march 2019 Rod playing guitar at the Devonport hub music program Donna (second from the right) with some of our Launceston crew Larry Larry Gabby Larry Josh Josh Josh Josh Emma Emma Emma Gabby Emma Bill Andrew Andrew Bill Ben has recently started attending the Devonport hub’s music program during his individual support hours. He and Maxine, one of his support workers, took some time to sit down with me to give some insight into his interests and goals. From a good, long conversation, here are his thoughts on the music program. Meg: What is your opinion from your experience of the music program here at the Devonport hub? Ben: It’s very casual. Undirected in regards to goals and objectives. But that is a good thing especially given the circumstances and the intention. It seems to be less about teaching music and more about just collaborating and communicating together and being familiar with other people with common interests. Music is one of those things. I am sure it would be much the same as the other programs. That they would have a very similar atmosphere about them. It’s less Participants, their families, management and staff. As most of you are aware, I have sadly resigned from my position within Multicap, my last day being Friday the 25th January. I have made the hardest decision of my life to relocate to Hobart and begin a new exciting chapter with my partner. Not only do I leave my position within Multicap, but I also leave behind my adult children and family .... YES there has been a lot of tears. Thank goodness it’s only a 2-hour drive. Firstly, I would like to thank management for the opportunity to lead Blaydon Street team through some significant changes. As team leader I have seen the centre blossom and also struggle with changes to the new NDIS and its expectations. The centre is actively progressing and creating an amazing new environment within our Day Placement setting every day. I foresee a vibrant, engaging and empowering program loaded facility for all to enjoy. My aspirations for Multicap are to become a second to none hub for all people with a disability to attend for empowerment and to build capacity in their everyday lives. I have no doubt with the drive and dedication of our current Leisure and Lifestyle manager Melissa Neasey that this will be 100% reachable. With my resignation and decision to relocate as mentioned above, this was one of the hardest decisions I’ve had to make in my whole life. Not only do I leave a job that I am passionate about, I also leave great friends and working relationships. As a team leader I always strive to build healthy, informative, respectful relationships with all staff, clients and their families, keeping communication open, honest and informative. If there is any word of advice that I can give to upcoming aspiring team leaders, that is to build and maintain consistent, respectful and informative communication, this is the backbone of creating healthy working relationships. Working at Multicap Tasmania has had its fair share of very memorable moments. My most memorable is watching one of our participants take a huge leap of courage and participate in a program that she refused for at least 12 months. This participant has shown that anything is possible with the power of positive thinking and being empowered by those who surround her. Aimee has always wanted to be a mermaid, and now her dreams have come true. There is no stopping Aimee now. Finally, I would like to thank everyone that has crossed my path whilst at Multicap, each and every single person has taught me something new. Here is only a handful: Management Strength...clearly, I was a big softy. Staff Resilience.... never harbor issues, bounce back quickly. Participants Hit challenges head on... never hesitate.
