Our History In 1983, a group of visionary civic leaders formed Heritage Windsor, an organization dedicated to reclaiming Windsor’s riverfront.

As the riverfront project moved forward, our organization broadened its scope to assist with other civic projects such as the Ojibway Prairie Complex and the Ganatchio Trail extension. To reflect the new focus of the organization, the name Heritage Windsor changed to the Greater Windsor Community Foundation.

Since 2008, our name has been the WindsorEssex Community Foundation. The new title reflects our commitment to serve both City and County. We are proud to say that we have helped build Windsor-Essex by providing $5.8 million in grants since 1983. We are also pleased to be one of 191 community foundations working together through the national association, Community Foundations of Canada.

Our Approach We are unique in building community vitality:• We focus on donors as community builders by matching their interests and strengths with community needs to

provide innovative solutions. • We take the broadest view of what community is, allowing us to grant across the broad spectrum of organizations in

Windsor and Essex County.• We always look to the future to help build a resilient, sustainable society.

WE are a great place to leave a legacy!

Let us start by thanking you for your continued support of Windsor-Essex through your Community Foundation. This report includes a review of many of the highlights of the 2014/2015 year, including the Foundation’s move to a new location, the growth of the Foundation team, new funds and expanded community leadership.

In June 2015 we moved to a new location at 511- 3200 Deziel Drive. We invite you to stop in and see the new location, which includes an expanded meeting space in a central location. This year we also expanded the team with a new Executive Director, Lisa Kolody, and an Administration and Grants Coordinator, Kyrsten Solcz. Building on a strong investment year, we were able to provide grants of $424,059 this year! We are so proud of the strong impact we continue to make through our Community Impact Grants, KidStart Mini Grants, and FastTrack Grants. We are also thankful for all our fund holders who have continued to invest heavily in our community, including investments in Health and Human Services; Children and Youth; Education and Literacy; Arts, Culture and Heritage; Community Development; Environment and Recreation and Sport. We know that these issue areas are important investment opportunities for the Foundation to support our community. As we develop and grow our Vital Signs® program, we ask you to participate by taking our survey and sharing your voice on what is important to you. The Foundation is proud to be part of this national effort to collect data specific to our community and help make an impact in the areas that mean so much to all of us.

This year we launched a new program, Inspiration 100, a call to action for 100 community leaders to invest for the long term. We give pecial thanks to Marty Solcz, the Foundation’s past Chair, for providing the innovation and action to launch this program that will benefit our community in perpetuity. This year also saw the launch of our inaugural golf tournament, the Community Cup. We appreciate the outstanding support we received from our board members and the community to make this event a huge success.

We are proud to continue to support Random Acts of Kindness Day and look forward to another great year next year. We will continue to grow with the launch of our Young Philanthropists in 2015 and with new opportunities to invest and contribute to make this community a great place in which to live, work, play and grow!

Sincerely,

Lisa KolodyExecutive Director

WindsorEssex Community FoundationFirst Biennial Community Cup Pro-Am Golf TournamentThe WindsorEssex Community Foundation (WECF) hosted its First Biennial Community Cup Pro-Am Golf Tournament to a sold out crowd! The tournament raised much needed funds to help support many projects and local not-for-profit organizations that improve the

well-being of people within our community. In addition to the modified Ryder Cup format, each foursome was joined by a professional golfer competing for a separate prize purse. To all those who participated in sponsored or donated to this event, the organizing committee, and all the volunteers, the WECF Community Cup Golf Committee offers a very special thank you and our sincere gratitude.

Inspiration 100™It’s an exclusive club with a twist — not about networking but giving.

This year, Marty Solcz and Fred Quenneville launched Inspiration 100 with the goal of assembling one hundred local philanthropists who commit to giving $25,000 over 10 years for a total of $2.5 million. As a project of the WindsorEssex Community Foundation, Inspiration 100 will help the community in many ways - in perpetuity. The $2.5 million will be held in an independent fund under the management of the WECF, of which the proceeds

will be distributed by the Inspiration 100 members to a wide range of local charities.

“The benefit of this will be huge,” says Solcz, past chair of the WindsorEssex Community Foundation, who came up with the idea. “There are infinite possibilities.” The Inspiration 100 concept is simple: members agree to donate $2,500 a year for 10 years, or $20,000 up front. The group then meets every year to decide how to distribute the money. The capital will remain in the endowment but the interest on investments is available to boost local charities. Thus far, 39 out of 100 members are registered with a total commitment to date of $935,000 since our launch in April 2015. Participation in Inspiration 100 is still open to new members.

Vital Signs® 2014In 2014, Vital Signs® incorporated a survey asking members of the community for their input to add to our local and national data collection. WindsorEssex Community Foundation was one of more than 27 community foundations that published similar reports. The WECF is proud to reach out to our community annually and start a conversation of what makes our community a great place in which to live, work and play.

Random Act of Kindness Day™ 2014Kindness is…..For the fifth year in a row, the Community Foundation sponsored the very successful Random Act of Kindness Day™. Joining with community foundations across Canada, we encouraged everyone to celebrate the many acts of kindness that happen every day of the year. Windsor and Essex County rose to the occasion, marking the day with a wide variety of individual acts of kindness, paying it forward once again.

Agency Funds allow area charities a safe and efficient way to establish their own endowment fund while benefiting from our investment and administrative expertise.

Community Funds are composed of many gifts, large and small, each symbolizing a lasting investment in our region. Grants from these funds are awarded through our Community Impact Grants program, allowing us

to respond flexibly to our communities’ immediate needs and priorities. Community Impact Grants fall into seven categories: Health & Human Services; Arts, Culture & Heritage; Recreation; Environment; Education & Literacy; Children & Youth and Community Development.

Donor Advised Funds allow fund holders to work closely with the Foundation’s grantmaking review committee to select projects and organizations that mean the most to them. They operate much like private foundations, but without the cost and administrative work for the donor.

Donor Designated Funds allow donors to make lasting gifts to their favourite charities. With the establishment of a fund, donors select one or more charitable organizations, local or national, to benefit from their fund.

Field of Interest Funds allow donors to identify a specific area of interest that they wish to support. Local grant recipients are determined by the Foundation’s grantmaking review committee, ensuring that the fund remains responsive to the communities’ needs while supporting the donor’s interests.

Managed Funds are investment accounts established with the Community Foundation in order to benefit from our professional investment management.

Scholarship Funds allow donors to make lasting gifts recognizing student potential. The scholarship funds provided are directed to the college or university of the student’s choice.
