Letter via the Editor Municipal Manager. Something that has always puzzled me is why a Municipal Manager should not have a qualification in business practice. A decent Municipal Manager should be able to look at each Municipal department and see the strengths and weakness’s and streamline all sections to be more cost effective. Presently we have each municipal department being given a budget that they must spend and that budget is increased on an annual basis. Plettenberg Bay Country Club Bowls Section With the shortest day of the year behind us and a beautiful week of fine weather bringing holiday makers and locals much enjoyment, we are beginning a new year in the management of the Bowls Section of the Country Club. Our Annual General Meeting held after bowls on a fine afternoon on 12th July was well attended and this bodes well for support of the new committee through the year ahead. Elected to serve on committee were: Di Faragher Thomas, Renee Isemonger, Erich Nuss, Cecil Peterson, Colleen Shuttleworth, Jenny Stevenson and Roger Wright. Conservation Corner Filters of our Ecosystems A wetland can simply be described as a body of land that is waterlogged permanently or for a significant duration of time during the year. Wetlands are very productive systems which allow for unique species of plants, animals and insects to thrive where others cannot. They provide species-specific habitats to plant and animal life endemic to each wetland. Unfortunately, wetlands have been exploited by humans for many years, have fallen victim to large scale drainage for development and farming and flooding for recreational lakes. By 1993, half the world’s natural wetlands were destroyed. As a result of this, humans have had to spend millions on building filtration systems that mimic what wetlands once did “free of charge”. Today there are many conservation programs and laws that protect wetlands worldwide. Letter via the Editor Theft on Otter Trail On Saturday 16th July2011, a group of 11 Western Province Mountain Club hikers set off on the Otter Hiking Trail. In the early hours of the morning on Day 5 (Wednesday 20 July) we discovered that we had been burgled while we were sleeping in Andre Hut No 2. Three of our bags were removed from the hut and ransacked during the night. Items that were removed included cellphones (Smartphones), sunglasses, gloves, trainpants and a Nikon D90 camera. This was never expected to happen on the World renowned Otter hiking Trail. We were later informed by the South African National Parks (SANParks) rangers that there had been five(5) previous incidents at the same hut. The question begs to why SANParks did not find it necessary to inform hikers of the possibility of theft on the hike. The permit for the hike indicates that a briefing was to take place prior to the commencement of the hike. This never took place. Instead an outdated video of approx 30mins is plays repeatedly in the visitors centre at Storms River Nature Reserve. It later materialised that the person responsible for the briefing had retired and had not been replaced. According to the Law Enforce-ment Division rangers of SANParks, they have continuously communicated the incidents to the Hospitality Division but to no avail. It would seem that the previous robberies at Andre Hut No2 were never reported on.

It has to be said that the Otter Trail was an incredible experience that was marred by this incident. SANParks has to step up their awareness with regards to safety and security of hikers. Warning notices should accompany the permits and maps. Notices can also be posted inside the huts. Credit goes to the SANParks ranger Marco and his team that responded speedily and also organised transport for the hikers from Nature's Valley to collect the vehicles at Storms River. I hope that this will be brought to the attention of fellow hikers and outdoor enthusiast. Birds in the Rain and such things In the old days when we lived in the 'Wild West" - Johannesburg to some - my little dogs used to go to the parlour once a week. That was when we were wealthy. My dogs could hear the dog lady’s car two blocks away and they would disappear. It took us ages to find them; it was never in the same place nor were they together. Aggie, my house assistant, the dog lady and myself had to crawl under everything - and behind everything. Those dogs could make themselves so small you could not even see them behind the loo. Here in Plett we have our dog lady, and although they do not go as often, they too hear her car two blocks away, but this time with sheer joy. They sit stuck to the front door and literally leap into her arms. I feel quite sad sometimes that they love her as much as me. Do not know what her secret is. She does not smell like a dog, nor look like one. She has no hidden bikkies and they do not go to her rear end to smell her either, so what is it? The great news is that our dog lady and her hubby are now with pup themselves and so excited. Wonder how my cherubs will take to the little one and whether the dog lady will smell different so they will growl at her. Woke up on Sunday morning to the pouring rain. Actually woke up quite a few times during the night to pouring rain and myself coughing and snorting like a bull. The point is my peacocks and guinea fowl can make themselves look so utterly sick , with heads hung down and feathers dragging on the ground, but they still stand at my front door loyally waiting for foodies. On Sunday morning I could not go out in that rain so I opened the garage door and fed them inside. Beloved could not believe his cotton picking eyes when he went downstairs later and found the fowl community contentedly sitting around our garage. No sense of humour there, he closed the garage door and some of them nearly got caught under the door in their rush to get out. This morning Beloved had to go to St. Francis Bay and so I had the same scenario as the day


before, only this time he was not here and the fowls had a long dry time eating their breakfast in peace. Suddenly he called and said the sand river bridge was down and he had to turn back. Was that not irritating for him? Then of course I had to go and explain to the 'girls' (I call all birds 'girls') that they had to hurry. Sunday we went to one of the 'A' lunches with all the right people from around the country sitting down to delicious curry oxtail on my friends farm. Talk about going from famine to feast. Just a few months ago all her dams were bone dry and her vines were suffering big time. She also had the bird community poking holes in her grapes to get moisture. Yesterday was a different story, now their dam walls are threatening to give and that will be a big problem. I told her to go and get some sand bags and prop up the dam. She is strong enough and her husband can help too. Because of the mix of people from all over and all of us having been friends for years it was lovely going through old photo albums and re-living the past when we were

a councillor that was removed from the council chamber by the Municipal Manager and what he terms as “so-called Law Enforcement Officers”. In both cases, the councillor referred to is none other than Johan Brummer. And in both cases, he argued that the actions of the police and later the Municipal Manager were illegal. It is interesting that he does not tell when did the law change to make the actions legal. Brummer expects every official of the municipality to co-operate with him. He however does not tell that other than referring to these officials as “so-called Law Enforcement Officers”, he calls them goons. He has also showed them lewd finger gestures. According to Brummer, name calling is accepted when it’s done by him. He also believes that these “so-called Law Enforcement Officers” or “goons” must “enforce the by-laws of which the Council’s Rules of Order is an integral part” only when he directs them to do so. Since around June 2007, newspapers were full of letters and statements from Brummer and the DA bemoaning alleged illegal and wasteful usage of public funds when ANC councillors were provided with security after he, Brummer, instigated physical attack on the councillors and their property. In his letter, Brummer doesn’t provide any shred of evidence that it was necessary for any councillor to be provided with security. And if the appointment was meant to protect “the councillors, officials …..’, which official has been provided with services of the “private security” he has “appointed”? What is the difference between what he has done now and what the administration did in 2007? Despite what he is trying to portray

PRESS STATEMENT BY THE ANC It was interesting to read Johan Brummer’s long but lacking in substance press release in the issue of 14 July 2001. The letter shows clear double speak on his side. It is true that he was arrested and like he said in the letter under reply, he cried foul because he claims that he had immunity from arrest. But he swiftly moves to at least infer that councillor Lulama Mvimbi cannot claim immunity from arrest. Brummer’s condemnation of the police’s alleged lack of action is also hypocritical. He implies that because another councillor was once ‘unlawfully’ arrested by the police while in the council chamber Mvimbi must have also been arrested. That weird argument leads to the real crux of the matter. In his letter, Brummer tells of a councillor that was arrested while in the council chamber. He also tells of

outside of the council chamber, Brummer has taken the position of the Speaker of the council to settle scores. He is abusing his power and the ANC will not sit down and cry. We will do what we have to do within the boundaries of the law. The Constitution is not meant to protect only Brummer and the DA. It is for us all. Just a word of advice to Brummer: People who gather honey don’t kick the beehives. If he needs respect and co-operation from anybody, he must treat others with respect and show willingness to cooperate with others. It will not help him to create unnecessary tensions and rule with threats while at the same time he expects respect from the recipients of his draconian rule. The ANC fully supports multiparty democracy, and will always respect the voice of the people as expressed at the polls. We know that the mass gathering of former apartheid covert operatives as leaders of the DA in Bitou will forever create tensions between those who spent their lives fighting for the creations of a democratic state and those who actively suppressed dissent against the apartheid regime. Unlike what he did in the past as a covert operative and what they are trying to do now, Brummer’s rights as a citizen of this country and an elected councillor will be respected. Likewise all ANC councillors’ right to express themselves will strenuously be defended. That will be done whether Brummer likes it or not. Wittedrift High Outreach 2011 On the 23rd of June 2011, 25 students all with a burning desire to bring about change in Africa, accompanied by three teachers and the Jooste Family, set off for Malawi to preach the good news and adapt to their lifestyle. Words cannot begin to describe this eye opening and out-of-this-world trip to the Heart of Africa. Matthew 28:19”Therefore go and make disciples of all nations.” These words were the essence of this trip. The mission was to go and spread the word of God where it is not mentioned and try bring about the message of hope to our God forsaken continent. Living and being around the people of Africa made us all realise how truly blessed we are back home in South Africa. The people in these parts of Africa are extremely poor yet so content. We as South Africans could learn a lot from our fellow Africans on how to treat each other with respect. Witnessing a very traumatic accident, in which the lives of four adults and a child were claimed, made us realise how precious life is. This made us remember how quickly we can lose our lives and how important it is to live everyday to the full and build a strong relationship with God. Changing us will be an understatement in describing the outcomes of this trip, it has renewed us. We would like to thank Oom Lourens Jooste, his family and Gateway to Africa ministries for making such an amazing opportunity possible. Wetlands are very productive systems which allow for unique species of plants, animals and insects to thrive where others cannot. They provide species-specific habitats to plant and animal life endemic to each wetland. Unfortunately, wetlands have been exploited by humans for many years, have fallen victim to large scale drainage for development and farming and flooding for recreational lakes. By 1993, half the world’s natural wetlands were destroyed. As a result of this, humans have had to spend millions on building filtration systems that mimic what wetlands once did “free of charge”. Today there are many conservation programs and laws that protect wetlands worldwide. Mandela Day Celebration in Plettenberg Bay The Nelson Mandela International Day (or Mandela Day) on July 18 is marked as an international day to honour Madiba’s legacy by engaging in selfless acts of service. According to www.mandeladay.com: “The Mandela Day campaign message is simple: Mr. Mandela gave 67 years of his life fighting for the rights of humanity.” All that everyone has to do is to give 67 minutes of their time, whether it’s supporting their chosen charity or serving their local community. A celebration to mark the day in Plettenberg Bay was held at Madiba’s Trees in Mandela Park on Monday, the 18th July 2011. The purpose of the celebration was to honor Mr. Mandela on his birthday and to also remember his dedication towards the creation of a rainbow nation, and especially the values he has taught us. Some of these values were printed and tied to trees. Mama G, the project founder, organized the event. The celebration was embraced by the presence of Bitou Local Councillors, a choir from Phakamisani Primary School as well as the community members. The patron of the project, Cllr Mama Monica Seyisi said she was very excited because the Mandela Day celebration was hosted at Mandela Park as it the legacy which Tata will leave behind for future generations. She also encouraged the community to give their 67 minutes of their time every day to serve their respective communities. Councilor Charles Dreyer welcomed the guests saying how honoured he was that our community was celebrating the birthday of Tata Madiba at the park where they planted 90 trees in 2008.
