Guy Fawkes
Guy Fawkes was part of the gunpowder plot. Explosives were
planted under the House of Lords in London in order to
assassinate King James I during the State Opening of Parliament
on 5 November 1605. The plot failed and Guy Fawkes was
arrested while guarding the 36 barrels of explosives. In
celebration that the King had survived the attempt people lit
bonfires around London and the 5 November became an annual
celebration known as Guy Fawkes Night, Bonfire Night and
Fireworks Night.
Throughout the years effigies of Guy Fawkes were placed on top
of the bonfire and children began begging for money with the
now lesser seen ’Penny for the Guy’. You still see the odd guy
here and then but not as many as I remember as a child.

My French and Spanish
Sticker Dictionaries
Reviewed by Claire Agasse
I recently received 2 language sticker
book dictionaries for review: My French
Sticker Dictionary and My Spanish Sticker
Dictionary. Both are very colourful with
over 50 words in each language to find
and learn.
My children love stickers and have done
many other sticker books in the past.
What I love about the dictionaries is that
they are just that little bit challenging; the
children are given the name of the object
in English and the stickers themselves are
only in the language they apply to. They
also contain the pronunciation under-
neath. They are mixed up on the sticker
sheets so they have to really look through
them to find what they need.
The stickers themselves are easy enough
to take out and stick down well. Each
picture has an outline for the sticker to
map to.
Each theme is relevant to children and
they are every day words that young
people will come across.
Children in the age-group 3-5 could do
these activities from matching pictures.
However, I think it would be much more
beneficial for children to able to read and
I would therefore target the 6+ age-group.
The fact that the pictures are the same in
both dictionaries is good. This way the
children can compare the words in each
language.
The My Sticker Dictionaries are an
excellent, fun learning tool for young
children and a great idea to help your
children learn a second language. At £5.99
each these are great value for money.
Rating: 5/5

My French Sticker Dictionary and My Spanish Sticker Dictionary offer the perfect mix of colourful fun and
language learning to teach children simple foreign language words in everyday settings.
Every page features a familiar scene, from the classroom to the supermarket, with each word clearly illustrated for
easy learning. A simple pronunciation guide for each word also eliminates any struggle for parents approaching a
language with their children for the first time.
The detailed scenes on every page offer lots to talk about as children match the French or
Spanish stickers to the English word, guaranteeing hours of entertainment.
The benefits of learning foreign languages from an early age have been recognised in Government plans to
introduce language learning into Primary Schools. Not only is language learning much easier for younger children,
it also provides wide reaching advantages such as early reading skills, cognitive development and improved
problem-solving skills.

The benefits of teaching toddlers a second language
by Audrey Antoine-Hart of Bilingüebabies
I write this from the view point of a person primarily raised as Monolingual (with one
language) and therefore I hope to inspire those that speak several languages or speak only
one and encourage you that raising your children bilingual is accessible. Drs Kendall King and
Alison Mackey of ‘The Bilingual edge’ confirm that it is possible for a ‘monolingual’ to raise a
bilingual child. Jill Kushner Bishop (a Linguistic Anthropologist) states the benefits of doing so
as ‘linguistic, cognitive and social’. Please find the reasons to teach and their benefits..
Reasons:
1. Cognitive benefits- learning a second language alters the brain structure (Grey matter)
- Studies have proven that learning an additional language as a toddler can and will delay the
early onset of Dementia
- Gray matter is responsible for our Sensory perception, memory and speech thus learning a language leads to greater mental agility, flexibility and creativity. - improved reading across languages; toddlers can use their language skills to aid second language learning. They use their languages to benefit each other. 2. Social benefits- (Improved multi-tasking) In a highly competitive market, it is essential that our children learn to multi task. Learning another language is a multi-tasking activity. Once acquired they are constantly switching back and forth, filtering out what is needed or unnecessary. They will be exceptional multi-taskers and also able to pay attention in ways that monolingual children are not able. 3. Social, linguistic and cognitive benefits- Global competitive advantage
In many countries around the world (e.g Singapore) it is very normal to speak several languages before a child reaches three.
Children are expected to learn several languages simultaneously to reach the many communities that live within the country. It is
seen as an ‘elite’ accomplishment; in certain regions being able to speak one language only is seen as a social negative. Our
European neighbours such as Holland and Belgium also raise their children bilingual and such is the demand for greater skills, and
competitive advantage that many universities are expecting additional skills and languages feature highly.
4. Social benefits- Family learning and attachment
If you are also learning the language from scratch, this is a special activity that will show your toddler the benefits of investing
time in something new together. This is a time of bonding and understanding for both of you as you embark on the journey
together. It is important to create the ‘need’ for the language. Thus the amount of effort you put in will determine the rewards
you reap. This is an activity that you will not outgrow for years to come.

5. Linguistic benefits- Improved first language- greater grasp of own language
Having the knowledge of a second language enables us to compare and contrast our first which we often acquired without too
much in depth investigation of the grammar and structure of the language. Children use their knowledge of a language and relate
it back and forth with the next. You may hear a child use incorrect sentence structure in one language borrowing it and using it in
the next. This is investigation and by trial and error and correction this will settle. Think back to your first language, no one spoke
it perfectly from day one.
The Cornell Language Acquisition Lab (CLAL) in fact state that learning a second language helps your first and thus renders the
myth useless that learning several languages can confuse or delay a child. Every one of us is unique and develops at a different
speed to the other.
6. Social benefits- Cultural connections and ‘worldliness’
Some families are spanned across continents, if you are lucky to have native family speakers abroad then teaching your child that
language will help keep that family connection real and alive. Building family ties abroad is a way of preserving heritage, history,
memories, stories and traditions. Those who do not have any family abroad can still tap into the rich advantages via Pen pals,
holiday language immersion learning programmes and skype buddies in the target language.
7. Cognitive and social benefits- Confidence
You can provide your child with a sense of accomplishment. Learning languages gives an opportunity for growth and
development. Toddlers are naturally very curious and learning another language can satisfy the desire for new discovery. Toddlers
do not naturally say ‘I can’t’, they are willing vessels of learning. They key is to stay calm and embed the routine of language
learning. They will mimic you.
9. Social benefit- Your enjoyment is their enjoyment
If you do get very involved in this task then hopefully you will make friends with others in the same boat (bilingual playgroups etc)
and embark on the journey together. Your children will have bilingual playmates and you will reap the rewards of your labours.
You are raising a child that will have a head start in life.
A child raised with two or more languages will have a greater sensitivity to other cultures, creeds and customs. There is never a
better time to start than now. Try it today! Don’t be put off by not being a native speaker.. it is not essential!
