Hunters Education Upon successful completion of this class, students will be licensed to legally carry a concealed handgun in Texas and 31 reciprocal states. Fee includes classroom training, range, targets, application forms, notary service and photos. Topics covered: Legal Aspects of Concealed Carry, Safe Handling and Storage, Non-Violent Dispute Resolution and Use of Force Laws. In addition, we will discuss Basic Firearms Safety and Operation, Shooting Grip and Stance, Firearm Selection, Concealed Carry Methods, Risk Avoidance and Civil Liability All students must successfully complete a written test and live fire qualification. Students should be somewhat familiar with their pistol and know how to operate it safely. Accommodations can be made for students needing additional instruction, assistance, or encouragement. Every effort will be made to provide a safe, comfortable, and enjoyable shooting experience for all. Students must supply firearm and ammunition. State Fees not included. One Session Required to Obtain Certification

Karate Alvin Parks and Recreation is a proud supporter

of Champion Youth Outreach. Karate classes

teach self-defense and safety awareness

presented by certified black belt instructors in an

exciting format especially for youth! Open to

boys and girls ages 4-15, this program follows a

unique curriculum, beginning with release

techniques, abduction prevention, respect and

discipline.

Boot Camp

Drop and give me 20...whether you want to drop 20

lbs or feel 20 years younger this boot camp can get

you there. Join Jimmy from Anytime Fitness and get

moving! This class is for all levels of physical

ability. Jimmy will use various exercise techniques

and equipment such as jump ropes, medicine balls,

squats, and lunges to achieve a whole body workout.

Skateboarding Explained

Alvin finally has our very own world-class skateboard

park! Skateboarders of all abilities, ages 6 and up, are

invited to “Skateboarding Explained” camp, where you

can hang out with the pros and learn new tricks, while

having a lot of fun this summer. SE camp is headed

by Mentality Skateboards pro Dan MacFarlane, who’s

successfully instructed thousands including X-games

athletes, and is also the creator of “Skateboarding

Explained”, the number one video of its kind.

Swimming offers the best exercise you can get for cardiovascular conditioning and muscle toning! Adult open swim offers a time when adults over 18 can enjoy the benefits of swimming.

Location: Harby Jr. High

Time: 7:30 a.m.-9:30 a.m.

Dates: Monday-Friday (Year-round)

Fee: $15 per person, per month

This program is open to all ages! Swimmers under the age of 15 must be accompanied by an adult. Pool is available for both lap swim and water walking during this time. Individual and Family passes are available year round.

As a parent enrolling your children in swim lessons is one of the most important decisions you can make for you and your child. Our staff includes American Red Cross Water Safety Instructors with an extensive aquatic background who are trained to effectively teach you and your child how to swim and be safe in a water environment. Red Cross Certified

First Day Evaluations

Our Learn-to-Swim Instructors are American Red Cross Certified. Water Safety Instructors’ are persons 16 years or older with swimming experience who have gone through 36+ hours of instruction to effectively teach you or your child to swim and be safe in a water environment.

On the first day of each session, students will be informally evaluated to determine whether or not they are in the appropriate class.

This class helps familiarize young children to the water and prepare them swim in the Preschool Class and LTS Levels I-VI. It is not designed to teach them to be good swimmers or to survive in the water on their own.

These lessons are for first time swimmers and focus on the orientation of participants to the aquatic environment. It will help develop positive attitudes, good swimming habits and safe practices in and around water.

Level I

These lessons are designed to orient preschool aged children to the aquatic environment and help them acquire rudimentary levels of basic aquatic skills.

Parent & Child: 9-36 months

Preschool: 4-5 years

Level II

This class is designed for swimmers who have successfully completed Level I and are ready to build on the basic water skills including learning how to float without support.

CPR & First Aid

Training meets OSHA Guidelines for First Aid

Programs and combines lecture, interactive video

demonstrations featuring emergency scenarios

that are likely to occur in a variety of

environments and hands-on training to teach

participants lifesaving skills.

CPR Adult: Participants learn how to

perform CPR and care for breathing and

cardiac emergencies in adults

CPR Child and Infant: Participants learn

how to prevent, recognize and respond to

cardiac and breathing emergencies in infants

and children under 12

AED: Participants learn how to use automatic

external defibrillators

First Aid: Participants learn to recognize and

care for a variety of first aid emergencies, such as

burns, cuts and scrapes, sudden illnesses, head,

neck and back injuries, and heat and cold

emergencies.

Spanish for Kids Great opportunity for your child to learn

Spanish and have fun! We will be reviewing

colors, shapes, weather, days of the week and

counting in Spanish every week. Plus, we will

be learning more vocabulary. We will learn how

to say our manners, greetings, body parts, fami-

ly members, and Christmas vocabulary in Span-

ish. So, how will your kids have fun learning

Spanish? They will sing songs, play games, art

activities and more! This will engage your child

in learning Spanish! So, Let your child join in

the fun of learning a second language!

Little Illustrator Is your child interested in writing? Would

you love to be the proud parent of an author

of a book? Then this class is for you! This

class will allow your little illustrator to

create their own book. Students will spend 8

weeks writing and illustrating . Their work

will then be hard bound. The books will be

given to each student after completion of

the class.

Creative Kids

Young artists will have fun building

imagination, hand-eye coordination, self

expression and fine motor skills while

experimenting with a variety of art

supplies. Under the guidance of a

certified art teacher, your child will have

hands-on experience with paint, clay,

paper, crayons, markers and glue to

create their own works of art! This class

will focus on art as well as craft

projects.

Sew Simple

Have you always wanted to learn to sew? In

this class you will learn basic sewing

techniques such as measuring, pattern layout

and stitching while you create a fashion

apron. Have your own project you would like

to start? Bring it too! For this class you will

need to bring your own sewing machine and

supply list provided at registration. Apron

pattern included in the cost of the class. You

will love this class...its sew much fun!

FINE ARTS A LA CARTE CURRICULUM FOR ALVIN AFTER-SCHOOL

Wednesdays, 3:45– 5:15pm, Pre-K-5th Grades

This is a comprehensive arts course taught by a practicing fine artist. Students will explore a variety of mediums in Drawing,

Painting and Sculpture with a focus on understanding technique, color theory and execution of composition. In each class stu-

dents will be shown a presentation on a major artist or art historical period that emphasizes the lesson being taught. All supplies

are included in lesson fees, except a smock/Apron which is required for all classes. Students will leave their work with Mrs.

Smith until the last class which will culminate in an end of year show of the students work.

The Alvin Senior Center is a great facility for birthdays, weddings, graduation parties, baby showers, or any type of event. All of the many different size meeting rooms are available for your next event! Please call (281) 388-4298 for rental rates and to check date availability.

All pavilions are available for rentals on a first come, first serve basis and have a two hour minimum.

Day Usage: $10 per hour (resident) $20 per hour (non-resident)

The Alvin Senior Center is open to the public year round. This 10,000 square foot facility features: Two large meeting rooms, a media room, a computer room with 4 internet ready computers, a TV lounge, and craft room .

Cancellation or Rescheduling Most classes have a minimum number of students in order to be held. The Parks and Recreation Department reserves the right to cancel, combine, change

time, date, change instructors or make any revisions, which may be deemed necessary.

Refund/Transfer Policy Recreation Programming

When the Department cancels a class, you may choose to transfer to another class that is not full or receive a full refund.

Participants requesting to withdraw or transfer classes must do so seven business days prior to the start of the original class, providing space is

available in the requested class. There will be no refunds to participants who withdraw within seven business days.

Participants who develop a medical condition that impairs their ability to benefit from a class may request, in writing and provide a doctor’s note

may request a refund or credit.

Pool Rentals and Passes Pool rental fees are required to be paid in full at the time the reservation is made.

Patrons requesting to cancel or transfer their pre-paid pool reservation date must do so fourteen calendar days prior to the date of their reservation, a

$25 processing fee will apply to refunds. There will be no refunds to pool renters who cancel within fourteen calendar days. Full or partial refunds,

will be considered for pool rentals canceled by the Recreation Department due to bad weather, mechanical or chemical problems. Patrons are

encouraged to re-schedule to another open date in lieu of a refund. Pool Passes are non-refundable.

Types of Refund methods

Payments made by cash, check or money order shall be refunded in the form of a check from the City of Alvin payable to the original

name making the registration/reservation.

Credit card transactions shall be refunded back to the card used less any credit/debit card processing fees.
