The recently held 63rd Foundation Anniversary was hosted by its youngest unit, JBLCF-Bacolod. One of the highlights of this significant occasion was the Research Colloquium and Sharing of Best Practices which featured research presenters and experts representing JBLCF-Bacolod, JBLFMU-Arevalo, JBLFMU-Molo, and the Mother Unit. The event was attended by more than 90 delegates from the three units as well as the Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Dr. Mary Lou L. Arcelo, the Chief

Executive Officer, Dr. Ronald Raymond L. Sebastian, and the unit administrators, Dr. Ralph Pador, Atty. Lorna Gellada, and our very own Capt. Luis G. Evidente. Others who were also present were Dr. Lourdes C. Arañador, JBLFMU Academic Director, and Dr. Eda C. Ticao, JBLFMU Research Director. Ms. Minerva R. Alfonso, the maritime advisor of the Intertanko in the Asia-Pacific Region inspired everyone in the venue with her informative keynote speech.

Risk Management Program during the 4th International Conference and Scientific Meeting of the Environmental Education Network of the Philippines, Inc. held at Central Bicol State University of Agriculture in Pili, Camarines Sur. The conference took place on February 16-18, 2011 and was attended by more than 110 participants coming from different schools around the Philippines and abroad.

As proof of JBLCF-Bacolod’s deep commitment to research, the campus has ventured on a collaborative research project with the Association of Colleges and Universities in Negros Occidental (ACUNO). In a series of meetings initiated by Dr. Araceli C. Doromal, Unit Academic Coordinator of the JBLCF-Bacolod, plans have been made to decide on the finalization of the collaborative paper entitled “Articulating Higher Order Thinking Skills through Reading Comprehension” which is aimed at conducting an assessment of the academic achievement of students specifically in terms of their level of reading comprehension in English and Mathematics. It was noted that the students’ ability to learn and respond to the challenging activities being used with them in the classroom is highly dependent on their competence to hurdle challenges related to academic and curricular training. This competence should encompass the development of knowledge, skills, and the right attitude, which are the tools needed in dealing with professional work and in responding to the challenges in their everyday life as a whole. Students who are found deficient in these skills almost always find it difficult to deal with difficulties in their subjects. The collaborating group during

the meeting wanted to highlight the importance of diagnosing the level of reading comprehension of students specifically in the areas of Mathematics and English. Also present during the said meeting were Capt. Luis G. Evidente, JBLCF-Bacolod Administrator who opened the session with his warm words of welcome for the visitors, Dr. Sylvino V. Tupas, QA Manager, who reemphasized on the importance of the Table of Specifications in designing the instrument, Mrs. Elisa V. Garcia, Library Technical Assistant, who demonstrated on online referencing, and 2/M Eleno S. Sing, Faculty Assistant to the Administrator for the Maritime Program, and Dr. Emeliza T, Estimo, Unit Research Coordinator, who also graced the meeting. Included in this collaborative research project are the following schools: Silay Institute, La Carlota City College, Colegio de Sta. Rita, Carlos A. Hilado Memorial State College-Talisay, Bacolod City College, Colegio de San Agustin-Bacolod, Global Maritime Academy, and La Consolacion School-Isabela. Spearheading this project is Dr. Araceli C. Doromal, Academic Coordinator of JBLCF-Bacolod who is assigned as the team leader.

group of participants during the 33rd Environment Forum of the Center for Environmental Initiatives held on November 25, 2010 at the Governor’s Conference Hall, Provincial Capitol, Bacolod City. Among the participants in the said forum were some local government unit officers, city and municipality planning officers, and representatives of different non-government organizations (NGOs). Again, JBLCF-Bacolod has proven itself true to one of its seven-point agenda on corporate responsibility which articulates the school’s commitment to community extension and unrelenting effort of reaching out to the local community.

faculty in the Business Department, conducted a seminar-workshop to a group of elementary school teachers of Rodolfo A. Medel Sr. Elementary School. The said activity was held at RAMSES school campus and was attended by seventy one (71) teachers from RAMSES under the supervision of their principal, Mrs. Maricor Daprinal and other seventeen (17) teachers from Pahanokoy Elementary School under Mrs. Lanie Boscas (principal). This activity has been one of the programs of JBLCF-Bacolod Community Extension Program under the leadership of Mr. Joemil G. Galve.

the Languages Area. She had obtained Complete Academic Requirements from Philippine Women’s University through Distance Education mode for the degree Doctor of Education in Educational Management and has recently completed her degree on Doctor of Philosophy major in Applied Linguistics from the University of St. La Salle, Bacolod City. Dr. Araceli C. Doromal, Academic Coordinator of JBLCF-Bacolod had emphasized that all topics for student researches must anchor on the system’s seven-point agenda. She also pointed out the need to design a clear structure or system for the compliance of research outputs as academic requirement and to raise the quality of student research papers. She stressed that instructors handling research subjects should scrutinize student research outputs to ensure a higher level of quality before they should be endorsed to the Research Committee for completion. Final grades will only be issued upon approval and after hard copies as well as electronic copies of the final outputs have been submitted at the Research Office. Mrs. Ruby D. Causing, Chairperson for the Research Committee, was appointed as team leader of the instructors handling Research subjects.

and experience they had turned over to her after their term of office. On top of her goals is to maximize research production among the faculty and administrative staff over and above the minimum requirement which is one research output every three years. She is looking forward at developing a higher degree of internalization on the value of research among the JBLCF-Bacolod employees and students which could benchmark the system’s engraved commitment to research and development. She believes that for JBLCF-Bacolod to succeed as a research community everyone should actively take part for the attainment of one goal by rendering unselfish and unconditional service and commitment to the work—however small or big the contribution is. We must all be driven by an inner motivation to accomplish the task, not because somebody pushes or forces us to do it, but because we voluntarily commit ourselves to do the job.

The event was a collaborative effort of all the Unit Research Coordinators headed by Dr. Rolando Alimen (JBLFMU-Molo), Dr. Mechor Magramo (JBLFMU-Arevalo), and Dr. Emeliza T. Estimo (JBLCF-Bacolod) under the direction and supervision of Dr. Ticao. Overseeing the preparations for the said event was Dr. Araceli C. Doromal who was the overall chairperson of the research colloquium. We owe the success of this event to all the members of the JBLCF-Bacolod Faculty Research Committee who made everything ready and accessible.

“In Dr. Henry L. Galuba’s talk about Multidisciplinary Approach and the Quest for Meaningful Education Studies, I have learned that learning does not only involve competence but also consciousness. As a person, you should know your strengths and weaknesses so that you would know what you need to learn and what to improve. To have a globally competent student, we should develop their intellectual characteristics, knowledge, attitudes, and skills. Attitude is believed to be the most important consideration today. Knowledge and skills can be taught in due time, but attitude is the most difficult to change. The greatest challenge for us teachers is how to turn garbage into gold. A teacher should have a strong belief that all students can learn. He or she should have a strong respect on diversity, engage in professional growth, meet high ethical standards of practice, reflect upon practice, and do research to improve it. A good teacher must also collaborate with colleagues, families, and the community to provide the best learning environment for the learners.”
