new Rate Structuresbefore they are implemented to understand the effectson their customers.

Ø This is a valuable process as the utilities understandwho while be affected most, and allow the LDC toforecast call center volumes and focus their CDM effortson education of their consumers regarding availableoptions to help change their consumption habits.

Ø Utilities providing packages to their customers on theaffects of rate changes can help alleviate fears of theunknown.

Ø With the central MDM/R being installed it is important forutilities to work closely with the IESO to understand whatinformation will be maintained within the MDM/R and thefunctionalities that will be provided to utilities in the comingmonths and years.

Ø This understanding is important for utilities’ long termstrategies to make sound business decisions regarding thetools required to optimize the information made availablefrom their AMI and other operational systems.
