Eric Bainbridge: Collages4 May — 21 July 2012Floor 1

This exhibition consists of small scale collages realised from images culled and cut from fashion magazines. The artist recomposes these colours, forms and found images, creating an effect that is both hilarious and charming.

Transmitter/Receiver: The Persistence of CollageAn Arts Council Collection touring exhibition

4 May — 30 June 2012Floor 3

Collage is perhaps the default medium of the 21st century: it is common place now to sample, appropriate and mix material from across a vast range of media. New technology has made it easy to assemble and customise images, sound and text, and for instant publishing via the internet.

Transmitter/Receiver traces some of the uses of collage in British art from the first influences of the Parisian avant-garde in the work of Ben Nicholson, Eileen Agar and Roland Penrose through to the varied ways in which it is employed by contemporary artists such as Idris Khan and David Noonan.

Artists include: Eileen Agar, David Batchelor, Ian Breakwell, Patrick Caulfield, Marc Camille Chaimowicz, Steven Claydon, Michael Craig-Martin, Kate Davis, The Hackney Flashers, Richard Hamilton, Margaret Harrison, Susan Hiller, Idris Khan, Laurence Kavanagh, Peter Kennard, Linder, Camilla Low, David Mach, Ben Nicholson, David Noonan, Chris Ofili, Eduardo Paolozzi, Roland Penrose, Grayson Perry, Jo Spence, John Stezaker, Stephen Sutcliffe, Tony Swain, Mark Titchner, Armando Andrade Tudela and Martin Westwood.

Mark PowerBlack Country Stories

20 July — 15 September 2012Floor 3, Gallery 1

Mark Power was commissioned by Multistory to create a series of urban landscapes responding to his experience of the Black Country – an area hit particularly hard by the economic recession. For many years, Mark’s work has sought to reveal the splendour of the everyday and there is a quiet yet simmering beauty in his photographic observations. During his visits to the region, Mark noticed an array of thriving beauty salons and gentlemen's clubs peppering local shopping arcades. Investigating this further, he discovered a number of historical precedents for the success of beauty and sex industries in times of austerity. This led to a series of short films made in beauty salons, tattoo parlours and nightclubs.

A further series of photographs shows elegant footwear seen from pavement level against a backdrop of grey concrete and crumbling brick, while a sound installation turns the names used to describe the colours of make-up and tattooist’s dyes into a romantic poem. All this serves to complement the apparent bleakness of the landscapes depicted in the large format photographs.

Collectively, the exhibition seeks to ask questions about perceptions of beauty and the importance of looking good in spite of it all.

Street

20 July — 15 September 2012Floor 3, Galleries 2, 3 & 4

A street can be where we live, where we work or where we shop. It can be a focus for bustling activity and a celebration of diversity. It can also be a site for conflict, anxiety, loneliness, alienation and economic gloom. This exhibition brings together artists who explore the darker side of the urban environment as well as those who celebrate its potency as a glimpse of modern life. Many of the works have been acquired for the region’s collections with the support of Art Fund International. Artists include Mohamed Bourouissa, Nathan Coley, Barry McGee, Miao Xiaochun, Nicolas Provost, Dayanita Singh, Gavin Turk and Zhang Enli.

The Garman Ryan Collection

On display all year round

The Garman Ryan Collection is a personal collection of art and artefacts given to Walsall by Sir Jacob Epstein’s widow, Kathleen Garman, and her close friend, the sculptor Sally Ryan. This intimate display includes works by famous artists including Van Gogh, Lucian Freud, Monet, Constable and Picasso.

A new education resource is now available ‘Adventures in The Archives’ which enables children and adults to explore the Epstein-Garman family relationships behind the portraits in the collection. The resource can also be downloaded on line atwww.thenewartgallerywalsall.org.uk/learning/adventuresinthearchives

As a young artist in the early 30’s Isabel Rawsthorne was studio assistant to Jacob Epstein and in the 1930’s and 40’s Alberto Giacometti, was her closest artistic and romantic relationship. Her drawings in this exhibition have a connection to his famously skeletal sculptures. Rawsthorne's friendship with Francis Bacon in the 50’s and 60’s culminated in an exhibition of her dancers at his Gallery, the Marlborough. For nearly twenty years, she drew and painted her friends the prima ballerinas Margot Fonteyn, Antoinette Sibley and Rudolph Nureyev in the rehearsal rooms at Covent Garden. Her works are as much portraits as they are an exploration of dance and movement. These are now nostalgic names in the history of dance, but for artists of Isabel’s generation, the inheritors of the age of Serge Diaghilev and the Ballet Russes, dance was the cutting edge of the avant-garde, a potent synthesis of new music, art and physical expression. Both Rawsthorne and Fonteyn were both independent and experimental in their field and they shared a lover in Constant Lambert, Artistic Director at Covent Garden. Bob and Roberta Smith’s Epstein Archive Gallery

Bob and Roberta Smith’s Epstein Archive was created after a 2 year residency with contemporary artists Bob and Roberta Smith. Working in collaboration with Archive Curator Neil Lebeter, they rifled through the letters, photographs and documents held in the Epstein Archive, creating new works and short films in response to what was found. Displaying contemporary art and archives side by side, Bob and Roberta Smith’s Epstein Archive Gallery showcases the extraordinary and tragic story of the Epstein-Garman family. The book of the project, How To Let An Artist Rifle Through Your Archives, is to be published in the summer.
