2011 Wildflower Field Trips Wildflower field trips are sponsored by the Klamath Basin Chapter of the Native Plant Society, Fremont-Winema National Forest, and Crater Lake National Park. For all trips it is recommended that you bring sturdy shoes or boots, plenty of water, sun screen and/or a hat, and a lunch. Be prepared for mosquitoes at most sites. Contact the trip leaders for more information. August 6 Miller Lake 9 am-noon, led by Missy Anderson

Meet at Walt Haring Sno-park at 9 am. Walt Haring Sno-park is 0.5 miles north of the Chemult and 0.5 miles west of Hwy 97 along the Miller Lake Rd. (FS Rd. 9772). From there we will continue up to Miller Lake and hike a short distance around the lake and on the Maidu Trail to check out the plant life in the Evening Creek area. Total walking distance will be under 2 miles, with some elevation gain.

August 20 Crater Lake 9 am to 2 pm, led by Jen Beck

Spend a day enjoying some of the plant diversity of Crater Lake National Park. Meet at 9 am on Saturday, August 20 in the Steel Visitor Center parking area (park headquarters). From here, we will hike to the Castle Crest Wildflower Trail, which is a 0.5 mile loop trail through a meadow with abundant wildflowers. The trail may be rocky and slippery in places. The total hike will be under 2 miles in length, with less than 200 feet gain in elevation. After lunch, we will drive up the East Rim Drive to the Cloudcap Overlook to view the rare pumice moonwort (Botrychium pumicola) and, of course, enjoy views of the lake.

Chiloquin Community Calendars Friends of the Chiloquin Library put out the Chiloquin Community Calendar each year. It is one of their major fund raisers. If you haven‟t seen the calendar, it has a picture by the elementary student that is the winner of our art contest in the spring. It has business ads from local businesses, and on each day of each month there are birthdays, anniversaries, memorials and meeting notices listed. On the 2012 calendar, the picture will be artwork by 3rd grader Britney Spencer. If anyone is interested in putting their family birthdays, anniversaries or memorials on the calendar it is only 50¢ per listing. We have a limited capacity for business ads but still have some room. It is a great way to advertise. If you would like to ask about an ad, put something on the calendar or order a calendar (they make great Christmas gifts and only cost $4.50 including shipping) please call the library at 783-3315 and leave your name and number to have a member of the calendar committee contact you. You can also sign up to be contacted at the library. Local Gardening by Joan Rowe Plants that like to Run

I can‟t count the number of times I‟ve planted something only to find out later that it was a runner, and have

then spent years trying to eradicate it from places where it was not wanted. Sometimes it‟s easier just to sell

the house and move on. In my Chiloquin garden I have quite a few runners, but this time I mostly knew what

I was getting into. My garden is still quite young though and I still may regret some of my choices as the years

pass by.

So what are these plants that I‟m willing to suffer to have? Three of them are edible – Alpine Strawberries,

raspberries and Sea Buckthorn. Alpine Strawberry can be somewhat controlled by cutting off the water in areas

where it‟s not wanted. It makes a short, thick groundcover that completely chokes out weeds and has delicious

berries as a bonus, if you can beat the robins and raccoons to them. Raspberries are quite a bit taller and pop

up quite a distance from the original plant, but raspberry jam makes it all worthwhile. Sea Buckthorn is a thorny

thicket, and is not deterred too much by limited water. It‟s getting out of hand already…. The taste of the orange

berries though, reminds me of my childhood favorite – passion fruit – besides easily filling my vitamin C quota.

Shady moist places encourage Bishop‟s Weed, Japanese Anemone, Sweet Woodruff and Ajuga to run. I have

them planted together and let them duke it out for the available space. Once again these make a thick carpet

that smothers out weeds, and they both stop abruptly at the edge of the watered garden. Bishop‟s Weed has

variegated leaves that really brighten up a shady spot, the Anemone has lovely white flowers followed by fluffy

seed heads, and the Sweet Woodruff has exceptionally pretty foliage covered in tiny white flowers. Ajuga has

lovely spikes of blue flowers in spring, and one variety has burgundy colored leaves. Another plant that likes a

moist spot, regardless of sun or shade, is mint. I have my mint contained by the dry ground around it also.

There are runners for the sunny garden too. Some of the Bellflowers will spread rapidly, and I have been

astonished at how quickly Lipstick Strawberry had extended its range. These are both fairly short, and are

easily overpowered by the taller plants growing around them. Bamboos are notorious runners but the only ones

that are really hardy in our area are a few of the clumping bamboos.

If you are worried about the running, you can try to contain these plants by planting them in containers with

solid walls, but then you do have to be careful about drainage, and sometimes they will find a way out anyway.

I shouldn‟t forget the weeds. Clover, vetch and some grasses will drive you crazy if you let them get hold. Best

to get them out as soon as you see the first leaf!

Trees that run are Aspen, Cottonwood and some of the willows and plums. Think carefully about where you

put them.

FREMONT-WINEMA NATIONAL FOREST TO HOST SUMMER INTERPRETIVE HIKING TRIPS Klamath Falls, Ore. – This summer the public will be able to participate in several free natural history interpretive programs. These trips are being hosted by the Fremont-Winema National Forest. All ages are welcome to attend. For all trips it is recommended that you bring sturdy shoes or boots, plenty of water, hat, sunscreen, lip balm, sunglasses, binoculars, bug spray and a snack or lunch. Dressing in layers works best because of the temperature variances that tour participants experience throughout the day. If you are interested in attending one of the hikes, reservations are appreciated. Please call the Klamath Ranger District at 541-885-3400. Area maps are available for purchase from all Fremont-Winema National Forest‟s offices. These tours are weather dependent, so if the weather is bad, i.e. heavy rain and wind or lightning, tours will be cancelled.

Saturday, Aug 6 – Sevenmile Guard Station (9:30 a.m. to noon) Difficulty – Easy Interested in participating in a guided hike that is educational in nature? This 2.5 mile hike is for you. Meet the Forest Service guide at 9:30 a.m. at the Sevenmile Guard Station located at the intersection of Forest Service Roads 3200 and 3300 off of Nicholson Road out of Fort Klamath. The hike will start at the guard station before crossing over Sevenmile Creek to follow a user‟s created path parallel to the creek before returning via Forest Service Road 3200. The route will be wet and marshy in places, but provides good opportunities to observe birds and various riparian plants and to discuss the work Klamath Bird Observatory does in this area.

Saturday, Aug 13 – Ranger Springs (10 a.m. to 2 p.m.) Difficulty – Moderate Don't miss an opportunity to join a Forest Service employee on a six-mile round trip hike that starts at an elevation of 5,600 feet and gradually climbs gentle slopes to the Pacific Crest Trail and Ranger Springs. Hikers will get to view the flora and fauna of the area and experience first-hand a bubbling spring. Your guide will talk about wildflowers, wildlife habitat and wilderness management practices. Meet the Forest Service guide at the Sevenmile Marsh Trailhead at 9 a.m. The trailhead is approximately ten miles west of Fort Klamath. From Fort Klamath, it can be accessed by traveling east on Nicholson Road to Forest Service Road 3334. No fee is required to park at the trailhead.

Elizabeth Brunswick, Artist of the Month at Two Rivers Gallery I began my studies, including clay sculpture, at John C Campbell School in Brasstown, North Carolina. I studied Stone sculpture at Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. After a ten year span of metal smithing and various other employments of jewelry making, I began my career in Gourd art in 1999. I have attended various gourd workshops in Arizona and Texas and am a past member of the American Gourd society, Texas and Arizona gourd societies, and the Kerr Art and Cultural center in Kerrville, Texas. I have shown and sold work at the Southwest Gourd Fine Art show in Kerrville, Texas, Texas Gourd state shows in Austin and Waco, the Local Color Gallery in Fredericksburg, Texas, Running Y Fall art festival and the Street Faire here in Klamath Falls Oregon. Elizabeth and her husband John are both valued volunteers at Two Rivers Gallery.

HOW IT WORKS Families pick up their Artvoucher treasure maps at the Children‟s Museum at 11 a.m. and set out to visit each of the participating locations for their stamp or sticker. Completed Artvouchers treasure maps are put into a raffle for a treasure chest at the end of the day when it is raffled off to a winner.

Malin bus tour scheduled Reservations are being accepted for the annual Malin history bus tour, scheduled for Monday, Aug. 22. This tour leaves the Klamath County Fairgrounds at 9 a.m., and returns mid to late afternoon after spending the day in the Malin area. The tour focuses primarily on the Modoc Indian War of 1872-73, including the site on Lost River where the war broke out. Other points of interest include the ranches where white settlers were killed by Indians on the opening day of the war. Tour cost is $20, which includes bus transportation and lunch at the Malin Country Diner. This tour is cosponsored by the Klamath County Museum and the Malin Historical Society. Basket exhibition A collection of Klamath Indian baskets not seen in public for nearly half a century will be on exhibit at the Klamath County Museum beginning Friday, July 29. The baskets were collected in the early 1900s by Louis Jacobs, a Klamath Falls store owner who traded with Native Americans. In lieu of cash payment, Jacobs received baskets. His collection has been handed down to a granddaughter who now lives in California. She has loaned the baskets for a two-month exhibition at the county museum.

It is likely, that if you are the victim of a crime, that the Sheriff‟s Department will not respond. This is because the Sheriff‟s Department is underfunded and understaffed, and not able to respond to crimes unless lives are in danger. But still, crimes need to be reported! They need to be tracked, and sometimes patterns can be figured out that might help apprehend a criminal. Crimes can be reported immediately online, and it is possible to get a print out of your report to have on hand. How to sign up for Food Items

If you need commodities and think that you might be eligible to receive foods at the Food Pantry, please drop by on the 4th Wednesday of the month between 10 am and 1pm to sign up. We are here to help those in our community who are struggling financially and although our supplies are limited, we are here to serve our community.

How to Donate to the Food Pantry:

Drop-off times at the Food Pantry, opposite Kirchers: Between 2PM and 3PM on the Monday before the 4th Wednesday in the month or on the 4th Wednesday in the month at 9.30 AM.

Non-perishable food items are always needed and can be deposited in donation barrels around town. They are at Kirchers, The Table, Chiloquin Community Church and the Community Center. More barrels will be placed during the Thanksgiving and Christmas seasons.

Toilet paper and other personal items are always appreciated.

Monetary donations can be put in Collection Boxes located at: Family Foods, the Library, Kirchers, Clyde‟s Market, The Table and the Williamson River Christian Fellowship.

Checks: The Food Pantry is a non-profit organization and checks should be made out to “Chiloquin Care Program” and deposited in the collection boxes in town or brought to the Food Pantry. Receipts will be issued. Checks made out to the Klamath/Lake Counties Food Bank need to be ear-marked for the Chiloquin Food Pantry or Chiloquin Care Program in order for us to be benefited by the donations.

Donations of Produce: If you have an over-abundance of produce in your garden, we are happy to distribute them.

How to Volunteer at the Chiloquin Food Pantry

Volunteers are always needed to assist with stacking commodities coming from Klamath Falls on the Monday before the 4th Wednesday in the month at 1.30pm for approximately 1 hour, and for distribution on the 4th Wednesday of the month between 9.30 am and 1 pm.

If you can volunteer to help out at fund raisers, please contact us.

If you wish to submit ideas or just be an on-looker, join us at an open Board meeting at the Chiloquin Food Pantry at 7pm on the 2nd Tuesday of the month. You will be welcomed.

Chiloquin Garden Club The Garden Club will be meeting once a month on the 3rd Tuesday of the month at 3:00 starting April 19th. Our first meeting will be held at the library but as the season progresses we may meet at member's homes or other places of interest. Meeting sites will be posted at the library. Anyone interested in attending is welcome. The Chiloquin area presents unique challenges with varying types of soil and weather conditions. Basic gardening and current information is available, such as how to identify native and draught resistant plants and use them in landscaping, how to prepare the soil, where to order plants and buy seeds that will grow here. Klamath Humane Society – volunteers needed at the Humane Society. We are getting started on our disaster program and need volunteers in the Chiloquin area. We also are looking for people who can write grants.

Start Making A Reader Today (SMART) – a statewide program working with children K-3 during school hours. Each volunteer works one-on-one with a child for ½ hour, helping them read (or reading to the youngest). We always need volunteers, whether scheduled every week or merely as a substitute reader when the regular reader is unable to attend. Chiloquin Branch Library - The library has many ways to get involved and many fun ways to contribute to your local community. Some opportunities:

1. Storytime: If you would like to read two or three stories to a small group or preschoolers, and lead them in a simple craft or activity, the library staff can use your help. Story time is at 12:30 PM on Wednesday afternoons during the school year.

2. Summer Reading Program: There are many opportunities during the summer to help out with this very worthwhile program.

3. Honor collections: these are racks of paperback books, magazines and audiovisual materials that patrons may check out without a library card. By offering these collections, more people in the community can be reached and a greater diversity of materials can be made available without incurring the costs of cataloging and processing items for the general collections. The staff would like to have some help in keeping these racks orderly, attractive and relevant. Check with the librarian for information on how to “adopt a rack”.

4. Help with sorting donations.

5. Go through Books for Sale section and tidy it once a month or so.

Stop in at the library and see what they need or give them a call at 783-3315.

Chiloquin Visions in Progress (CVIP)

CVIP operates the Chiloquin Community Center and the Chiloquin Learns After School program, and is the contact point for the Chiloquin Area Community Resource Committees and their projects. We have a volunteer list in the office where you can sign up to be available for many different “jobs” and projects. Call 783-7780 between 10 AM and 2 PM weekdays for further information.
