As we enter 2020, an exciting new chapter begins in the life of Norwich Theatre. As you will see as you leaf through this brochure, we have a new brand bringing our three stages across Theatre Royal, Playhouse and Stage Two together while also boasting a new contemporary look which reflects both our heritage and our exciting future.

It is also only right that we match this with a high quality and wide-ranging new programme which includes the return of Matthew Kelly starring opposite Julian Clary in The Dresser. Another drama highlight is Private Lives, Noel Coward’s scintillatingly witty comedy which stars another favourite of Norwich audiences, Nigel Havers and marks the debut tour of Nigel’s own company.

Our dance programme features an exciting production from Olivier Award-winning choreographer Drew McOnie who promises humour, heartbreak and more than a little magic in Northern Ballet’s highly anticipated Merlin, a visit from Brazil’s Sao Paolo Dance Company as part of their first ever UK tour and an exciting world premiere from our long-standing artistic partners, Rambert.

Our 2020 classical music programme will feature the cream of international orchestral talent, and no new season is complete without great musicals with the return of Grease and Mamma Mia, musical-drama Malory Towers and our Youth Company bringing a fresh take on the iconic West Side Story.

Finally, we are working hard on a number of initiatives off-stage too. I am honoured to say we are now a Theatre of Sanctuary which is a mark of our organisation-wide commitment to work with refugees and asylum-seekers in our community. We are also pleased to share our next Creative Matters season which focusses on the universal issues of loss and grief and is set to be one of our most thought-provoking to date.

A busy time for us all here on-stage and off, but stay with us on the challenging and exciting journey ahead.

Malory Towers 'It makes you want to cheer' The Times

Nostalgic, naughty and perfect for now, Malory Towers is a musical of high jinks, high drama and high spirits. Darrell Rivers is starting school with an eager mind and fierce heart. Unfortunately, she also has a quick temper! Can she learn to tolerate the infuriating Gwendoline Lacey, or value the kind-hearted Sally Hope? Can she save the school play and rescue terrified Mary Lou from the grip of a raging storm? If she can do these things anywhere, she will do them at Malory Towers! Adapted and directed by Emma Rice (Wise Children, Kneehigh’s Brief Encounter), this is a show for anyone who still dreams of midnight feasts, pillow fights and headmistresses like Miss Grayling.

‘A glorious play’ Daily Telegraph

Much-loved entertainer Julian Clary and Matthew Kelly (Of Mice and Men, Waiting for Godot) star in Ronald Harwood’s acclaimed drama . Inspired by his memories of working as Donald Wolfit’s dresser as a young man, this is an evocative, affectionate and hilarious portrait of backstage life.It is 1942 and in a war-torn provincial theatre an aging actor manager, known to his loyal acting company as ‘Sir’, is struggling to cling on to his sanity and complete his 227th performance of King Lear. It is down to Norman, Sir’s devoted dresser, to ensure that in spite of everything, the show goes on.

Coward’s dazzling comic masterpiece is both a scintillatingly witty and scathingly vitriolic study of the rich and reckless in love. One of the country’s most beloved and Olivier award winning actresses, Patricia Hodge OBE will play Amanda. Ever suave, dapper and thoroughly charming, Nigel Havers plays Elyot, the role taken by Noël Coward himself in the original production in 1930.Elyot and Amanda, who were once married to each other, find themselves on honeymoon with their new partners, in the same hotel in the South of France and admiring the vista from adjoining balconies. A musical drama for soloists, unison voices, SATB chorus, and instrumental ensemble

2

This engaging musical drama follows the quest of Pip the Sparrow to be accepted into the Dawn Chorus. Along the way Pip meets characters like the Doc Rock Peacocks, who promise to transform him into a star—at high personal cost—and the troubled residents of ‘The Bewilderness’. With the help of two friendly owls, Pip meets the fabled singing sensation Shamira the Golden Nightingale and discovers her secret, leading him to reflect on his own circumstances and to at last have confidence in his own, authentic voice.

As well as a rich variety of solo roles, which also feature spoken narration, the work provides great dramatic potential for the unison and mixed choruses, who play an integral role in the storytelling. The memorable, eminently singable melodies are complimented by a characterful orchestration, for ten-part instrumental ensemble, with Chilcott drawing on a broad range of musical styles. Exploring themes of identity, inclusivity, and self-belief, this heart-warming work is a testament to the unifying, healing power of music.

Also available:Birdland Rehearsal Pack (ISBN 978-0-19-XXXXXX-X)

- Photocopiable unison part- Photocopiable lyric sheets- Access to a companion website, featuring downloadable audio rehearsal tracks

has been involved with choral music all his life, first as a Chorister and then a Choral Scholar at King’s College, Cambridge. Later, he sang and composed music for twelve years with the King’s Singers. His experiences with that group, his passionate commitment to young and amateur choirs, and his profound belief that music can unite people, have inspired

him both to compose full-time and, through proactive workshopping, to promote choral music worldwide.
