6U VME and cPCI SBCsThe safe COTS computer boards A602 (6U VMEbus) and D602 (6U

CompactPCI) have been developed according to DO-254 especially

for airborne (up to DAL-A) or railway (up to SIL 4) applications. Both

boards provide complete triple redundancy of the hardware.

Each one provides three PowerPC 750 processors running in

lock-step mode with 2-out-of-3 voting implemented in FPGA and

software-assisted resynchronisation, while their triple redundant dynamic

512 MB memory automatically corrects upsets caused by cosmic

radiation (SEU) and hardware faults.

The system is powered by redundant local power supplies with

separate power supplies for the three CPUs and the three main

memory banks.

By building up a lock-step architecture, software overhead is kept

extremely low, because virtually the hardware components are visible

only once for the programming.

Standard I/O of both boards is realised in the FPGA and is ac-

cessible at the rear. For realising additional I/O, two PMC slots are

provided on each board. The first can be accessed via front or rear

I/O and can be used with all standard PMC modules. The second slot

is reserved for connection of an AFDX PMC via rear I/O.

Current sense amplifierLinear Technology has released the LT6109, a high side

current sense device that incorporates a current sense

amplifier, dual comparators and a precision 400 mV volt-

age reference.

When connected to a current shunt resistor, the amplifier

precisely extracts the shunt voltage, amplifies it and trans-

lates it to ground. This output is available for monitoring

and can be connected to either of the on-chip comparators.

The device is suitable for current measurement and load

current fault monitoring, especially since each element offers

precision and speed.

The amplifier has less than 350 µV of offset and the

combined threshold error of the comparators and refer-

ence is less than 2%. From the input of the amplifier to

the output of the comparators, the amplifier responds to

threshold exceeding events within 1.4 µs.

External resistors set the amplifier gain and comparator

trip points and since the gain resistors are the primary

determinants of the amplifier’s accuracy, using precision resistors enables

accuracy better than 1%.

Two versions of the device are available, the LT6109-1 and the

LT6109-2. The comparator inputs of the LT6109-1 are connected to the

internal reference in opposing polarity, allowing for window comparison,

such as for overcurrent and undercurrent conditions.

The comparator inputs of the LT6109-2 are connected in the same polar-

ity, allowing for two threshold levels, such as “warning” and “emergency

disconnect”. The open-drain outputs ensure easy interface to other system

components and comparator latching enables detection of high-speed events.

LED driver IC Renesas has released the R2A20134 LED driver IC that supports

LED lighting applications with high efficiency and a high power

factor at low cost.

Voltage step-down control (single-stage) provides a high line-

to-ground voltage. In addition, the ability to select low-voltage

MOSFETs (voltage tolerance of only 500 to 300 V, rather than the

typical 700 V) contributes to lower system cost.

High-voltage control and critical-conduction mode enable zero-

current switching at turn on and switching in a low drain-source

voltage state.

As a result, the driver enables reduction of power loss during

switching and achieves the power factor of 92% by reducing the

power loss during switching.

In addition, critical-conduction mode allows power factor cor-

rection (PFC) control using few external components and realises a power factor of

0.9 or higher.

A variety of control modes can be achieved by changing the configuration of the

externally connected elements. Examples include buck-boost control, average-current

control, peak-current control and constant-input-power control.

The driver can also be used in Triac dimmer applications by applying a voltage

matched to the Triac phase to the FB (feedback) pin for constant-current control.

IGBT moduleSemikron has released its latest MiniSKiiP IGBT power semi-

conductor module, which is now also available in three-level

topology.

The module has a rated current of 4.9 A/cm² and one phase

leg per module, enabling the development of compact inverters

with output power of up to 85 kVA. The module is character-

ised by the fast single-screw assembly and optimised for the

manufacture of three-level solar inverters and UPS systems.

The rated current per unit of area is up to twice that of other three-level modules. Since no solid busbars are

needed between the three phases/modules, more compact inverters can be made. The reverse voltage of the

IGBTs and diodes used has been increased to 650 to enable DC link voltages of 900 for 480 three-phase power

applications. Each module has a three-level phase leg with sufficient space for 10 power semiconductors each.

Thermal and electrical connection between the module and the heat sink and the driver board is established

with a single screw or two screws for rated module currents of up to 150 or 200 A. This means that solder

equipment and time-consuming soldering processes are done away with in the assembly stage.

For solar inverter output power of 60 kVA and above, ie, for rated current of 150 A and higher, modules with

screw connections were previously used for the busbars.

Using the device, 200 A three-level modules allow the busbars to be replaced with cheaper PCBs in inverters

with outputs of up to 85 kVA.

ments. This approach provides virtual machines a greater sphere of mobility, increases network

use, creates more resilient networks and simplifies the management of data centre networks.

The Brocade VDX 6720 data centre switches are available in 1U or 2U form factors and can

scale from 16 to 60 ports with pay-as-you-grow ports on demand licensing. The switches pro-

vide a full 10 Gbps wire-speed performance from any port to any port, with latency of 600 ns.

The switches are based on low-latency, lossless, 10 Gbps data centre bridging technology

and can run all types of data and storage traffic – including traditional IP, iSCSI, CIFS, NFS

and fibre channel over ethernet.

The switches are the first to deliver the company’s VCS technology that includes virtual

cluster switching capabilities, transforming data centre networks through innovations that are

optimised for highly virtualised and cloud environments.

Optical-coupled MOSFETRenesas has developed an optical-coupled MOSFET, the

PS7901D-1A, that is claimed to achieve electrical isolation within

the package by using light for signal transmission.

The device is 40% smaller than the PS78 series, while retaining

a guaranteed isolation voltage of 500 rms. The MOSFET combines

low output capacitance and low leakage current making it suitable

for high-frequency signal control in applications such as IC testers.

An optical-coupled MOSFET device combines in a single package

three different elements: on the input side a light-emitting diode

that converts an electrical signal into light, and on the output

side a photo voltaic diode that converts light into an electrical

signal, and an output MOSFET.

The use of light to transmit the signal means that the input and

output sides are isolated from each other electrically. This type

of device is also referred to as a solid state relay. In contrast to

mechanical relays, semiconductor relays are not subject to mal-

function due to worn contacts or contamination by foreign matter.

It has a low output capacitance of 0.75 pF and the MOSFET,

as an output element, uses silicon-on-insulator technology enabling

an output capacitance of 0.75 pF.

The output capacitance is about 25% lower than the 1 pF of

the company’s existing compact-package products. This makes

it possible to suppress signal component leakage and makes

the device suitable for high-frequency operation.

Through optimisation of the gate film structure of the MOSFET,

leakage current is reduced by 70%, from 100 to 30 pA. This

contributes to equipment with high measuring precision.

USB to UART/FIFO interfaceFuture Technology Devices International has further strengthened its range of USB

interface IC products with the release of the FT232H USB2.0 high-speed device.

This single-channel USB to UART/FIFO interface can be configured via EE-

PROM to use a variety of different serial or parallel interfaces. Bundled with the

company’s USB device drivers, this solution enables engineers to add high-speed

USB connectivity into new and legacy peripheral designs with a minimum of

design and support effort.

In addition, the associated UM232H evaluation module allows engineers to

quickly prototype and test the FT232H’s suitability for incorporation into new

system designs.

This USB device controller contains USB, serial and parallel protocol engines,

eliminating any requirement for USB-specific firmware development. The device supports IO interface levels of 3.3 V with 5 V tolerant inputs, making

it suitable for connection to a wide variety of logic, MPUs and FPGAs.

As well as supporting asynchronous serial (UART) interfacing, it also supports interface to many synchronous IOs such as SPI, I2C, JTAG and

FPGA programming interfaces, via its inbuilt multiprotocol synchronous serial engine that can communicate at speeds of up to 30 Mbps. In addi-

tion, MPSSE can be used by design engineers to implement their own synchronous serial bus protocols.

Incorporated as an interface option into the FT232H is the FT1248 bus - a synchronous, half-duplex serial/parallel interface capable of commu-

nicating with external logic at data rates of up to 30 MBps.

The unusual feature of the FT1248 bus is its ability to trade off bandwidth against the number of physical data lines (one, two, four or eight)

available to connect the FT232H to external logic to provide optimum flexibility to the system designer.

Integrated 1.8 and 3.3 V low drop-out voltage regulators reduce external component requirements, while the 1 KB transmitter and receiver data

buffers coupled with USB2.0 high-speed technology offer greatly improved data throughput and reduced latency response times compared with

existing USB2.0-compliant, full-speed products.

Royalty-free drivers for Windows, Linux, MAC and WinCE operating systems are available to download from the FTDI website.

a number of different ways. Various maths and logic

functions are available; characteristic curves can also

be created. The behaviour of the PCAN-Router Pro can

be configured using Windows. Completed configura-

tions are then transferred onto the router via CAN.

The use in heterogeneous CAN networks is enabled

by different CAN transceiver modules (high-speed,

low-speed, single-wire CAN), which can be inserted

on request for each CAN channel.

For energy saving the device can be put into a

sleep mode and reactivated by the wake-up function.

There are three possibilities to do so: by CAN, by

external line or by the integrated, battery-buffered,

real-time clock.

systems in one environment more easily than with signal-based or

input/output-based methods. Enhancements to SimDriveline include

gear loss models that capture meshing and viscous losses for effi-

ciency studies and more accurate and efficient simulation for systems

involving multiple, simultaneous clutch events.

The software is based on Simscape, so that teams can connect

directly to other physical modelling libraries and use other simulation

capabilities, such as data logging and Simscape local solvers. Us-

ing these libraries and capabilities helps engineers spend more time

refining their designs and less time setting up models and tests.

Data managementSatellite Vault, a server application and core element of electronics

design data management technology, has been released.

It can be local-, LAN-, WAN- or cloud-hosted and is used to

create secure, fully managed design data repositories (satellite

vaults) that enable collaborative management of electronic design

data across the design, procurement and manufacturing spaces.

It complements Designer 10, a unified electronic product devel-

opment system, by allowing designers and companies to manage

and share their design, and release data easily.

The vaults can be accessed directly from within Designer 10 or

via a standard browser interface by others in the company, such as

manufacturing and procurement managers or any authorised user.

Vaults form the heart of the company’s smart data management

technologies by providing storage, formal revision management

and lifecycle state management. Design content is automatically

validated when released to a vault from Designer, where the gener-

ated content is stored as named revisions that have a definable

lifecycle status.

Along with managed sharing of validated design content and

the potential for business systems integration, the technology

allows designers to re-use design data with full confidence in its

provenance, lifecycle state (suitable for prototype, production, etc)

and where it has been used in existing designs.

High-density connectorCompactPCI serial PICMG CPCI-S.0 is a new, independent base standard that introduces a connector, which enables a much higher signal density and supports even higher transmission frequencies of 12 Gbps and more.In addition, this connector only supports modern point-to-point connections. The G20 reaches a base frequency of 2.53 GHz. The 64-bit CPU uses hyper threading to provide four virtual processor cores. If the processor load is low, Intel’s Turbo Boost technology makes it pos-sible to reach a frequency of 3.2 GHz.

The computer has a CPU-independent microprocessor in the chipset which is based on the Intel active management technology. The microprocessor can be accessed via the network using the integrated ethernet controller. This way, different functions such as reading status information, changing configurations, switching the PC on and off, forwarding or redirecting I/O devices like hard disks, CD-ROM etc (serial over LAN) and remote control via keyboard/video/mouse are possible. The standard I/O at the board front includes two PCIe-driven gigabit-ethernet and two USB 2.0 interfaces as well as two display ports that can also be used as an HDMI or DVI connection using an external adapter. A total of eight PCI Express links is available. At the rear, eight USB, six SATA, a display or HDMI port, five PCI Express x1 and two PEG x8 ports are provided. For extending the functionality of the device, the mezzanine module GM1 is now available. It is used to lead four of the possible eight ethernet interfaces specified in the CompactPCI Serial standard to the backplane. The four interfaces are implemented on Compact-PCI Serial connector P6 which is directly assembled on the GM1. A microSD card can be plugged additionally.

in continuous wave operation. With a wavelength of about 845 nm, the light

is barely visible to the human eye but is well within the sensitivity range of

the camera chip.

The camera superimposes a two-dimensional picture with information on

the range and surface profile of an object. Industrial applications for this type

of system include gauging fluid levels, grading objects according to size or

shape and obtaining reliable stereoscopic information for controlling robot arms.

The laser diode transmits a light pulse that is reflected back from the

target. Each of the 120x160 pixels of the camera chip records the distance

to the object by measuring a respective phase shift compared with the

emitted light pulse.

The precision of this distance measurement and the range of the sensor increase with the modulating

frequency of the light source.

The device is modulated with 44 MHz and, within the range of 0.1 to 7 m, that enables the camera to

measure distances with an accuracy of up to 30 mm.

USB chargingSummit Microelectronics has introduced its fourth-generation programmable battery charger integrated circuit family for single-cell Li-Ion,

Li-Polymer and Li-FePO4 battery packs.

The SMB231, SMB232 and SMB233 are claimed to integrate the largest feature set in the industry, including compatibility with all

relevant industry standards: USB battery charging revision 1.1, USB 2.0/USB3.0, JEITA safety, IEEE1725 and Chinese USB charging. All

three products allow automatic matching between the AC/DC adapter’s current capability and the portable device’s charging requirements.

Tiny packages and minimum external components allow for small board space and reduced solution cost.

The family is suitable for a wide range of portable devices such as digital still cameras, mobile phones, digital camcorders, wireless

headsets, DECT headsets, portable media/MP3 players (PMP), portable GPS navigation equipment and portable game consoles/controllers.

They simplify system designs by eliminating a number of external components and software requirements.

The devices incorporate Summit’s CurrentPath functionality to allow independent output current paths for the system and the bat-

tery, allowing the system to turn on with a missing or deeply discharged battery. This charging configuration reduces the charge and

discharge cycles on the battery, extending its operating life.

The functionality also allows accurate charge termination, since the devices can detect the current flowing into the battery vs traditional

solutions that can only detect the combined current for battery and system. The devices also include input current limit which allows

USB500/100, USB900/150 or AC/DC operation (300 - 1500 mA).

An additional option is also available for not limiting input current, supporting high system current levels directly from the input

power source, even when the battery is not present.

The packs incorporate automatic power source detection, adhering to the latest USB battery charging specification 1.1. The

SMB231/2/3 devices can also detect non-USB compliant wall adapters. An automatic input current limit capability detects the maxi-

mum current capability of the AC/DC adapter and automatically programs the devices’ input current limit accordingly.

All devices adhere to the Japan Electronics and Information Technology Association safety guidelines, by preventing high charging

voltage and/or current levels during certain low- and high-temperature ranges.

They operate with an input range from +3.7 to +6.2 V and safely withstand continuous input over-voltage up to +20 V (non-operating),

while protecting downstream circuitry.

No-Break DC power range

with SNMP

Innovative Energies uses SNMP (simple network

management protocol) with its No-Break DC range

of battery chargers and power supplies.

SNMP has been designed to more easily manage a diverse

set of networked equipment.

This protocol is commonly used to manage backup power

supplies in major projects such as environmental monitor-

ing, energy distribution systems, emergency radio networks,

backup lighting systems, wastewater plants and CCTV security

camera monitoring.

It allows remote (off-site) monitoring and control of power

supplies in real time through an SNMP manager that has

GUI software allowing users to interact and manage their

power supply functions.

Using the ethernet port, users can access a web-based

server on the power supply unit that enables battery status,

output voltage, battery and load current, temperature and also

control of the battery condition test function to be monitored.

Using SNMP, the server sends out alerts (traps) when set

fault conditions in the power supply are triggered. These traps

are interpreted by the SNMP monitoring software, which can

be programmed to send emails, SMS text alerts or log events.

SNMP is currently available with the company’s ‘I’ and ‘L’

series across the SR100, 250, 500 and 750 range of 100-750

W power supply units.

Inverter platformThe SKiiPRACK high-power converter/inverter platform for industrial applications, including

AC/DC drives, wind power, industrial power supplies and power conversion applications,

is configurable for power ratings ranging from 150 kVA to 3 MVA.

With a power density of more than 12 kVA/litre, it is said to be 25% more compact than

other devices. A single 3 MVA three-phase inverter or 1.5 MVA three-phase four-quadrant

converter can be installed into a standard 600 x 600 x 2000 mm cabinet.

Larger configurations such as a 3 MVA four-quadrant converter can be realised by

mounting the unit side by side in a larger cabinet.

The modular block assembly is available in different versions which are connected together

to configure a complete converter/inverter to the user’s requirement.

Each phase assembly comprises a water-cooled cooling plate, one or two intelligent

power modules, snubbers, a capacitor bank and a low-inductance DC bus bar housed in

a rigid mechanical frame with a sliding mechanism for ease of servicing.

A variety of phase assembly configurations is available. For example, a singular-phase as-

sembly can contain four units to make a three-phase inverter plus brake chopper at 450 kVA.

Alternatively, at the high end of the power scale, one-phase assembly can contain two units connected in parallel to form one phase

of a 3 MVA inverter, with three of these phase assemblies mounted in one cabinet forming a complete three-phase converter/inverter.

A choice of either electrolytic capacitors, or polypropylene capacitors for long lifetime, is available.

Battery monitorThe BMS-001 is a battery monitor that continuously monitors 12 V

lead acid batteries, acting as a ‘fuel gauge’, to estimate the state

of charge and time remaining to discharge.

Clear visual management is achieved through a large LCD

screen, with a backlight for night viewing, which displays a range of

information including volts, amps, state of charge as a percentage,

total charge/discharge cycles and remaining battery life.

The device gives real-time information about the health of the

battery by monitoring the total charge/discharge and will warn

when the battery voltage is low.

The monitor makes an accurate estimate of the state of charge

and allows the user to determine when a battery should be re-

placed or recharged.

Multi-range DC powerThe PSW-Series is a single output multi-range pro-

grammable switching DC power supply covering a

power range up to 1080 W.

The series of products includes six models with the

combination of 30 and 80 V and 360, 720 and 1080 W

maximum output. The multi-range feature allows flexible

and efficient configuration of voltage and current within

the rated power range. As the series can be connected

in series for a maximum of two units or in parallel for

a maximum of three units, the capability of connecting

multiple PSW units for higher voltage or higher current

output provides a broad coverage of applications.

The series is a regulated switching DC power supplies

with high voltage and high current output. It operates in

constant current mode or constant voltage mode within

a wide operating range limited by the output power.

The adjustable slew rate of the series allows users

to set for either output voltage or output current, a

specific rise time at the low- to high-level transition and

a specific fall time at the high to low level transition.

The output on/off delay feature enables the setting

of a specific time delay for output on and off. This is

useful when multiple PSW units are used to generate

various outputs with specific on/off time relations.

A bleed resistor at the power output terminal can

quickly discharge the internal filter capacitors when the

power supply is turned off and the load is disconnected.

The series consists of six models, divided into

three different types covering three power ranges:

Type I (360 W), Type II (720 W), Type III (1080 W);

PSW 30-36 360 W single output with 30 V max

voltage and 36 A max current; PSW 30-72 720 W

single output with 30 V max voltage and 72 A max

current; PSW 30-108 1080 W single output with

30 V max voltage and 108 A max current; PSW 80-

13.5 360 W single output with 80 V max voltage and

13.5 A max current; PSW 80-27 720 W single output

with 80 V max voltage and 27 A max current; PSW

80-40.5 1080 W single output with 80 V max voltage

and 40.5 A max current.

When the power supply is configured that the total

output (current x voltage output) is less than the rated

power output, it functions as a typical constant current

(CC) and constant voltage (CV) power supply.

However, when the power supply is configured such

that the total output power (current x voltage output)

exceeds the rated power output, the effective output

is limited to the operation area of the unit.

The series has adjustable slew rates for the level

transition of both current and voltage.

Wind power supplyAn intelligent, energy-saving power

supply especially for use in wind

energy equipment is now available.

The semi-potted device with an

efficiency rating of 93% is designed

for high shock and vibration loads

and a long service life of nearly

20 years with a MTBF of 800,000 h.

A key feature is that this is said

to be the first power supply that can

be connected directly to the generator voltage without need for

an intermediate transformer. Optical indicators display the status

and condition of the unit. Since it tracks dynamic loads, it can

be operated continuously even under high load conditions. This

makes reserves of from 30 to 50% no longer needed.

Special sensors in combination with a microcontroller continu-

ously monitor wear factors in the supply such as temperature,

overload, faults and other conditions. Intelligent evaluation of

these parameters then gives the user an overview of the status

of the unit for implementing maintenance.

Coloured LEDs in traffic light colours provide the user with

continuous information about the current load level, the ‘stress

level’ as well as the lifetime, a forecast of remaining life ex-

pectancy. The indicators are bright enough to be seen from

several metres away.

For the first time ever, says the company, the usual

three-phase transformer used in wind power equipment can

be dispensed with. Its broad input range of 380 - 690 V

allows the switched-mode power supply to be connected directly

to the generator voltage of the turbine.

Power analyserThe WT1800 precision power analyser is

the latest addition to Yokogawa's range

of digital power measuring instruments.

Replacing the WT1600, the WT1800

offers measurement functions that ben-

efit engineers with electrical power and

efficiency measurements in a range of

industries from inverter and drive design

to alternative energy systems.

The analyser can perform up to six

power input measurements, which makes it possible to perform efficiency tests between the input and output of

products such as inverters.

With its high-resolution 8.4″ XGA display, the instrument is simple to set up and can display up to 12 different

pages of measurement items in formats such as numeric, waveforms and trends. A vector display is available for

voltage and current phase analysis.

Many of today’s power conversion circuits use energy-saving switching techniques which can cause highly distorted

voltage or current waveforms with high harmonic content. To measure these waveforms accurately, the WT1800 uses

high-resolution 16-bit analog-digital converters with a digitising rate of 2 MS/s.

It has a power measurement bandwidth from DC and 0.1 Hz to 1 MHz. Basic power measurement accuracy is

0.1% of reading plus 0.05% of range.

For electric motor testing applications, it has an evaluation function that offers, in a single unit, measurements of all

the relevant electrical power parameters along with rotational speed, torque, mechanical power, synchronous speed,

slip, motor efficiency and total system efficiency.

A-phase, B-phase and Z-phase input terminals have been added for advanced motor analysis. These terminals’

signals make it possible to detect the rotational direction of the motor as well as the electrical angle measured using

the Z-phase signal.

A programmable digital filter function enhances the capability to remove unnecessary harmonic components and

noise superimposed on signals, such as from an inverter or variable-speed motor drive. This filter can be set inde-

pendently for each input element, from 100 Hz to 100 kHz in 100 Hz increments. An analog filter is also provided for

300 kHz and 1 MHz filtering on each input element.

Harmonic analysis can be carried out up to the 500th order from a 50 or 60 Hz fundamental frequency.

A dual harmonic measurement function makes it possible to simultaneously measure the harmonic content and

perform harmonic analysis on two different sources, such as the input and output of an inverter, variable-speed motor

drive, lighting ballast, uninterruptible power supply or similar devices.

For photovoltaic power generation applications, a maximum peak power tracking measurement is available to

maximise the harvested power generated by photovoltaic cells.

A power integration function is also available which can be used to measure the amount of power sold or purchased

in grid interconnection applications.

An event trigger function is incorporated to capture only a particular event.

SENSORSbest

Intelligent sensorsXtrinsic Sensing Solutions from Freescale has been

introduced to the inventory of element14.

Sensory technology is currently one of the fastest

growing semiconductor sectors. Research firm Gartner

has predicted that the sales of non-optical sensors will

grow to $6.2 billion by 2014 globally.

The sensor series integrates intelligent sensing capa-

bility and precision to enable engineers to develop multi-

functional, intuitive and ultimately, more intelligent devices.

Professionals in the electronics industry can buy the sensors via multiple

channels with no minimum quantity or value and next-day delivery in most

cities in Asia-Pacific. 24/7 customer service telephone support and 24/5

online technical support are also available at http://au.element14.com for

Australia and http://nz.element14.com for New Zealand.

The sensors feature intelligent contextual sensing that enables the

devices to have decision-making capability. This creates and manages

a diverse portfolio of sensors that provides multiple inputs and extracts

maximum quantity of information from the environment.

These multiple sensor types coordinate their data coherently through

modular integration, which allows the right combination of sensor types,

logic and other building blocks to produce smarter and more relevant

data to solve case needs efficiently.

MMA8450QT, a member of the Freescale family, is a smart, low-

power accelerometer that provides 12-bit data with first in, first out to

accomplish complex gesture recognition and position detection. It has

two programmable interrupt pins that allow the independent monitoring

of the two functions.

In addition, this component’s embedded FIFO buffer enables a more

efficient analysis of gestures and user-programmable algorithms. This

function ensures that no data is lost on a shared I2C bus and enables

system level power savings of up to 96% of the total power consump-

tion savings by allowing the applications processor to sleep while data

is logged.

Wireless position sensorMicromax Sensors & Automation has announced the XYR6000 wireless position

sensor by Honeywell. The device helps improve overall reliability by giving users

the ability to remotely monitor a number of applications ranging from valve posi-

tion to safety shower emergency use.

Based on the Micro Switch CX hazardous area switch, the sensor monitors

positions when used in conjunction with OneWireless systems, sending the signal

from remote or potentially hazardous areas.

Featuring full UL, ATEX, and IEC Ex approvals, it has calibration within 270°

rotation to apply in most linear and/or rotary position sensing applications. Its

analog output provides true position span output in both percentages and degrees.

In addition to eliminating manual monitoring, the sensor’s accuracy improves

safety by identifying linear or rotary valve positions, minimising the risk of unwanted

Sensor familyBanner Engineering has introduced its latest iVu touch screen vision sensor

family, the iVu Plus - adding ethernet connectivity and more advanced inspec-

tion capabilities to the platform. The latest family continues the tradition of

delivering complex inspection capabilities and flexibility in an easy-to-apply

sensor. Ethernet connectivity the sensors to share inspection data directly with

PLCs, PCs or other factory devices and it can store up to 30 inspections,

accommodating rapid product changeover, while a new Sort sensor function

facilitates sorting of up to 10 patterns in a single inspection.

Configuration is accomplished through a menu-driven user interface with

no PC required. The family includes integrated touch screen TG and BCR

(bar code reader) models, as well as remote versions of both.

Integrated sensors allow users to set up and modify an inspection on

site, while remote versions pair a remote touch-screen display with one or

more separate sensors - facilitating inspection set-up and monitoring for

difficult-to-access areas.

Equipped with three discrete communication channels over ethernet or

serial interfaces and a faster processor, both the iVu Plus TG and iVu Plus

BCR models can export data, such as inspection and image results, to

HMIs and PCs at a much greater speed.

Sensors feature a command channel and data export channels to support

remote control and results, as well as an image export channel to export

image data. A 2.7″ colour, built-in LCD display is standard on integrated

models, while the remote versions feature a 3.5″ display.

The iVu Plus TG can be configured to operate as one of four different

sensor types to tackle diverse inspections. These types include area, which

verifies the presence of a feature or features of interest; blemish, which

identifies flaws on a part, such as scratches on a disc; match, which verifies

that a pattern, shape or part in any orientation matches a reference pattern;

sort, the newest sensor type, which recognises and sorts different patterns

of parts, such as nuts, bolts and washers.

Rotary inductive sensors

Turck has introduced

rotary inductive sen-

sors, a range of induc-

tive analog sensors

that provides 360°

angular measurement.

The sensors use

resistance inductive

capacitance measuring, rather than a traditional mag-

netic positioning element - delivering immunity to EMC

interference.

The sensors are IP67 rated, with a temperature range

of -40 to 70°C, making them suitable for measuring the

angle of solar panels, wind turbine blade position, crane

position and other outdoor applications.

The sensor and its positioning element are designed

as separate pieces, allowing the positioning element to

be mounted in a variety of ways - including directly onto

a rotating shaft - without experiencing the wear common

to these types of sensors.

Radar sensorsMicromax Sensors has added a retroreflective model to Banner Engineering’s range

of R-Gage QT50R radar sensors. Now with both adjustable-field and retroreflective

models available, they can solve more diverse and complex vehicle detection ap-

plications - effectively detecting trains, cars, trucks and cargo alike.

Designed with train detection in mind, they use frequency modulated continuous

wave radar to provide detection of moving or stationary objects in areas where

photoelectric, ultrasonic and magnetic sensors fall short.

The sensor emits a well-defined beam of HF from an internal antenna, which pro-

cesses the signal reflected back to the receiving antenna. The sensor is designed to

detect objects within a user-defined distance, ignoring objects and any background

beyond the setpoint. Common applications of the adjustable-field radar sensor

include: detection of vehicles on roads and near intersections; boat detection for

locks and dams; proximity detection for large shipyard cranes and cargo; car counting for parking ramps, gates and drive throughs; subway and

light-rail logistics. The maximum sensing range depends on the size and shape of the target but the standard adjustable-field radar sensor peaks

at 15 m. Customisable sensors are available with ranges up to 40 m and myriad advanced capabilities, including two independent sensing zones,

narrower beam patterns, analog output, velocity/direction, heartbeat for health monitoring and higher-gain antennas for more sensitive detection.

Temperature sensorMaxim has introduced the MAX6581, a ±1°C accurate, 8-chan-

nel temperature sensor. It has seven remote-sensing channels

to monitor ASICs, FPGAs, CPUs and boards with multiple

hot spots.

Each remote channel includes series resistance cancella-

tion and beta compensation for accuracy. Because the device

contains eight channels, but requires only a single I2C address,

it reduces board area.

The sensor replaces up to eight local sensors or seven single-

channel remote sensors and can measure the die temperature of

external ICs that have integrated thermal diodes. The device also

compensates for parasitic series resistance. Additionally, any of the

seven remote channels can be used to measure board temperature

using a discrete diode-connected transistor.

It is specified for an operating temperature range of -40 to +125°C.

LED sensor

Seiko Instruments has released the S-5855A series,

a PWM (pulse width modulation) output temperature

sensor IC for LED lighting designs. The device begins

to decrease the duty ratio of PWM signal output when

the temperature exceeds the specified value.

This change in the duty ratio enables LED light-

ing circuits to avoid temperatures increasing above

design limits.

The sensor is optimised for use in LED lighting

systems for PC laptops, tablets and other devices.

It can also be used with any system requiring tem-

perature control. The device is connected to the DIM

pin of an LED driver IC to control the LED luminance,

enhancing safety protection and boosting efficiency.

It maintains 100% luminescence up to the speci-

fied temperature. Once this is exceeded, the sensor

decreases the PWM output duty ratio gradually along

with an increasing temperature. This enables the LED

luminance to diminish gradually.

Battery testerRising impedance is a recognised indicator of pend-

ing battery failure and using an RE856 as a proactive

trending tool allows technicians to monitor the condi-

tion of battery cells while they remain connected in

a live circuit.

A series of results can be logged, downloaded and

graphed - providing a guard against any likelihood of

failure being attributed to neglect. This ergonomically

designed handheld device is a diagnostic tool that

comes complete with a clamp meter that integrates

to allow further testing and confirmation of current

measurements.

A major advantage of impedance monitoring over

load testing is that batteries are assessed without be-

ing discharged. Results stored in the RE856’s memory

can be read from its display, downloaded to a PC or

issued via an optional printer.

PXI-based digital multimetersAgilent has introduced two digital multimeters

to complement its family of PXI products. The

6.5-digit instruments offer high measurement

speeds within their price range, along with good

accuracy and stability.

The M9182A and M9183A enhanced-per-

formance DMM measure common parameters

such as DCV, DCI, ACV, ACI, two- and four-

wire resistance and temperature. Each offers

VPO oscilloscopesNext-generation virtual persistence oscilloscopes, such as the GDS-3000 series,

display waveforms with various grey scales based on the occurrence frequen-

cies, comparable to the traditional analog oscilloscope display.

The VPO contains three-dimension waveform data, including amplitude, time

and intensity, for each waveform spot, providing more useful signal information

than a normal DSO digital storage oscilloscope.

The VPO high-speed FPGA parallel data processing, compared with conven-

tional microprocessor architecture, enables the signal analysis of rapid events

such as video, jitter, glitch and runt, as well as significantly increased data

processing speed and therefore increased waveform update rate.

Apart from the VPO technology, the series includes other features that will

redefine user expectations. An 8″ screen dwarfs 5.7″ screens found on traditional

DSOs, the high SVGA 800 x 600 resolution exceeds traditional VGA 340 x 240

DSO resolution by several orders of magnitude and the practical SVGA video

output port allows the transfer of DSO screen image to an external projector

or monitor for remote monitoring or big screen observation.

Other features include the four windows split screen, window-navi tool, switch-

ing power measurement and serial data bus measurement such as I2C/SPI/

UART. It also provides two or four analog channels, up to 350 MHz bandwidth,

independent 25 k points record length for each channel, up to 5 GSa/s sampling

rate and 3000/s frame waveform update rate.

The split screen allows each input channel to be operated independently with

respective setting and waveform display. The time base, the vertical sensitivity

and the trigger selections can be carried out by each channel separately, and the

waveform of each input signal can be shown on the individual part of the screen.

Besides Edge trigger, the series also offers various trigger functions, including

video, pulse width, runt, rise time and fall time (specific time length), alternate,

delay by time, delay by event, and hold off.

The serial bus analysis software carries complete analysis tools for triggering

and decoding of commonly used serial bus interfaces, including I2C, SPI and

UART. Without spending time to study serial bus regulation details, the user only

needs to set the trigger condition on GDS-3000 to get the data slots of interest.

The optional power analysis software contains four measurement functions,

including power quality, harmonics, ripple and inrush current.

Mixed domain scopeTektronix has introduced what it claims is the first mixed domain oscilloscope that

delivers the functionality of a scope and a spectrum analyser in a single instrument.

The MDO4000 mixed domain oscilloscope series gives users the ability to capture

time-correlated analog, digital and RF signals for a complete system view.

More than 60% of oscilloscope users also use a spectrum analyser to troubleshoot

embedded system designs with integrated wireless functionality, requiring them to

work in both the time and frequency domain.

The instrument allows users to capture time-correlated analog, digital and RF

signals across four analog, 16 digital and one RF channel.

The RF input frequency range extends to 6 GHz and provides a capture bandwidth

of ≥1 GHz at all centre frequencies, 100 times wider than other spectrum analysers.

Users can see up to four decoded serial and/or parallel buses at one time on the

same display.

Due to this time correlation between domains, engineers can now make accurate

timing measurements to understand delays and latencies between command/control

events in their design and changes in the RF spectrum.

The oscilloscope also allows designers to see the RF spectrum of a signal at any

point in time within a long acquisition to see how the spectrum changes over time

or with device state.

By moving the Spectrum Time throughout the time domain acquisition, designers

can see the RF spectrum for any point in their acquisition while simultaneously seeing

their analog, digital and/or decoded buses at the same point in time.

Similarly, RF time domain traces are used to show how the amplitude, frequency

or phase of the RF input signal changes relative to time. The RF time domain traces

are shown in the same window as the analog, digital and serial/parallel bus decoded

waveforms, providing instant insight into device operation.

In addition to the standard RF power level trigger, an optional module (MDO4TRIG)

allows additional trigger types to use the RF power level as a source, enabling users

to further isolate an RF event of interest.

Users can trigger on a specific pulse width, or look for a timeout event or runt,

or even include the RF input in a logic pattern defined along with the analog and

digital channels.

This ability to trigger on whatever the user is interested in regardless of whether

it’s analog, digital, RF or some combination is a claimed industry first for the series.
