Family Grand Lake Getaway July 19-21. That

event is a wonderful opportunity to show

legislators from throughout the State of

Oklahoma all that Grand Lake has to offer.

Our popular Friday afternoon Horse

Race competition continues every Friday this

month, with our big 4th of July Alternate Shot

Horse Race scheduled for Friday, July 6. The

ladies are also busy this month with an SLW-

GA Horse Race planned Saturday, July 14 –

and they wrap up the month with their an-

nual Eclectic Tournament beginning Monday,

July 30.

With a great line-up of corporate, asso-

ciation, and family events and weddings at

the Resort Hotel added on top of that array

of member events, July is going to be a busy,

busy month for our team at Shangri-La.

Thank you!

I also want to offer my sincere “thank you” to our members, guests, and all the

voters of Delaware County who voted over-

whelmingly to repeal antiquated county re-

strictions on the sale of alcoholic beverages

for on-premises consumption. As we seek a

level playing field with our tourism and con-

vention competitors in Oklahoma City, Tul-

sa, Branson, and beyond, that vote is a big

step forward for our resort as well as

many, many other Delaware County busi-

nesses. We look forward to providing your

favorite beverage throughout the Sunday

Brunch schedule!

It was really nice of the “Living Grand

on Grand Lake” television program team

to feature our Director of Food & Bever-

age and Executive Chef Michael Bujold on

their program in June. This month, they

will also do a feature story on President

Kennedy’s personal speed boat which is

now on permanent display in the Shangri-

La Resort Hotel lobby.

Incidentally, if you haven’t seen the

display of Restofus, it is worth a special trip!

The 17-foot Century Resorter is far more

than a beautiful 1961 vintage mahogany

boat. It carries with it an incredible history of the Kennedy family members and guests

who enjoyed the vessel in its early years.

We are excited about the continued

success of our residential real estate ven-

tures at Shangri-La. A number of lots have

been sold in our newest development, The

Ridge at Shangri-La, and this month we are

adding to the construction schedule. The

first three homes are completed and occu-

pied. Three more are under contract and

nearing completion, and four spec homes

are nearing completion, as well, in what

will ultimately be a 38-home development

overlooking the lake, the club house, and

the Champions Nine. All homes at The

Gallery at Shangri-La are completed and

only three homes remain for sale in that

unique gated community directly across

from the club house. Please contact

Coldwell Banker Shangri-La Realty if you’re

interested in becoming a more permanent

part of Shangri-La and Monkey Island Com-

munities.

As always, our commitment is to you,

our members and guests, and we constant-

ly strive to exceed your expectations in an

effort to continually earn your support. Be sure to follow our progress and our up-

coming events on our website at

www.shangrilaok.com and “Like” us on

Facebook. We always look forward to

seeing you at Shangri-La

Shangri-La was delighted to host PGA Tour up and

coming star, Kiradech Aphibarnrat in June. He is

currently the 29th ranked player in the world and

finished 15th at the US Open last month. Pictured

We always have great compliments about the Sunday Brunch at

The Summit Restaurant – and many members and guests have

commented about how much they appreciate a good breakfast

buffet at Doc’s on the weekends, allowing them to have a great

morning meal quickly and get out to the pool, on the golf

course, or on the water. Thank you.

I had a wonderful honor last month when the “Grand Liv-

ing on Grand Lake” television show did a lengthy feature on my

history – and an interview that might have seemed even longer.

I really had a wonderful time re-tracing my career steps, favor-

ite recipes, and favorite memories. I appreciate their producers

and staff for thinking of me. It was a lot of fun.

We have extended hours of operation for Eddy’s and the

Summit over the 4th of July week. In addition to our regular

scheduled hours of operation, the Summit Restaurant will offer

lunch and dinner service both Tuesday and Wednesday, July 3

and 4. Eddy’s will open at 5:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 3 – and will

open at 11:00 a.m. July 4-8. I hope you will join us for some

great holiday food – and some great fun.

Saturday, July 7 is the date of the Monkey Island Fireworks, of course – and we will have hot dogs, popcorn, cotton candy,

soft drinks, wine, and beer available in a concession area on the

Grand Lawn of the Resort Hotel beginning at 6:00 p.m. on the

evening of the fireworks.

Summer menus are in place at all three of our dining ven-

ues – The Summit, Doc’s, and Eddy’s. I hope you enjoy some of

the new dishes available. As always, Chef Julie Morgan has some

incredible desserts on the menu, so be sure and save a little

room for some sweetness to top off your meal.

Thank you so much for your continued support and for

your kind compliments about our food & beverage service –

and thank you for including Shangri-La in your plans with family

and friends. If there is anything we can do to enhance your din-

ing experience, please let me know. In the meantime…

Bon Appetit. Let’s eat!

For Event Questions or Reservations, call The Summit at 918-257-4200.

Culinary Conversation Michael Bujold, Executive Chef and Director of F&B

Executive Chef Michael Bujold could not be more excited about the June 26

liquor election in Delaware County.

Sunday Brunch at the Summit and the Sunday Breakfast Buffet at

Doc’s are a lot more enjoyable now – and folks gathering at Eddy’s

Sundays before 1:00 p.m. have a nice surprise, as well. Thanks to the

voters of Delaware County, antiquated liquor laws have been repealed

and we are able to serve alcoholic beverages on Sundays during the

same hours we serve them the entire rest of the week – 10:00 a.m.

until 2:00 a.m.

Aside from the inconvenience to our members and guests of the

erratic liquor service hours of the past, it will be nice to be like the rest

of the state and region – and not put our servers in the position of

trying to explain to confused and irritated guests why they can’t have

their favorite beverage on Sunday mornings like they enjoy everywhere

else they go in other locales. I can’t tell you how valuable the change in

the liquor laws will be to our future tourism and convention business,

not only at Shangri-La, but throughout the entire Grand Lake area.

I hope everyone is enjoying our two special weekend offerings.

Kenny “Tippy Toes” Cole and John Lewis took top honors in the Shan-

gri-La Men’s Golf Association 2-Man Shamble Tournament June 16.

Richard Lippitt and Scott Brecheisen took top net scoring honors in the

MGA 2-Man Shamble Tournament.

Here Comes the 4th of July Week!!

The 2018 Independence Day Celebration this year is not a “day” at all.

Since the 4th of July is on a Wednesday, it’s a 10-day celebration, and the Shan-

gri-La Marina crew will be on hand with extended hours of operation to take

care of all your boating needs.

Eddy’s Lakeside Bar has rapidly become a lakeside favorite and will have

expanded hours of operation for the holiday – opening at 5:00 Tuesday, July 3

– and at 11:00 every day July 4-8. Our live entertainment offerings at Eddy’s

have certainly been a huge hit with boaters, locals, and landlubbers, alike. You

might want to plan in advance for Saturday night entertainment at Eddy’s this

month including Three Dollar Rocket (7th), Mary-Heather and the Sinners (14th),

and the Risky Business Band (21st). Bands normally perform 8:00-11:00 p.m., but

Three Dollar Rocket will play until midnight on Saturday, July 7 as part of the

Monkey Island Fireworks presentation and the family fun festival at Shangri-La

that evening.

Sail Grand Waterfront

The official arrival of the summer season on Grand Lake also means sum-

mer hours of operation at Sail Grand Waterfront at Shangri-La Marina – and

the return of jet boat, pontoon, and personal watercraft rental, parasailing,

and yacht charters. A variety of rental vessels including multiple sizes of pon-toon boats, jet boats and personal watercraft are lined up for rent at Sail

Grand. Yacht charters are also available, in addition to parasailing adventures.

Sail Grand Waterfront at Shangri-La Marina is open seven days a week –

9:00-6:00 Monday through Thursday, and 9:00-7:00 on Friday, Saturday and

Sunday. It’s a popular spot for visitors, and demand is particularly high during

the upcoming holiday week, so it’s always wise to plan ahead and reserve the

boat, personal watercraft, parasailing adventure or yacht charter time well in

advance. Call 918-257-6000 for reservations.

all on hand at your one-stop on-the-water shopping

spot – Shangri-La Marina Ship Store. We also offer full

operation of our all-new (and very quick) pump-out

system at the fuel dock. And yes, we have diesel fuel as

well as gasoline.

Eddy’s Lakeside Bar also has a selection of Eddy’s

logoed merchandise including shirts, tees, caps, and

souvenir items to save your memories of your summer

fun at Grand Lake and Shangri-La Resort!

If there is any way we may be of service to make

your boating adventures more enjoyable, please don’t

hesitate to let me know. Follow us on Facebook at

Shangri-La Marina & Boat Sales or on our website at

www.shangrilaok.com. Please let me know if there is

any way we can make your boating experience more

enjoyable. I look forward to seeing everyone over the

upcoming holiday.

Doc’s Bar & Grill Manager Brandon Rascoe:

Food & Beverage Service is in his DNA!

Brandon Rascoe has wanted to be in the Food & Beverage

business since he was 6 years old. Somebody with that kind of love

for the business made him the perfect choice to join the Shangri-La

team as Manager of Doc’s Bar & Grill. He actually serves double

duty at the resort, also shouldering responsibilities as Manager on

Duty for the entire resort during evening hours.

When he recalls going to work with his mother at the restau-

rant where she worked in Hot Springs, Arkansas when he was just

five years old. That’s when he first got the bug.

“I was fascinated watching the chefs in the kitchen,” he recalls.

“I would go home and watch Julia Child’s television program. I

loved everything about the business.”

After moving to the Jay, Oklahoma area when he was ten

years old, his fascination continued. He got a job as a bus boy at

the old Lakeside Restaurant at Honey Creek Landing in Grove

when he was 14. By the time he was 17, he was Kitchen Supervi-

sor. While working at Lakeside, he also interned under a Certified

Executive Chef.

After a year with Sysco Foods, he went to work for a time in

Longview, Texas. A particular girl caught his eye, and he followed her to Austin.

“I moved to Austin for the girl, and of course, we broke up

after only a couple of months – but by then I had fallen in love with

the city,” he laughs.

Staff Spotlight: Brandon Rascoe, Doc’s Bar & Grill Manager by Mike Williams, Director of Communications

He remained in Austin, working as a mechanic at night

while attending classes at the Culinary Arts Institute. After an

automobile accident, he worked for a time in a medical billing

business; but the food & beverage business kept calling his

name.

He went to work at Baker Street Pub and Sherlock’s in

Austin, quickly working his way up the ladder, serving eight

years as Kitchen Manager. During his stint at Baker Street, he

and a buddy decided to try their hand at restaurant owner-

ship.

“He was a front-of-the-house guy, so putting the menu

together and getting the kitchen operational was my responsi-

bility,” Brandon says. “We opened a place called Lebowski’s

Grill in a bowling alley. I kept my job at Baker Street because

we weren’t busy enough for both of us to work there full-

time; but by 2011, we were growing so fast, I had to go to

work at Lebowski’s. In 2017, we opened a second location. It

was fabulous,” he says. “We were rated as the #2 burger in

Austin – and one of the top 5 sandwiches. That’s a pretty

good deal for a bowling alley grill in a city like Austin.” Then, he got the call that his daughter, Belle Hembree,

was pregnant. She lives at Grand Lake where she works as a

server at Shangri-La’s Summit Restaurant.

“I told my partner I had to be closer to my daughter. I

sold some of my ownership in Lebowski’s, but I still work on

their menus and I still own 25 percent of the business; and I

became a silent partner instead of a hands-on manager.

“I came to Grand Lake for Christmas last winter, and

stayed at Shangri-La. My daughter showed me around, and I

really liked what I saw. She kept me informed, and I got in

touch with (COO) Jon Davidson and Chef Mike – and planned

a schedule for getting back to Grand Lake and trying to get

involved at Doc’s. My final interview was May 15 – and Jon

and Chef Mike made me an offer that I was happy to accept.”

When he has spare time, which isn’t often, Brandon loves

the outdoors – kayaking, hiking, as well as sports and

“anything that goes fast.” He enjoys reading and has such a

strong love of music that he once thought of becoming a mu-

sic producer. But food & beverage has always outweighed

every other interest- and his commitment to Doc’s is total.

“I like everything to run like a top,” he says. “I just want

to make sure we always put our best food forward. I’m all in. I

want us to be the best we can possibly be.”

Shangri-La Member Profile: Charlie & Patricia Mitchell by Mike Williams, Director of Communications

Shangri-La Resort

Patricia and Charlie Mitchell are hooked on Grand Lake –

and hooked on Shangri-La!

Charlie and Patricia Mitchell are well into their second decade

as Grand Lakers – and are now completing their first decade as full-

time lakers. It’s not unusual for Tulsa natives like Patricia to end up

at Oklahoma’s crown jewel of tourism – but the trip was far more

circuitous for Charlie who grew up in Paisley, Scotland. His arrival in

northeastern Oklahoma was a ten-year ordeal, leading from Scot-

land to Toronto, New York, Hawaii, Toronto a second time – and

back to Tulsa and Grand Lake.

Charlie first signed to play professional soccer for Scotland’s St.

Mirren F.C (Football Club) when he was only 16 years old.

“When I was 21, I was ‘loaned’ to the Toronto Italia,” he re-

calls. “It was a whole new experience for me. In Scotland, it was a

constant fight just to keep your position because it was so competi-

tive. It was the national sport. In Canada, they gave me a Mustang to

drive and an apartment with another player. I thought I was in Hol-

lywood,” he laughs.

When he returned to Scotland, he recalls saying such wonder-

ful things about his year in North America that the management of

the team finally sold him to the Rochester Lancers in New York.

They won the championship his first year. From there he went to play for the New York Cosmos, a

move he refers to as “easily the highlight of my soccer career. I had

incredible teammates like Pele; and we played our games in Yankee

Stadium before we moved to the new Giants Stadium in New Jer-

sey.”

From New York, Charlie went to the islands to play for Team

Hawaii – a franchise that eventually became the Tulsa Roughnecks,

resulting in Charlie’s introduction to Oklahoma. He was a player

and assistant coach for a year – then had an opportunity to return

to Toronto as a player-coach. Before long, he was back in Tulsa as

Head Coach of the Roughnecks. He knew he would be back some-

how or another. Oklahoma was in his blood.

“I actually never sold my house when I moved to Toronto from

Tulsa, because I knew I would someday move back to Tulsa when I

left soccer. So that was a great opportunity for me to come back to

Tulsa as a head coach.”

During his two-year tenure as head coach, he met several peo-

ple who were involved in the restaurant business. Charlie was ex-

tremely popular in the Tulsa area, and the restaurant operators

asked he would like to open a restaurant with his name on the mar-

quee.

“At first I was just going to be a name, but when I lost

my coaching job, I became an active worker in the business,”

Charlie recalls. Charlie Mitchell’s became a dining and drink-

ing destination. Ultimately, Charlie bought his partners out

and ended up with four restaurants in Tulsa over the ensuing

twelve years.

As Charlie arrived in Tulsa, Patricia was finishing mar-

keting studies at the University of Tulsa. Ironically, she went

to work at Charlie Mitchell’s Restaurant in downtown Tulsa.

As the saying goes, the rest is history. The two have been

together since 1992. They were married in Charlie’s native

Scotland in 1998.

Charlie returned to soccer, taking over the program at

Northeastern State University, leading the team into the

conference playoffs. He also established a women’s soccer

club at NSU then the Bixby Highlanders Futbal Club in 1997

where he became the Director of Coaching.

Patricia moved on to accept a position with fast-growing

Schlotzsky’s as Director of Marketing and Catering where she remained for 15 years.

“That’s my story,” Patricia jokes. “Charlie has such a

storied history – but my story is, ‘I went to school, went to

work for Charlie Mitchells, met Charlie, went to work for

Schlotzsky’s, and moved to the lake.’ That’s it,” she laughs.

During his time playing and coaching in Tulsa and in

subsequent years, Charlie came to Monkey Island on week-

ends to get away. He fondly remembers going to the lake for

the first time, enjoying days out on the boat and playing in

the Mickey Mantle tournaments on the old Shangri-La

course. Charlie was a member of the old Shangri-La, and it

was during play in a Mickey Mantle Celebrity Classic at Shan-

gri-La that he met Dick Seybolt, owner of Oswego, Kansas-

based Diamond Coach.

“Dick offered me a position in sales at Diamond Coach

in 2005,” Charlie says. “That was perfect because it allowed

me to live at Grand Lake. I’ve been so fortunate. I enjoyed

playing soccer. I enjoyed coaching. I enjoyed the restaurant

business – and I love what I do now. I’ve been a very lucky

man.”

The Mitchells bought their first place at Grand Lake in

Monkey Island’s Vista Tower in 2006. In 2009, they decided

to make the Grand Lake move as full-timers.

“It’s a short drive to Oswego from Grand Lake for

Charlie, so we sold our condo at Vista Tower to my mother,

sold our house in Tulsa, and moved to the Polo Club full

time.”

The Mitchells are extremely active members at Shangri-

La. Charlie loves to play golf, they utilize all three dining ven-

ues consistently, as well as other Monkey Island venues, and

they are dedicated to weekly participation in the Friday after-

noon “Yellow Rabbit Run Horse Race” competition at Shan-

gri-La, an event named in honor of their friend, the late Gary

Boeve.

“We love boating, and we often come to Shangri-La by

boat. We’ll take the shuttle to the Summit or the golf course

– and we especially enjoy the al fresco dining at Doc’s Bar &

Grill,” Patricia says.

Speaking of the Summit, Charlie and Patricia happily

recall when they won the restaurant’s Halloween costume contest in 2015.

SLWGA News By Janeice Luper

The Shangri La Women’s Association (SLWGA) ushered in the

first month of summer play with Monday play days, a Saturday scramble

for all Shangri La Women Golfers, and the La Tee Da Invitational Tour-

nament. Great golf and fun times were played by all women golfers

who participated in these events. SLWGA’s Saturday Scrambles are always great fun – and if you

missed it, you missed a lot of laughs. Thanks to Linda Ballard for chair-ing this event, as well as the upcoming SLWGA Saturday Horse Race,

scheduled for Saturday, July 14th at 2 p.m. Any Shangri La woman golfer

can sign-up for this event on the sheet outside the Pro Shop. Details

about the Horse Race are included on the sign-up sheet. But, back to

the Scramble. Coming in 1st place was the team consisting of Linda Bal-

lard, Pat Dunn, and Linda McCulla, with a score of 32 for the 9 holes

played. Coming in 2nd place with a score of 35 were Judi Barber, Jan

Castelli, Leta Carson, and Vicki Graper. Taking 3rd place were Nancy

Adkisson, Lisette Costin, Lynn Goss, and Gaylyn Hayes, also shooting

35. The Shangri La Tee Da Invitation Tournament, chaired by Ann

Turner and Liz Paden, just seems to keep getting more popular each

year. This year’s tournament hosted 130 players (49 teams) from

“Guess what we were,” Charlie chimes in.

“C’mon, I’m Scottish,” he hints. “Braveheart!”

Whether it is indulging in their favorite past

time of boating, competing in the Shangri-La

horse races and costume contests or enjoying

relaxed dining, Charlie and Patricia Mitchell adore

Monkey Island. In fact, their plan is to sell their

Polo Club home and return to the Island.

“We utter the phrase ‘thank God for Eddy

Gibbs’ about once a week,” Patricia says. “The

addition of amenities at the resort makes it such a

wonderful family destination. The resort pool is

where our friends and family always want to be.

It’s such a wonderful atmosphere for families. Our

family is here a lot more now because of all that

Shangri-La has to offer. Monkey Island is such a

community now – and the atmosphere is so great.

That’s why we’re interested in moving back to

Monkey Island. We’re over here all the time, any-

way,” she laughs. “It’s the place to be.”

“The old saying is that ‘a smile meets a smile

and a frown meets a frown.’ We love it here,”

Charlie says, “because you don’t ever meet too

many frowns.”
