don’t cross the betsy ross The Before the Bridge Music Festival, scheduled for sat sep 18, will combine some of South Jersey’s hottest local sounds with those of musicians from Pennsylvania, New York, and Virginia. The goal of the festival is to bring the music fans in the suburbs a full day of independent, grassroots music. Expect to hear punk, reggae, folk, rock, electronica, and everything in between. There’s no need to cross the bridge! Grooveground and PlantLife Events are creating an event that will not only expose up-and-coming musicians, but also bring renowned regional artists to the borough. The event will begin at 12n and last well into the evening. The Grooveground tent will serve up food and beverages to the hungry masses. oh, groucho! Did you know that the Ritz Theatre Company recently joined forces with Ted Wioncek’s critically acclaimed theatre company, The Collaborative Act Studio? It’s anticipated that this partnership will bring daring and edgy theatrical offerings to the Ritz’s performance schedule. First up, the Ritz Theatre will present the Collaborative Act Studio’s Production of Groucho: A Life in Revue. Imagine experiencing true historic Vaudeville theatre in a true historic Vaudeville theatre! Those witty, wacky, Marx Brothers will return during an award-winning, nonstop musical romp written by Groucho’s son, Arthur Marx, and Robert Fisher. The Collaborative Act Studio’s Founder and Producing Artistic Director, Ted Wioncek, will play Groucho. boating for all Together with I BOAT NJ, The Cooper River Yacht Club is offering a free boating camp to students living in the City of Camden (ages nine to 16) and students living in Camden County who receive financial assistance for school lunches or are enrolled in either Medicaid or NJ FamilyCare. The classes will run from Mon Aug 23 thru fri Aug 27, from 9am to 4pm daily. Campers will enjoy learning about boating safety, sailing, canoeing, and kayaking. Thanks to a program developed by the School District, the College of New Jersey (TCNJ), and the Regional Training Institute, residents, school faculty, and others can take graduate-level education courses and obtain advanced degrees in Haddonfield. TCNJ faculty will teach 3-credit graduate-level courses in kindergarten thru 12th-grade education at the Middle School. “Styles of Teaching: Personality Type in the Classroom” will start on fri oct 22. Classroom Action Research courses will also be available. These courses will be open only to students who are matriculated in the Master of Education program at The College of New Jersey. Offerings will include: • “Modes of Inquiry and Research” will commence on fri oct 1. The prerequisite for this course is EDUC 510. • “Exploration of Classroom Inquiry” will begin on sat oct 2. • “Inquiry into Practice” has a prerequisite of EDUC 601/700. get an eyeful at the ritz If you didn’t catch The Full Monty at the Ritz last year – or if you just want to relive a fond memory – then you owe it to yourself to visit the theatre at the end of August. The Full Monty is making a special four-show comeback! A recent Broadway hit by David Yazbek and Terrence McNally, the Americanized stage version of The Full Monty follows six unemployed Buffalo steelworkers who are low on cash and prospects. After watching their wives enjoy male strippers at a local club, the enterprising crew develops their own strip routine. Side-splitting debauchery ensues. The production will include many familiar faces – members of last year’s cast can’t wait to take to the stage: Kris Clayton as Jerry, Michael Anderson as Horse, Brian Rivell as Ethan, Mike Doheny as Harold, Matt Reher as Malcolm, and Alan Krier as Dave. The ritz will have you riveted The Ritz Theatre is gearing up to present Reginald Rose’s Twelve Angry Men in September and October. Set in the 1950’s, Twelve Angry Men is an examination of a group of jurors brought together to deliberate an open-and-shut case. Entrusted with the power to send a teenager to the electric chair for killing his father, the jurors are confined to a small jury room until they reach a unanimous decision. The play examines the men’s personalities, prejudices, biases, indifference, anger, judgments, cultural differences, ignorance, and fears. These traits hamper the jurors’ decision-making abilities, causing them to ignore the case’s real issues. A preview performance will take place on Thu sep 9 at 7:30pm. grab a window seat! Perkins Center for the Arts, located at 30 Irvin Ave, is looking outside the box! An exhibit, called “Through My Window,” features the work of 25 artists from Philadelphia’s Da Vinci Art Alliance who were each given a salvaged window and instructed to turn their window into a work of art. This was no easy task for the artists; there is no escaping a window’s original function and form. Participants were required to expresses an individual interpretation while breathing new life into an everyday object. The results and the exhibit will appeal to art lovers of all ages. A sensational season The wait is over! The Village Playbox, a commu-nity theatre troupe based in Haddon Heights, has announced its upcoming season. The troupe will kick-off with two one-act plays to be held on fri sep 10, sat sep 11, fri sep 17, and sat sep 18 at the First Presbyterian Church. First up is Tom Stoppard’s classic comedy-mur-der mystery, The Real Inspector Hound. The play within a play is an Agatha Christie mystery spoof. The production will then be followed by Tell Me Another Story, Sing Me a Song which addresses mother-daughter issues. The Playbox won the 1991 New Jersey Theatre League Festival with a performance of this production. The group’s annual children’s show will follow in November. Children will be enchanted by Moth-er Goose on the Loose on sat nov 20, fri nov 26, and sat nov 27. The show, directed by Theresa Hoyt, will be performed at the United Methodist Church. Warm up your winter with the George Axelrod comedy Goodbye Charlie. Directed by Steve Allen, performances will be held on fri feb 18, sat feb 19, fri feb 25, and sat feb 26 at the First Presby-terian Church. The Village Playbox’s 71st theatre season will culminate with the John Patrick comedy A Bad Year for Tomatoes. Join the fight It’s round seven in Charlie Clarke’s fight against Cystic Fibrosis (CF)! The seventh annual Charlie’s Fight Night will be held on sat sep 11 from 7pm to 12m at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia. The Charlie’s Fight Committee cordially invites you to join them for the exciting evening. Charlie Clarke is an eighth grader at the Middle School. In most ways Charlie is just like his peers. However, since being diagnosed with CF about five years ago Charlie has had to adhere to strict treatment protocols in order to maintain his health. Charlie’s commitment to staying healthy has allowed him to succeed in both school and sports (soccer, basketball, flag football, and baseball). Charlie and his parents, Lisa and Jim, began Charlie’s Fight shortly after Charlie was diagnosed. Since that time, the Charlie’s Fight Committee has raised over a million dollars to fight CF. Committee members hope to raise the funds needed to develop new medications that will enable Charlie, and others like him, to live happily and comfortably until a cure for CF is found. Over the years, Charlie’s Fight Night has evolved into one of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation’s largest fundraising events in the Delaware Valley region. This year’s extravaganza is not to be missed. The evening will include cocktails, a silent auction, dinner, dancing, and entertainment. Some of Philadelphia’s most notable sports celebrities will be in attendance.
