VOCATION VIEW
Jesus emptied himself and took the form of a
slave. Am I willing to empty myself to follow
the Lord? Consider a call to priesthood or religious life.
(Philippians 2:1-11) ~Vocations Committee
SCRIPTURE STUDY Sunday Scripture Study for Adults will begin to-
day and each Sunday from 11 a.m. until 12 p.m. in
the MC Room (South of the Church in the Parish Family
Center). We invite new participants to join us. There is a small
charge to copy materials for the class.
We will be reflecting on Sunday's Scripture readings as the two
disciples on the Road to Emmaus with Jesus by breaking open the
word of God, answering and asking questions, and finding ways
to apply the Sunday readings in our everyday lives. Hopefully, we
will recognize Jesus in breaking open the word of God, in sharing
it with one another, and in the breaking of the bread (Eucharist) at
Sunday Mass.
For information contact Jeanette Hardin at 778-3684.
SPECIAL REQUEST FOR PRAYERS for this week are:
+Dr. Antonio Talusan, +Gaynell Donaldson
+Josefina Rodriguez; Felipe Garcia
Crystal McMillan; Gayle Smothers
Our Prayer Line has the complete list of
prayer requests.
PARISH VOCATIONS CROSS NOW
AVAILABLE AT ALL MASSES
All parishioners are encouraged to sign up to receive the Parish
Vocations Cross at any Mass you desire – all Masses are now
participating on the first Sunday (also Saturday night Vigil) of
each month. A family, couple, or individual can receive the Parish
Vocation Cross and special prayers written to accompany it at the
beginning of the first Sunday Mass (and Saturday night Vigil). In
taking the Vocations Cross they commit themselves to pray
during the month, in the name of our parish, the vocation prayers
in thanksgiving for all those generously sharing in Church
ministry and to pray for an increase in vocations to the priesthood
and religious life.
Everyone is invited to participate in this program. There is a sign
up sheet in the back of the church as well as at the Adoration
Chapel. We encourage you to sign up for one of the months and
then to attend the designated Mass that month to receive the Par-
ish Vocation Cross. It is our hope that this experience will encour-
age each of us to take seriously our vocation as a member of the
Body of Christ and encourage ALL of us to pray for the gift of
vocations to priesthood, religious life, married and single life (not
just the parishioners with the Vocations Cross for the month!). We believe the Spirit is calling forth men and women from our
faith community of Christ the King to these roles of service. May
our prayer help inspire young women and men to be attentive to
the movement of the Spirit within them and to step forward in
faith and with generous hearts to wherever the Spirit leads them.
Questions? Please call the parish office at 792-6168, Dcn. Gary
Simmons at 794-4384 or Bill Lintz at 799-2903. Thank you again
for this ministry of vocation prayer in the name of our parish of
Christ the King Cathedral.

TWENTY-SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
OUR GUARDIAN ANGELS
“According to the Christian tradition, angels and humans –
though different – are not different kinds of things. Both angels
and humans are things that are capable of knowing and loving
God. Angels do this more excellently than humans, but both do
it” (Charles Camosy, For Love of Animals: Christian Ethics,
Consistent Action).
Each day we are challenged to give in to sin, but our Lord who
loves us “Commands his angels with regard to you, to guard
you wherever you go” (Psalm 91:11). Jesus just before he was
crucified prayed to God “Holy Father, keep them in your name
that you have given me so that they may be one just as we
are” (John 17:11). Our loving Father even sent the Holy Spirit
to continuously watch us and guide our steps when tempted,
strengthen our character when we’re threatened and sustain us
when we are weak. St. Joseph quite possibly was the first
guardian angel, or at very least he performed that role in terms
of guarding and protecting Jesus and his mother, Mary.
“From infancy to death human life is surrounded by their
watchful care and intercession. Beside each believer stands an
angel as protector and shepherd leading him to life. Already
here on earth the Christian life shares by faith in the blessed
company of angels and men united to God” (Catechism of the
Catholic Church, no. 336).
Mother Angelica says "What would it hurt you, when you wake
up, to have a little conversation with your angel? Say, ‘Thank
you, angel, for watching over me during the night. Pray for me
today that I do not offend God.’ It is a simple thing. Remember
your guardian angel sees the face of the Father in heaven.”
“St. John Vianney taught that we should imitate the angels in
their consciousness of the presence of God. In his 'Sermon on
Holy Communion,' he said, 'We ought to ask the Blessed Vir-
gin, the angels, and the saints to pray for us that we may receive
the good God as worthily as it is possible for us to receive Him.'
Ponder these words and pray that your own guardian angel will
enlighten you and guide you on the path to heaven. Here is a
simple prayer: Angel of God, my guardian dear, to whom God’s
love commits me here. Ever this day be at my side, to light and
guard, to rule and guide. Amen” (Donna-Marie Cooper
O’Boyle, Our Lady of Fatima: 100 Years of Stories, Prayers,
and Devotions).
“Heavenly Father, in your divine plan you sent forth your an-
gels, to participate in the great work of our salvation. Thank you
for all that is done through the heavenly host on our behalf.
May we eagerly follow their example of active participation in
your salvific work, that we too may proclaim your glory and
assist others along the journey to your heavenly kingdom.
Amen" (Fr. Jim Gallagher, C.S.C.).
PRAY THE “LIVING ROSARY” WITH US AT
ENCOUNTER
October is the month of the Holy Rosary and Oct. 13 marks
the 100th anniversary of the apparitions of Our Lady, spe-
cifically the Miracle of the Sun, to the three little
shepherd children, Lucia de Jesus, Francisco and Jacinta
Marto, in Fatima, Portugal. Both are great reasons to
introduce people and rededicate ourselves to the devotion of
praying the Rosary.
You are invited for a unique prayer service of the “Living
Rosary.” Make a festive memory of these extraordinary
events, bringing our community of Christ the King
Cathedral together around the Rosary. How do you pray the
Living Rosary? Let us show you how – come pray with us!
encounter the Living Rosary, Wednesday, Oct 4 at 6 p.m. in
the Ben Kasteel Hall of the Family Activity Center.
Come join us in studying
Celebrating the Mass, a six
lesson series from Loyola Press.
The series will be conducted in
a small group discussion format. Each month we will go on
a guided discovery of understanding why we celebrate the
Mass. We will explore the connections between what we
find in Scripture and our own lives. In a general way, the
sequence of themes in our Scriptural readings follow the
sequence of events in the Mass.
Our next time together will be Oct. 10 for Lesson 3,
“Thanks and Praise Are Just Right.” In this reflection on
Scripture we turn our attention to giving God praise and
thanksgiving.
Some questions we will be exploring include: What do we
thank God for? What should we thank God for? What
happens when we give thanks? How can our thanks turn
into praise? If God does not need our praise, why do we
praise God?
Each participant will receive their own book, free of charge.
This is an opportunity for everyone, from Neophytes to
longtime Catholics, to learn more about the Mass, and to
form connections with others who are studying and growing
in our Catholic faith. Come to one, several, or all sessions;
each lesson stands alone.
The Journey Continues meets the second Tuesday of each
month from 6:30-8 p.m. in the Ben Kasteel Hall in the
Family Activity Center. Light snacks will be provided.

The annual appeal for Adopt-a-Student Program has begun for the
2017-2018 school year. All CTK Cathedral parishioners should
have already received information in the mail for their prayerful
consideration. The students and faculty remember donors and
those memorialized with gifts in our prayers throughout the
school year. Approximately one-third of CTKC School students
request some level of financial support in order to attend the
school. With your help, we can make every effort to aid these
students and their families so that as many as possible can receive
their education in CTKC School’s faith-filled environment. If
you are interested in supporting the Adopt-a-Student Program and
have not received your information in the mail, or if you would
like to receive more information or ask questions, please contact

Adopt-a-Student Program Provides Financial Aid for
CTKC School Students
In 1990, the Catholic bishops of the United States issued a state-
ment in support of Catholic elementary and secondary schools. In
it they affirmed their strong conviction that Catholic elementary
and secondary schools are of great value to our Church and our
nation; and that, in their role as chief teachers, they are each re-
sponsible for the total educational ministry of the local
Church. They call on the entire Catholic community—clergy,
religious, and laity—to assist in addressing the critical financial
questions that continue to face our Catholic schools. This requires
the Catholic community to make both personal and financial sac-
rifices to overcome these financial challenges. The burden of sup-
porting our Catholic schools can no longer be placed exclusively
on the individual parishes that have schools and on parents who
pay tuition. (excerpts from USCCB document - Renewing Our
Commitment to Catholic Elementary and Secondary Schools in
the Third Millennium.)
Given this call to support Catholic education, CTKC School’s
annual “Adopt A Student” Program provides financial aid to
families of school students who might not otherwise be able to
attend CTKC School. This annual appeal makes it possible for
any individual or family to assist a child in paying either a portion
or full tuition for the school year. By participating, parishioners
can pass on the blessings of their faith and reaffirm the value of
Catholic education as outlined by the USCCB. Donations for last
school year totaled almost $40,000 in tuition support! We appre-
ciate the generosity our parishioners have shown to our students!

WHEN YOU 'ADOPT' A STUDENT Jesus often interrupted his preaching to call atten-
tion to the value of a precious child. On the day
the disciples ordered the mothers to take their
little ones home, Jesus said "Let the children come to Me,
and let nothing hinder them." God's greatest gift to a family
is a child created in God's image to love and be loved.
Your gift to an 'adopted' students helps to open the door to a
Catholic education.
