AS CANBERRA COMES ALIVE IN SPRING, SO TOO DOES THE LIBRARY’S PACKED EVENTS AND EXHIBITIONS PROGRAM.

Cook and the Pacific is our latest exhibition and offers a stunning glimpse at life in the Pacific region 250 years ago. With rare pieces from the major British collections, and our own, on display, this is a must-see event.

The exhibition is complemented by a number of Pacific-themed activities for young and old, including the immersive Beauty Rich and Rare sound and light experience that celebrates the natural beauty of Australia’s flora and fauna and the In Cook’s Wake: Tapa Treasures from the Pacific display in the Treasures Gallery.

COOK AND THE PACIFIC

Visitors to Cook and the Pacific will follow in Cook’s wake over the course of three remarkable voyages, and explore the Pacific through the eyes of the British voyagers and the First Nations peoples they met. Focusing on place, the exhibition presents a series of meetings anchored on Pacific coastlines including Tahiti, New Zealand, the east coast of Australia, Hawaii and more. With content drawn from the Library’s own collection and from other Australian and international cultural institutions, visitors will be enthralled by the varied items including manuscripts, rare books, large oil paintings, delicate watercolours by voyage artists, medallions, cartoons and poetry.

LECTURES

Wednesday 5 SeptemberRe-imagining Australian Mammals: Past and Present Dr Carolyn Young used her Creative Arts Fellowship to research small endangered Australian mammals, focusing on the original plates for John Gould’s Mammals of Australia (London, 1863). Carolyn’s investigation inspired a new body of artwork (photography and mixed media), re-imagining the nineteenth-century experience of grassland species. It explores the relevance of native mammals to Australian culture—past and present. Carolyn has a PhD in photography (ANU) and honours degree in natural resources (UNE). She won the Pat Corrigan Acquisitive Award, Centre for Contemporary Photography (2016).

Wednesday 21 NovemberWageless Life in the Great DepressionIt is frequently contended that present-day working conditions and wagelessness are analogous to those experienced during the severe economic downturn of the 1930s. Using methods of historical sociology, Professor Lisa Adkins explores oral and manuscript testimonies of those who lived through the period to test the claim that the conditions of the present, and especially those associated with work, are comparable to those of the Great Depression.  Professor Lisa Adkins is Head of the School of Social and Political Sciences at The University of Sydney and an Academy of Finland Distinguished Professor (2015–19).

Digby & Claudeby Emma Allen, illustrated by Hannah Sommerville

Digby’s street is soon going to look different— old houses are going to be demolished and new apartments will be built. But Digby isn’t sure he wants Main Street to change. With the help of his new friend, Claude, Digby creates a hideout where the pair can think and play. As their grand plans grow and the

street around them starts to transform, the boys begin to realise that the best places of all are places where you belong.

Power of the Pedal: The Story of Australian Cyclingby Rupert Guinness

In Power of the Pedal, read about cycling in Australia from the penny farthing to 21st-century commuters and Olympic stars.

Bicycles changed our lives! They meant a new and faster way to get around and gave rise to ways of exploring, socialising and competing. In the nineteenth century, cycling

encouraged ‘overlanders’, adventurers who explored new routes through rugged terrain; cycling clubs that gave women a new kind of freedom to mix socially with men; and novel kinds of racing.

In this book, cycling journalist Rupert Guinness reveals 200 years of the bike in Australian everyday life and the world of competition.
