“You can get plenty of outcross

(stallions) but you have got to get ones that work as well and he’s by

probably the hottest stallion going around at the moment - Written

Tycoon’s having a hell of a run,” Orton told ANZ Bloodstock News.

“These days, you can put a value on a horse when they win certain

races and get to a certain standard, but when you get an outcross horse

such as himself, with such a good, strong female pedigree, there’s a kicker

    that goes on top.”

The owners of Ole Kirk, who won the Talindert Stakes (Listed, 1100m)

at his first start in February before running third in the VRC Sires’ Produce

Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m), fourth in the ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes (Gr 1,

1400m) and third in the ATC Champagne Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m), held off

selling him to a stud until after he had claimed both the Golden Rose and

    Caulfield Guineas.

The colt was immediately spelled after his October 10 Guineas victory

and he underwent a final veterinary check yesterday afternoon before the

    deal was officially signed off.

The John, Michael and Wayne Hawkes-trained Ole Kirk, a $675,000

Inglis Premier Yearling Sale graduate, was raced by a syndicate headed by

Vinery shareholder Neil Werrett, who also part-owns Black Caviar, as well

as the colt’s breeder Rick Jamieson.

Despite prominent owner Werrett’s affiliation with Vinery, Orton said

the stud was not handed any favours during negotiations to secure Ole

    Kirk.

He said: “It wasn’t that simple at all, and understandably, too. Neil was

representing a group of other owners and he had to have discipline to it

and a number of farms went through a process (to try and buy Ole Kirk).”

Any international campaign, Orton says, would need to be ticked off by

Ole Kirk’s trainers, but if he did head to the northern hemisphere it would

likely be for a race like the Diamond Jubilee Stakes (Gr 1, 6f) at Royal Ascot

next June, a race previously won by Australian-bred sprinters Black Caviar

(2012), Merchant Navy (Fastnet Rock (2018), Starspangledbanner (Choisir)

(2010) and Choisir (Danehill Dancer) (2003).

    BY STEVE MORAN

    Flemington trainer Mike Moroney is

    understandably enthusiastic about

    the prospect of training Epsom

    Derby (Gr 1, 1m 4f) fifth English

King (Camelot) - the highest priced colt ever

sold at the Tattersalls Autumn Horses In

Training Sale and “by quite a way”, according

to Moroney, the most expensive horse his team

    has ever purchased.

The Wednesday sale, at Newmarket for

    925,000 guineas (approx. AUD$1.792 million),

comes on the eve of a crucial Victoria Derby

Day for the stable which hopes to qualify Sound

(Lando) for the Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) -

via the Lexus Hotham Handicap (Gr 3, 2500m)

    - and has Buffalo River (Noble Mission),

purchased from the same Tatts sale in 2018,

among the leading hopes in the Cantala Stakes

    (Gr 1, 1600m).

Moroney said that English King will carry

the purple and white colours of long time stable

client Gerard Peterson who, with Rod Duke, are

the majority owners of Sound. Peterson, also a

    part-owner of Moroney’s 2000 Melbourne Cup

winner Brew (Sir Tristram), and Duke were key

players in the acquisition of English King.

“I was talking to Gerard (Peterson) before

this week’s sale and he told me that he and

Rod (Duke) could get half done. Rupert Legh

and other good clients expressed their interest

and so the majority of the horse was sold in

advance. Mind you, we had a budget and our

last bid was it,” Moroney said.

English King, the Lingfield Derby Trial

(Listed 1m 3.5f) winner in record time before

finishing less than a length behind runner-

up Khalifa Sat (Free Eagle) at Epsom, was a

wildcard entry into the sale, which galvanised

the interest of the buying team - Armando

Duarte, Ballymore Stables and Paul Moroney

    Bloodstock.

“A lot of people had tried to buy this horse

privately without success but when he was

added to this sale we really did our homework

and we’re excited to get him. He’s lightly-raced

and there’s improvement to come we believe.

“We’ve paid a record price in a year where

the average was down but not many horses like

him go through this sale. And I think he should

have run second in the Derby,” said Moroney,

who just happened to be watching replays of

the race when contacted by ANZ Bloodstock

    News.

    "English King's track-record performance

winning the Lingfield Derby Trial beating St

Leger runner-up Berkshire Rocco was one of the

    most breathtakingly dominant performances

anywhere this year,” Moroney’s brother Paul

    told the Racing Post.

"He's clearly a highly talented colt with

loads of quality and we're thrilled to have

secured him. Through their joint sire Camelot

and with similar race records at the same stage,

English King maps the same as last weekend’s

Cox Plate winner Sir Dragonet,” he said.

English King is the 12th foal from Platonic

(Zafonic), the foundation mare for famed

Normandy nursery Ecurie des Monceaux. She

was bought for 100,000 guineas at Tattersalls in

    2004.

Her seven winners include Prix de Lutece

(Gr 3, 3000m) victor Pacifique (Montjeu), dam

of record-setting €2.6 million Arqana yearling

Parabellum (Dubawi) and the Listed winner

    Prudenzia (Dansili), whose brood includes

Magic Wand (Galileo), last year’s Mackinnon

Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) winner who was retired

    yesterday, and her Classic-winning three-parts

sister Chicquita (Montjeu), who was the most

expensive thoroughbred sold in Ireland when

bought by Peter and Ross Doyle on behalf of

    Coolmore for €6m in 2013.

English King is expected to arrive in Australia

in December and will be accompanied by two

other stable purchases - Emissary (Kingman),

    a half-brother to 2010 Derby and Arc (Gr 1,

2400m) winner Workforce (King’s Best), for

    350,000 guineas (approx. AUD$677,400) and

Keats (Galileo) for 200,000 guineas (approx.

    AUD$387,000).

“The other two horses also look very

promising types. Emissary, who’ll race in

Rupert Legh’s colours, failed in the Derby but

his form is otherwise very good and Keats just

looks a nice horse. He’s had a bit more racing

than the other two but he could be the ideal

“miler” to 2000 metres horse here,” he said.

Keats is a last start Irish Listed winner

whose dam Airwave (Air Express) was a

Cheveley Park Stakes (Gr 1, 6f) winner at two

and she was runner-up to Australia’s Choisir

(Danehill Dancer) in the 2003 Golden Jubilee

Stakes (Gr 1, 6f). She’s produced four winners

with a Racing Post Rating above 100.

    The stable’s record with northern

hemisphere acquisitions augurs well for the

latest trio. Most have been private purchases

including this year’s Mornington Cup (Listed,

2400m) winner Aktau (Teofilo), Sound and

    past high-class performers Glass Harmonium

    (Verglas) and Vengeur Masque (Monsun).

“We’ve done pretty well with the tried

purchases. Horses like Glass Harmonium and

Vengeur Masque won around $1.3, $1.4 million

for us. We’re well practised now, we know what

to expect and we’ve also had success with

yearlings which Paul (Moroney) has bought

    including Mirimar and Hang Man.

“It’s always a case of assessing them on arrival.

Some will come through quickly while others will

take time to acclimatise,” Moroney said.

And this weekend, a $900,000 Kennedy

Canala Stakes prize potentially awaits Buffalo

River who was originally trained by John

Gosden but joined the Moroney team after

being knocked down to brother Paul for 180,000

    guineas in 2018.

“I think he’s improved a lot from his run in the

Toorak although I can’t figure out the weights as

he meets the winner one kilogram worse for being

beaten two lengths,” Moroney said in reference to

his second placing behind Mr Quickie (Shamus

Award) in the Caulfield Group 1.

Buffalo River’s five wins in Australia have

been on soft ground but the prospect of a good

track tomorrow does not perturb the trainer.

“Most of his runs here have been on the soft but

it was good ground in the Toorak and I think

he’s actually suited at a mile (1600m) on top of

the ground given his really good cruising speed.

“He can keep running those good sectionals

on good ground. That’s not a worry. He’s drawn

out a bit but again I’d rather he was drawn in the

middle than right in because he can be a touch

slow, sometimes, to muster speed,” Moroney

    said.

Brew, in 2000, had to win the then Saab

Quality (Lexus Hotham) to ensure his place in

the Melbourne Cup field and this year there’s

a strong sense of de javu with the same quest

    awaiting Sound.

“It’s Brew all over again. We’ve got to run.

It’s a bit of a shame as he had no luck at all in

last week’s Moonee Valley Cup but that’s how

it is,” Moroney said of his stayer who is 32nd in

order of entry for Tuesday’s great race.

In contrast, Moroney will roll the dice with

stablemate Chapada (Bullet Train) who is two

places further down the order. “It just wouldn’t

suit his preparation to run so we’ll rely on

attrition. If he makes the field he’ll definitely

run but, if not, he’ll run in the Queen Elizabeth

on the last day…and he’s got years ahead of

    him,” Moroney said.

Moroney will also run Tour Of Duty

    (Hinchinbrook) and Wisaka (Tavistock) in

    tomorrow’s Victoria Derby (Gr 1, 2500m) -

bidding for a third win in the race after victories

with Second Coming (Oak Ridge) and Monaco

    Consul (High Chaparral).

Snowdens ready to rule in CoolmoreRoman Consul Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) winner

Wild Ruler (Snitzel) will face his biggest career

challenge to date when taking on a top-class

field in the Coolmore Stud Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m)

    at Flemington tomorrow. The three-year-old

colt had a tendency to over-race as a juvenile

but the Snowden team believe he is now more

mature, evidenced by his unbeaten start to this

preparation. "He is just starting to race better

now and he's giving himself a better chance to

run to his ability," Peter Snowden, who trains in

partnership with his son Paul, said. "He's helped

himself because he is relaxing better." Wild Ruler

is towards the head of the Coolmore market and

has the outside barrier in tomorrow's 14-runner

field, a gate Snowden regards as ideal down the

straight course. "Of all the straight races I've been

in before and seen, I think you're better off drawn

wide than they are inside. I'm happy with the

draw," the co-trainer continued. "The Group 1s

are hard no matter what they are so he will need

to be at his best. It will be a competitive race so

he'll need to do everything right."

Farnan ready for Flemington testAdrian Bott is confident Golden Slipper (Gr 1,

1200m) winner Farnan (Not A Single Doubt) can

bounce back to form in the Coolmore Stud Stakes.

The three-year-old has only appeared once on a

race day this season, finishing fifth of seven in last

month’s Run To The Rose (Gr 2, 1200m) before

skipping The Everest (1200m), but Bott believes

he is ready to fire on all cylinders at Flemington.

“We certainly could have taken our place in The

Everest. He was fit and well enough,” Bott, who

trains in partnership with Gai Waterhouse, told

Racing.com. “It’s a little bit difficult going in not

having the major lead-ups that you want. Missing

a big lead-up such as the Golden Rose could have

left him that run short or a little bit vulnerable

there. That’s the reason we have come down here

and stuck with a traditional path for the three-

year-olds. If we can win a race like this it adds

tremendously to his value. It gave us that extra

fortnight to get him a little bit fitter through the

hit-out at Gosford and down the straight here.”

Trinder fears ‘next Mystic Journey’ in Empire RoseAdam Trinder is concerned with the prospect of

facing Odeum (Written Tycoon) in the Empire

Rose Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) tomorrow and has

issued high praise to the filly who he believes

is a younger version of his star mare Mystic

Journey (Needs Further). Despite Mystic Journey

returning to form when taking out the Stocks

Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m) on her last appearance,

Trindler is nervous about giving eight kilograms

to Odeum at Flemington. "I keep looking at

    Odeum's form as a three-year-old filly and it's

almost the same as Mystic Journey's was two years

ago," Trinder said. "Both horses finished fifth in

the Atlantic Jewel and then won the Jim Moloney

Stakes. We then went and won the Moonee Valley

Classic and Odeum won the Thousand Guineas.

I think it would have been a scary proposition to

take on Mystic Journey two years ago with only

49 kilograms and now we've got to give eight

    concerns me."

Gytrash chases Everest consolationGordon Richards is hoping Gytrash (Lope De

Vega) can cap off a great month by landing the

Yes Yes Yes Stakes (1300m) at Rosehill tomorrow.

Gytrash finished third in The Everest almost two

weeks ago, a performance Richards was delighted

with, and will now be aiming to win the $750,000

bonus available to any horse who contests The

Everest or Sydney Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) and wins

the Yes Yes Yes. "Considering it (The Everest) was

the race we'd set him for, to actually get in it was

a big thing, and we will remember it forever,"

Richards said. "He did us proud, he was fantastic.

He could have run again three days later he was

that good, so we had no hesitation going for the

Yes Yes Yes with him.” With rain pouring down in

Sydney this week, conditions are expected to be

tough but Richards is not concerned. "It (distance)

holds no fear for me, but sometimes a heavy track

can make it a tougher run, or make it seem like a

longer race. It's a rich race and there is an extra

bonus if he wins it, so we'll be out there trying."

Parker takes to Cup with live chanceKembla Grange trainer Kerry Parker is excited

to run Craven Plate (Gr 3, 2000m) winner Think

It Over (So You Think) in the Rosehill Gold Cup

(2000m) tomorrow, but is wary of the handicap

mark given to the five-year-old gelding. "He's

progressed along nicely from that last start

win," Parker said. "They didn't miss him in his

benchmark points of course, he went up a fair

way. He goes into the Cup here on Saturday with

an ordinary barrier (gate 13) and the 59 kilograms

but he probably deserved that after winning a

weight-for-age race last start." Parker believes

the conditions shouldn't be a factor for Think It

Over, as long as it doesn't become too much of a

quagmire. "His form in the wet hasn't worried me

before, I think he gets through it OK," Parker said.

“But you wouldn't want a horrible heavy ten with

    that weight."

Oceanex under Cup cloudMelbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) hope Oceanex

(Ocean Park) will be inspected by vets for the

second time today after connections were

unhappy with her action yesterday. The mare will

have her shoes changed ahead of the re-inspection

with the hope that will prove beneficial. “We had

a 7.15am trot up with Dr Grace Frobes, RV vet this

morning, and Oceanex is not 100 per cent in the

action. We think it’s a little bit foot related,” Mick

Price, who trains in partnership with Michael

Kent Jnr, told RSN. “We trotted her up with Dave

Shepherd, who has been Oceanex’s vet since she

was a yearling, and we both agree she’s not 100

per cent in the action. We are going to change

the shoes on her and there is another inspection

that will happen at lunchtime tomorrow (Friday).

Conformationally she’s a little bit flat footed and

gets a little bit low in the heel. But she has never

had a day of unsoundness in her life. I think it’s

just got to the point where four, five days out from

the Melbourne Cup, it’s reared its ugly head.”

Further Cup doubtsFellow Cup contenders Warning (Declaration

Of War) and Chapada (Bullet Train) are also set

to be looked over again today by Racing Victoria

vets before being given the go ahead to line up

on Tuesday. RV confirmed that Warning was

showing signs of lameness in the left front, with

the stable reporting a foot issue, while Chapada

presented with lameness in his front right.

Zebrowski out of Melbourne CupZebrowski (Savabeel), who finished fifth in

    Wednesday’s Bendigo Cup (Gr 3, 2400m) will

not accept for this year’s Melbourne Cup,

    connections have confirmed. The four-year-

old, who has finished runner-up three times

in Group company, was 25th in the order of

entry before the Bendigo Cup and his omission

means San Huberto (Speightstown) will take

his place in the order. There is still one free entry

ticket to the Melbourne Cup up for grabs with

the winner of tomorrow's Hotham Handicap

    (Gr 3, 2500m) assured of a spot.

Victorian parliament airs slaughter allegationsVictorian parliament has heard allegations

that a number of unwanted thoroughbred

racehorses have been sent for slaughter

in NSW, despite rules being introduced in

2017 to prevent the procedure happening.

Broombee Stud owner Gerry Harvey, who

has since issued an apology regarding the

matter, was one of the people accused of being

involved with sending thoroughbreds to NSW

food factories. Slaughtering racehorses is not

illegal in Australia, but it is against the rules

of Racing NSW, which stipulate that retired

racehorses must be rehomed, not sent for

slaughter. Breaching the rules can lead to fines,

    suspensions and disqualifications.

Racing NSW launches investigationRacing NSW have launched an investigation

into the alleged slaughtering of unwanted

    thoroughbred racehorses, after The Sydney

Morning Herald and The Age handed evidence

    to Racing NSW featuring hidden-camera

footage, invoices and log books from two

knackeries in northern NSW. "If Racing NSW's

investigations establish that any of those horses

remained in the ownership of persons under

[its] jurisdiction, Racing NSW will prosecute

those persons for any breaches of its rules,"

NSW Racing's general manager of integrity,

Marc van Gestel, told the Sydney Morning

Herald. "To further address this issue, Racing

NSW is also lobbying the NSW government

to make it a criminal offence in NSW for any

thoroughbred horse to be sent to a knackery,

even if they have been rehomed to persons

    outside of racing."

Magic Wand retiredGroup 1-winning globetrotter Magic Wand

(Galileo) has been retired after a foot abscess

ruled her out of running at the spring carnival

in Melbourne. Winner of the Mackinnon Stakes

(Gr 1, 2000m) last year, Magic Wand was a late

withdrawal from the Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m)

last weekend and attempts to drain the abscess

have proven unsuccessful since. TJ Comerford,

travelling foreman for trainer Aidan O’Brien,

told racing.com: "She got a foot abscess and it's

one of those we can't get at. We're trying to draw

it out but it doesn't seem to want to release and

we think it’s going to burst out of the coronary

band. It's just bad luck. She's going to be retired

and go to stud. She's a very good filly. She's

been everywhere and has always been a very

good mare.” A €1.4 million yearling purchase

by the Coolmore partners, Magic Wand was

a regular in major international races having

contested prizes in America, Australia, France,

Hong Kong and Saudi Arabia as well as in

    Britain and Ireland.

Sky’s the limit for Manning’s matingPortland Sky’s (Deep Field) breeders had

cause to celebrate on the weekend when the

    three-year-old impressively landed the Red

Anchor Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m). The Matt Laurie-

trained colt was having just his fourth start and

connections were very impressed with what

they saw. "He is a lovely colt," Laurie said.

"He got pestered in this tough going which I

don't think he actually handled - it was a good

performance. From day dot we felt like he was

a quality horse. He has continued to improve

and I think he will keep doing that. I think we've

got a really nice horse." Portland Sky's breeders

    - Robert and Ann Anderson of Anita Vale Stud

    - and pedigree analyst Kristen Manning, who

planned the mating, were thrilled. "Having

already advised on the pedigrees of feature race

Caulfield Cup and Melbourne Cup carnival

winners in the past, it is a big thrill to add a

W.S Cox Plate day Group winner to the list,"

    Manning said.

Stanaway chargedTrainer Bryce Stanaway will face the Victorian

Racing Tribunal having been charged with

seven offences following alleged incidents that

took place earlier in the month. The charges are

in relation to events surrounding Moorabool’s

(Seventh Reason) run at Bendigo on October

17, where the seven-year-old was eased out of

the race in the home straight before the jockey

dismounted and a barrier attendant and vet

attended to the horse. The various charges also

refer to a further visit that stewards and a RV

veternation paid to his stable on October 20,

where Stanaway is alleged to have refused them

access to inspect the horse. A date for Stanaway

to stand before the Victorian Racing Tribunal is

    yet to be fixed.

    NEW ZEALAND

Rich Hill ready for big weekendA trio of Rich Hill Stud graduates will be

vying for top honours in prestige events

in Australia over the coming days. Riodini

(Proisir) will contest the $7.5 million Golden

    Eagle (1500m), Albarado (Savabeel) the

Victoria Derby (Gr 1, 2500m) and Surprise

Baby (Shocking) the Melbourne Cup (Gr 1,

3200m). Riodini looks to have strong claims

following his third-placed finish in the Epsom

Handicap (Gr 1, 1600m) last time out. “He’s

from Proisir’s first crop and was bred by Alan

Galbraith, who remains in the ownership, and

    he’s a share-holder in Rich Hill so it’s exciting

for all concerned,” Rich Hill’s John Thompson

said. Albarado arrives at the Victoria Derby

following victory in the Caulfield Classic (Gr 3,

2000m) on his last appearance, while Surprise

Baby will be tackling the Melbourne Cup for

the second time after finishing fifth and the

race last year. Connections are hopeful of an

improved showing on Tuesday from the son of

Shocking (Street Cry). “We had a great result

in the Cup with the Rich Hill-bred Prince Of

Penzance winning in 2015 so we’re looking

forward to Surprise Baby running on Tuesday

and, hopefully, a top result for Shocking,”

    Thompson said.

Not An Option out of GuineasNot An Option (Not A Single Doubt) has been

ruled out of the New Zealand 2000 Guineas (Gr

1, 1600m) after a bone chip was found in one of

his fetlocks yesterday morning. The three-year-

old suffered a heart fibrillation when finishing

last in the James and Annie Sarten Memorial

Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) on Saturday, but had

recovered well from that issue. “Unfortunately

this morning, apart from his heart fibrillation

on Saturday, we found a small chip in one of

his fetlocks,” trainer Tony Pike said yesterday.

“It is only very minor but it is going to have

to come out. Unfortunately that rules him

out of the Guineas and he will come back for

a late Autumn campaign in either Sydney or

Brisbane. Those heart fibrillations do happen,

but I was quite confident the way he pulled

up on the Sunday but with this (bone chip)

rearing its head we are going to have to look

after him and take that out and start again.”

London Banker primed for CupThe Roger James and Robert Wellwood-trained

London Banker (Tavistock) is primed for the

Ricoh Feilding Gold Cup (Listed, 2100m) at

    Awapuni tomorrow. The five-year-old, who

heads the early market for the race, won three

races on the bounce over 2100 metres to finish

off his last campaign but is yet to win so far this

preparation. “He gets in at a nice weight (53

kilograms), albeit it’s not quite a true handicap,”

Wellwood said. “We are looking forward to

seeing him up over ground in time. He won

three in a row over 2100 metres last preparation

so I would say that is his pet distance. We are

just expecting a nice solid run, but he is going

to keep improving over the spring and the

summer into those Cup races. I thought it was

a really good run at Hawke’s Bay last start (over

1600m). He sprinted and looked like he was

going to go past them, but the mile was just a

bit sharp for him. It improved him fitness wise

and he should be pretty spot on stepping up

    over ground.”

Princess Rihanna ready for Pukekohe returnPrincess RIhanna (Showcasing) will resume in

the Roger Gill Mitsubishi Handicap (1200m)

    tomorrow, with training partners Lance

O’Sullivan and Andrew Scott hopeful of a big

run from the four-time winner. “She is going

to be competitive. She has done very well and

looks good,” O’Sullivan said. “The key is that

she gets out there, gets her breathing right and

doesn’t panic, which she can the odd time, then

she should be in the finish. We are hoping there

is a stakes race in her. This is going to give us

some indication as to whether she is going to

measure up and that’s where we are at.”

Back to the well for SampsonThe 11-year-old Sampson (Dubai Destination)

continues to impress trainer Howie Mathews

after taking out the Egmont Cup (2100m) at

Hawera earlier this month. Mathews admitted

he was surprised by that win, but believes the

veteran is on song ahead of the Ricoh Feilding

Gold Cup. “It was a great ride,” he said. “It is

very hard to put it into the jockey’s head how

you would like the horse ridden, but it was

amazing to see Chad (Ormsby) let him lob

along like that. He had a couple of winter runs

which fitted him up really well. He has always

been a clean-winded old bugger. It was a wee

bit of a surprise, but a wonderful surprise that

he was right up to that.”

    ASIA

SIN: Lim's Cruiser to head to TasmaniaTwo-time Singapore champion sprinter Lim’s

Cruiser (Casino Prince) has farewelled Kranji

after connections decided to send him to

Tasmania with a possibility of an eventual

return to the racetracks in Australia. The eight-

year-old has entered quarantine and is booked

to fly out to the Apple Isle via Melbourne in

around two weeks’ time. Lim’s Cruiser last

raced in England last year where in two starts

in Group 1 sprints he ran out of the placings,

but was far from disgraced. “We spoke to

Stephen Maskiell in Tasmania, and he and his

wife Yasmin agreed to look after him,” trainer

Stephen Gray said. “He will work on the beach

there, they have better tracks there than the

Polytrack. If he does stand up, then we’ll race

    him in Melbourne.”

(Acclamation) sired his 67th individual stakes

winner when his daughter Indie Angel (3 f ex

Indigo Lady by Sir Percy) defied her odds to

take out the Fleur De Lys Stakes (Listed, 1m)

on the Lingfield Polytrack. The John Gosden-

    trained three-year-old returned a 12-1 chance

as she registered the fourth win of her 11-start

career. Lavender’s Blue (Sea The Stars) finished

a length and a quarter behind the winner in

    second spot, with Ummalnar (Shamardal)

another neck away in third. It was announced

yesterday that Dark Angel would stand for a

reduced fee of €60,000 (approx. AUD$100,000)

    in 2021.

Anice Stellato by Dalakhani) notched her third

successive victory when landing a competitive

renewal of the Riven Eden Stakes (Listed, 1m 5f)

at Lingfield yesterday. Stepping up in grade after

back-to-back handicap wins, the Sir Michael

    Stoute-trained three-year-old beat Aidan O’Brien’s

raider Elizabethofaragon (Galileo) by a length and

three quarters. Domino Darling (Golden Horn)

was just a nose away in third. The fourth foal out

IRE: Equiano to relocate to National StudEquiano (Acclamation), sire of star sprinters

The Tin Man and Dakota Gold, is heading

from Newsells Park to the Irish National Stud

to continue his stud career, it was announced

yesterday. The son of Acclamation (Royal

Applause) has sired 12 individual Group winners

to date, including the three-time Group 1 winner

The Tin Man and Breeders' Cup Sprint (Gr 1, 5f)

scorer Belvoir Bay. He is also responsible for the

high-class Equilateral, a Listed winner and second

to Battaash (Dark Angel) in this year's King's

Stand Stakes (Gr 1, 5f), plus last year's Group 3

victor Gustavus Weston. Cathal Beale, CEO of the

Irish National Stud, said: "We're delighted to offer

Equiano to the Irish market at a time when solid,

proven speed influences are ever more valued by

breeders.” Equiano's stud fee and terms will be set

    at a later date.

IRE: Yeomanstown announce reduced feesYeomanstown Stud became the latest

operation to release its fees for 2021, with

leading sire Dark Angel topping the four-strong

roster at a reduced fee of €60,000 (approx.

AUD$100,000). In a press release, the stud

said: "2020 was another very successful year

for Yeomanstown stallions and we are looking

forward to the upcoming season. However, in

light of the tough trading conditions faced by

many at this year's bloodstock sales, we have

decided to drop all our fees by 25 per cent."

The son of Acclamation stood 2020 for a fee of

€85,000 and the 15-year-old will be joined by

Invincible Army (Invincible Spirit), El Kabeir

(Scat Daddy) and Camacho (Danehill) at the

    County Kildare stud.

IRE: Fees cut at RathaskerRathasker Stud has followed the example of many

other farms by reducing the fees for the majority of its

resident stallions. Headline act Bungle Inthejungle

(Exceed And Excel), who has had another good

season has been trimmed from €12,000 to €8,000

    (approx. AUD$13,325). Clodovil (Danehill) and

Gregorian’s (Clodovil) fees have been cut from

    €8,000 to €5,000 (approx. AUD$8,325) and €6,000 to

€5,000 respectively, while Coulsty (Kodiac), who had

a very impressive first crop strike-rate, is unchanged

    at €4,000 (approx. AUD$6,600).

FRA: Racing likely to go behind closed doorsFrench racing's three-and-a-half month spell with

crowds on course is set to end today but it is hoped

that a second costly shutdown will be avoided.

France's sports minister Roxana Maracineanu said

the continuation of sport conducted as a profession

was guaranteed. While racing falls under the

ministerial jurisdiction of agriculture and budget,

in nearly all respects it has been treated the same

as other sports during the reopening phase of the

    epidemic. French President Emmanuel Macron

announced a second national lockdown in a

    BY STEVE MORAN | @STEVEM_MORAN

If recent history is any guide, then

    Western Australian galloper Gatting

faces a monumental task to repeat his

Eastern seaboard debut in the Group 1

Maybe Diva (Craiglee) Stakes win in tomorrow’s

Group 1 Underwood Stakes at Caulfield.

Not only does the son of Hard Spun have

to defy the usually huge odds against longshot

winners repeating, he’d become just the third

horse in 30 years to complete the double; 25

have tried and only Weekend Hussler (2008)

and Northerly (2002) have been successful.

Furthermore, none the past ten Craiglee

Stakes winners has managed to win another race

during the spring which is verily dumbfounding

and must cast some doubt over its Group 1 status

in a Melbourne carnival which, ridiculously, has

six Group 1 races from 1600 metres to 2040 metres

    in about as many weeks.

In contrast, the Group 2 Feehan Stakes

    — won this year by Homesman — has been a

much better portent of things to come through

the balance of the spring carnival.

Six of the past ten Feehan winners have

won again in the coming weeks. The exceptions

    include Rekindled Interest and Whobegotyou,

who were later placed in Cox Plates, and Magic

Consol who didn’t race again that year.

Four of the past five Underwood Stakes

winners have come via the Feehan including,

of course, Homesman who won last year after

finishing second in the Moonee Valley race and

he looks a superior horse in 2019.

Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman won

the 2017 Underwood with four-year-old mare

Bonneval [who’d won the Feehan] and they

saddle another four-year-old, this time male,

in The Chosen One — who looks the principal

    danger to Homesman.

The follow-up form of major race winners

is something of a fascination and generally less

impressive than you might think. Examining

the two major races at Caulfield last Saturday is

    interesting.

Begood Toya Mother was a fast and

spectacular winner of the Rupert Clarke Stakes

albeit with a “fired up” Iconoclasm providing

    him with some unexpected cover.

Begood Toya Mother is now expected to be

spelled. Moment Of Change, a low weighted

Rupert Clarke winner like Begood Toya Mother,

is the only victor in recent memory [certainly in

the past ten years] to have had an immediate

break and he returned to run second to Black

Caviar in the Group 1 Lightning Stakes and then

went on to win a brace of Group 1 races.

Trust In A Gust and Stratum Star are the

only Rupert Clarke winners, in the past ten

years, to score again that spring - taking the

Group 1 Toorak Handicap and Group 3 Coongy

    Handicap respectively.

    Similarly, last weekend’s Group 3

Naturalism Stakes has produced just two

subsequent springtime winners in the past

decade; Jameka who went on to win the Group

1 Caulfield Cup and December Draw who won

the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes before failing in

    the Caulfield Cup.

the Melbourne way of going,” Gollan said. "I

think it's important if I can just keep him in his

right grade I can keep him progressing along.

We won't aim too high I don't think at this

stage. And I think if we come back this time

next year we're going to have a bona fide Group

    1 horse." Morning Briefing page 12 >>

Black Heart Bart ($101) held off last

year's winner, the $2.50 favourite Homesman (War Front), to win by a

    short neck.

Fellow Warrnambool-trained veteran Gailo Chop (Deporvito) ($26)

was one and a half lengths away in third.

The Blackfriars (Danehill) gelding ran eighth first-up in the Memsie

Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) behind his new stablemate Scales Of Justice (Not A

Single Doubt), before running 11th in last week’s Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes

(Gr 1, 1400m) behind Begood Toya Mother (Myboycharlie).

"Even though those two runs might have looked a bit plain, he was

warming up and I've been happy with him," jockey Brad Rawiller said.

"Today, the whole way through the run I was thinking 'geez, we're

    going to be in this'."

It was Black Heart Bart’s first win since the 2017 Futurity Stakes (Gr

1, 1400m). He was retired by Weir and his owners almost 12 months ago

after finishing well back in last year’s Toorak Handicap (Gr 1, 1600m).

An emotional Rawiller, the long-time rider of Black Heart Bart, was

delighted to see the gelding return to Group 1 winning form.

It also capped Rawiller’s own comeback from a broken neck which

almost ended his career, having been kept on the sidelines for nearly six

months after being seriously injured last October.

"I've won a Golden Slipper and a Caulfield Cup and I never looked like

getting teary, and I'm nearly in tears," he said.

"It's just amazing. I can't put it into words. Since coming back from my

broken neck it's been a long road.

"At the end of the day I haven't had much to look forward to as far as

rides for the spring and Black Heart Bart was always just my sole focus.

"I've been really happy with how he has been coming along.

"Last week after the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes when I was asked about

him, I said 'he lit the fire today'. But you've still got to see it.

"I'm still overwhelmed myself, to be honest, even though I thought he

    could win today."

    Everest-bound filly Sunlight (Zoustar)

closed strongly late to finish the same distance away in third with Ian

McEwen Stakes winner Faatinah (Nicconi) another short-head further

    back in fourth.

Waller admitted after the race that the horse gets a lot of negative

attention, but this win might put a stop to the bad press.

"He's a popular horse," Waller joked. "We seem to get more criticism

with him than we ever got with

    another certain horse [Winx]

who was probably our last Group

    1 winner here.

    "That's racing, everyone has

got their opinions. He's a good

horse and today he stepped away

well. James didn't panic he just

got there gradually and it was a

    good race.

    "You think punters get

    frustrated, well owning a horse

and training a horse when you're

running in these types of races,

it's a bitter pill to take when you

    don't quite get it right.

"So I think it's a good reward to everybody and I hope the punters had

something on as well and got a bit back from last start when apparently I

    did everything wrong."

Waller hopes Nature Strip secures a spot in the $14 million Everest at

Randwick on October 19 and the gelding will now head to the Schillaci

Stakes (Gr 2, 1100m) at Caulfield on October 12 - the winner of that race

will represent the Melbourne Racing Club in the $14 million sprint a week

    later.

    "I don't think 1200 metres is a problem," Waller said. "I'd say we'll just

see what unfolds in the next few days. If he doesn't get an invite for The

Everest I guess the Schillaci Stakes is the logical choice."

Meanwhile, trainer Shaun Dwyer said Miss Leonidas ran a great race

while Sunlight's co-trainer Tony McEvoy could not hide his delight over

    the mare's performance.

McEvoy said he would run Sunlight the Gilgai Stakes at Flemington,

two weeks before The Everest at Randwick.

"I'm pumped," McEvoy said. "I feel like I've won the race.

"The risk was the 1000 meters tonight and that's all that cost her the

    race."

Passed in for $90,000 (reserve $120,000) at the 2016 Inglis Melbourne

Premier Yearling Sale, Nature Strip (5 g Nicconi - Strikeline by Desert Sun)

took his record to 11 wins and two placings from 18 starts for prize-money

    of $1,879,285.

    As an almost unprecedented

    offering at public auction, there

had been much speculation as to

    what price English King (Camelot)

would fetch when he was offered at Tattersalls

    on Wednesday.

The answer, after a lengthy round of

    bidding, was 925,000gns (approx. AUD$1.79

million) as agent Armando Duarte saw off a

    determined Ted Voute.

As with so many of the choice lots from

the Autumn Horses in Training Sale, the

three-year-old colt will now head to Australia

to continue his racing career, with Duarte's

winning bid struck on the instruction of Paul

    Moroney and Ballymore Thoroughbreds, the

training operation of Moroney's brother, Mike.

The Park Paddocks ring was about as

packed as social distancing measures would

allow as Voute, sat to the right of John O'Kelly's

rostrum, and Alastair Donald, by the partition

next to the exit, set the record-breaking lot on

    his way.

At the 750,000gns mark O'Kelly turned to

Voute and looked for a 25,000gns increase.

When the eventual underbidder signalled a

raise of just 10,000gns, O'Kelly quipped: "You

    are tight!"

However, by this point Duarte, stationed

outside beyond the entrance to the ring, was

well into his stride and continued to meet

Voute's every move. As the bid board showed

    875,000gns there was some uncertainty

over whether Voute, taking instructions via

FaceTime, had thrown in the towel or was

suffering a communication breakdown with his

    client.

He gestured to O'Kelly that he was awaiting

instruction, but no sooner had he appeared to

try and buy himself some time than he indicated

a raise to 900,000gns. "You'll find out?" said the

    auctioneer. "You did find out!"

However, despite O'Kelly's efforts to coax a

final effort from the underbidder, Voute had no

further response when Duarte signalled a play

    of 925,000gns.

English King won two races for Ed Walker

and owner Bjorn Nielsen, including the

    Lingfield Derby Trial (Listed, 1m 3.5f), a

performance that propelled him to the head of

the betting for the Epsom Classic (Gr 1, 1m 4f)

itself. Although pleased with the price English

King made, Walker described seeing the colt

    sell as a "bittersweet" experience.

"I'd have far rather won that money on

the track or won the Derby with him," said a

sanguine Walker. "But it's just been the perfect

storm with him; in a normal year Bjorn may have

sold more yearlings or been up for competing

    internationally with him from home.

"But when I tried to persuade Bjorn to keep

him and aim for these big races in Australia and

Hong Kong, quite rightly he was worried about

whether we would be able to go to the races - or

will racing even be happening. Unfortunately, it

was the perfect storm for me trying to hang on

to him. It's a great result in the ring though, and

as Bjorn puts so much into the game it's great to

get a result like that for him. It's crap for me as a

    young-ish trainer though!"

English King broke a 30-year-old track

record when winning the Lingfield Derby Trial

and was far from disgraced in fifth in the Classic

itself having been caught back in the ruck in

    behind runaway winner Serpentine (Galileo).

    Although Walker's disappointment was clear,

he said he hoped the colt would fulfil the

potential he is adamant he possesses, even if it

    is for new connections.

"We've had a great journey with him, God

he made lockdown a lot more interesting!" said

Walker. "It didn't end how we hoped it would

but things just played against him. I still believe

he'll be a very good horse though and I'm very

grateful to the guys who've bought him. He's

tailor made for the Melbourne Cup and I'd be

thrilled if he could go and win the Cup for his

    new owners."

The three-year-old was making his second

appearance at public auction, having been

bought by Jeremy Brummitt for €210,000 at the

Arqana October Yearling Sale in 2018.

Ballymore back in actionPrior to securing English King, Duarte

struck a winning bid of 350,000gns (approx.

AUD$677,400), for Emissary (Kingman) a half-

brother to Derby hero Workforce also secured

    on behalf of Ballymore Thoroughbreds.

"Hopefully he'll be a nice type for next year

as he's improving all the time and is by a proper

sire in Kingman," said Duarte. "He had to tick all

the boxes; pedigree, sire, the form, the trainer.

"But being from Juddmonte, we know he

has a good background and a proper pedigree,

which is very important for my guys. He passed

the vet too, which is very hard to do. This kind

of horse doesn't come on the market very often

so we decided to have a crack. If he'd have sold

last year he'd have cost more but as he's here we

decided it was time to buy."

The three-year-old colt ran five times for

Hugo Palmer and Khalid Abdullah, winning a

Wolverhampton novice stakes on debut and a

Yarmouth handicap from an official rating of 97

    on his most recent start.

Ferguson follows upJohn Ferguson secured a trio of eyecatching

recruits for Chris Waller during day two of the

Autumn Horses in Training Sale, and was

back in action on Wednesday when going to

    370,000gns (approx. AUD$715,000) for the

    smart three-year-old Bullfinch (Kodiac).

    Offered by The Castlebridge Consignment

as part of the Rothschilds' Waddesdon Stud

dispersal, Bullfinch won three of his five starts

while under the care of Roger Charlton, with

victory in a Chelmsford novice stakes at two

followed by a brace of successes at Kempton,

the latter of which earned the colt a Racing Post

    Rating (RPR) of 106.

As well as an upwardly mobile race record,

Bullfinch boasts a strong pedigree as he is the

second foal out of Thistle Bird (Selkirk) who

peaked at the age of six when winning the Pretty

    Polly Stakes (Gr 1, 1m 2f).

"He's got undoubted ability, he's been

    beautifully trained and he's progressive,"

said Ferguson. "And the mare went on to be a

champion older mare, she was wonderful too.

"Kodiac has also had a winner of the Caulfield

Cup with Best Solution, who we bought here a

few years ago, so from an Australian point of view,

there are a lot of reasons to think he could be a lot

    of fun down there."

The purchase of Bullfinch took Waller's

Tattersalls haul to five, bought for receipts

    totalling 912,000gns (approx. AUD$1.76

    million).

    Smith lands Vadamos colt

JS Bloodstock and Matt Smith Racing

    purchased the Ralph Beckett-trained two-year-

old maiden winner Desert Empire (Vadamos)

for 22,000gns (approx. AUS$42,300) on the

final day of Newmarket’s Tattersalls Horses in

    Training Sale.

Desert Empire, bought by Billy Jackson-

Stops on behalf of Sydney trainer Smith, won

on debut at Lingfield earlier this month by half

a length under Tom Marquand, before finishing

down the field at Chelmsford on his only other

    appearance to date.

"I have been the underbidder on a few

through the week," said Jackson-Stops. "This is

a nice sort and heading to Australia as a two-

year-old gives him plenty of options. Hopefully

he will make up into a nice stayer."

Desert Empire is from the first-crop of

    Tally-Ho Stud's Prix du Moulin (Gr 1, 1600m)

winner Vadamos (Monsun), who has sired ten

    winners so far.

    Following two trial successes, the

    Jamie Richards-trained Palamos (2

c Extreme Choice - Unrevealed by

Forest Wildcat) was sent off a warm

favourite for his debut and fully justified his odds

with an impressive performance at Te Rapa.

Ridden by Troy Harris, Palamos settled fourth

in the field of nine and pulled out to challenge into

the straight, but ran around until the 200-metre

    pole.

Once he got his mind on the job, Palamos

cruised up alongside the two leading horses and

drove clear convincingly at the 100-metre marker

to win by two lengths in a sharp time of 58.35

    seconds.

    The Glen Harvey-trained Miss Ipenema

(Sacred Falls) ran into second after setting the

pace with King Of Reds (Burgundy), who finished

    close behind in third.

Victory put Palamos near the top of the

qualifying table for the Karaka Million 2YO (1200m)

at Ellerslie in January and the Te Akau Racing team

were delighted with his race day debut.

“He’s a nice horse who had impressed

us at home and who had trialled up very well

    beforehand,” Richards said.

“We thought he could go close and it was a good

win as Troy tucked him in nicely behind them and

brought him out at the right time in the straight.

“Troy is exceptionally good at educating the

younger horses and this colt will learn a lot from

    today.

“He can go in the paddock now for a couple of

weeks, put some weight on and then we can put

a programme together to get him to the Karaka

    Million.

“That win should be enough to qualify him,

which is great as with the money in the bank early

on, we can afford to pick and choose just where

we take him to get him to the race.”

Palamos is the son of first season sire Extreme

Choice (Not A Single Doubt), who landed the

Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) and Moir

Stakes (Gr 1, 1000m) during an impressive career.

Extreme Choice had his first two winners on

Saturday, with Tiger Of Malay joining Palamos in

the winners’ enclosure following a maiden victory

at Randwick. Palamos’s dam Unrevealed (Forest

Wildcat) won four of her 22 starts in Japan.

Palamos is raced by Hong Kong-based

    businessman Edmund Wong, who became

involved with the Te Akau Racing operation

after contacting David Ellis, who bought him

for $85,000 at the 2020 New Zealand Bloodstock

    National Yearling Sale.

“This is the first horse we’ve started for

Edmund Wong, who lives in Hong Kong, and it’s

a real honour to have horses in training for him,”

    Ellis said.

“He rang me out of the blue one day and

asked me to buy a weanling for him.

“I had trouble deciding between three and

he had me buy them all. Although not early two-

year-olds, they are all showing something.

“I then bought this yearling, which he liked,

and I recently bought the full-brother to Werther

for him as he also owns the mare.”

Wong took his first step into the breeding side

of the industry through the private sale purchase

of blue-hen mare Bagalollies (Zabeel), the dam

of former Hong Kong Horse of the Year Werther

(Tavistock) and his stakes performing siblings

    Gobstopper (Tavistock), Milseain (Tavistock) and

    Toffee Tongue (Tavistock).
