Back for a second year, the East Riding Festival of Words is jam packed with fascinating bestselling authors and interesting discussions.

The Festival of Words, organised by East Riding Libraries, returns for a second year from 15-20 October 2019.

The festival features a sparkling lineup of speakers, starting with a talk at Willerby Library on Tuesday, 15 October, from Stephen May. His style is as much stand-up comedy as author talk!

Bestselling author Duncan Barrett discusses the Nazi occupation of the Channel Islands during WW2 in his new book ‘Hitler’s British Isles’ on Wednesday, 16 October at South Cave Library.

On Thursday, 17 October, the festival continues in North Bridlington Library with Danuta Kot, whose book ‘Life Ruins’ was described by Amazon as “Broadchurch meets The Missing”.

The Festival moves to Beverley Art Gallery on Friday, 18 October as we welcome actor and Guardian columnist Rhik Samadder to discuss his wonderful book, ‘I Never Said I Loved You’, followed by the enchanting Christy Lefteri, who will be discussing her bestselling book, The Beekeeper of Aleppo.

Saturday, 19 October presents a dazzling array of crime authors, brought to us by the Murder Squad including Cath Staincliffe (who wrote the ITV series ‘Blue Murder’) and an expert panel of bestselling authors; Margaret Murphy, Helen Pepper and the wonderful Ann Cleeves (famed for being the author behind ITV’s ‘Vera’ and BBC’s ‘Shetland’ series). The day culminates in a 1920s themed murder mystery dinner at Beverley Memorial Hall, written by crime author Kate Ellis – fancy dress optional!

Sunday, 20 October focuses on the theme of ‘Belonging’ and starts with ‘The Big Read’ and the outstanding Raynor Winn, whose book ‘The Salt Path’ was described by The Times as the “most inspirational book of the year”.

Join Jessica Fellowes; who wrote the Downton Abbey companion books, followed by gloriously indulgent tea and cakes in the stunning gallery setting between 3 - 4pm, followed by our finale, the wonderful bestselling romance author, Erica James.

RHIK SAMADDER‘I NEVER SAID I LOVED YOU’3.30 – 4.30pm | Beverley Art Gallery | £6

Rhik Samadder is an actor and Guardian columnist whose first book ‘I Never Said I Loved You’ takes the reader on a voyage through his own mental health and recovery from depression, which he has had for most of his life.

‘I Never Said I Loved You’ has been described as “searingly honest, heartbreakingly poignant and unexpectedly hilarious...”

Rhik’s book describes how he ended up where he was, what he does to counter the darkness that pulled him in, and the way in which his actions impacted on those around him.

CHRISTY LEFTERI‘THE BEEKEEPER OF ALEPPO’7 – 8pm | Beverley Art Gallery | £6

Beautifully written, ‘The Beekeeper of Aleppo’ is a testament to the power of the human spirit to overcome insurmountable odds. Nuri and his wife Afra have to leave their beautiful city of Aleppo as it is torn apart by war. They take a perilous route through Turkey and Greece in search of an uncertain future in Britain.

Hear how Christy Lefteri found inspiration for her book when working as a volunteer at a refugee centre in Athens and witnessed the desperation of people fleeing from their own war torn countries.

Tuesday, 15 October

STEPHEN MAY WE DON’T DIE OF LOVE7 – 8pm | Willerby Library | £5

Stephen May’s warm-hearted and funny new novel deals with some of the defining questions of our time: How do you make a long marriage work? What does the phrase ‘Northern Powerhouse’ actually mean? And is breakfast really the most important meal of the day? In a performance that is as much stand-up comedy as it is author talk, Stephen attempts to wrestle with the absurdities of the way we live now.

Stephen has written five novels including the Costa Novel Award shortlisted ‘Life! Death! Prizes!’ He has also been shortlisted for The Guardian’s Not The Booker Prize, and is a past winner of the Wales Book of the Year Reader’s Choice Award.

Wednesday, 16 October

DUNCAN BARRETT HITLER’S BRITISH ISLES7 – 8pm | South Cave Library | £5

Duncan Barrett is the internationally bestselling author of ‘The Sugar Girls’, ‘GI Brides’ and ‘The Girls Who Went to War’. For his new book, he interviewed more than a hundred men and women who lived through the German occupation of the Channel Islands during WW2.

In this talk he shares some of their remarkable tales – the true stories behind the fiction of the Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society. By turns tragic, heroic and hilarious, they shine a light on what life was like for the only British population to live under the Third Reich, and offer a glimpse into the alternate history we might have lived through if Hitler’s invasion of mainland Britain had gone ahead as planned.

Thursday, 17 October

DANUTA KOT LIFE RUINS7 – 8pm | North Bridlington Library | £5

‘Life Ruins’ combines haunting landscapes with a gripping plot. Three very different people are connected by a thread of violence and hope. Can the three of them help each other rebuild their lives from the ruins of the past?

Described by Amazon as “Broadchurch meets The Missing – hard-hitting, pacey and with modern social issues at its heart”.

Danuta will take us through the influences that have shaped ‘Life Ruins’ such as poverty, alienation and social breakdown to produce a very modern crime novel.
