It’s back to school soon and to the usual routines so why not embrace Autumn with one of the learning programmes or events at Dublin City Public libraries?

Embracing lifelong learning, why not return to the classroom and sign up for the popular Lord Mayor ‘s Certificate in either Local Studies or in Oral History. Now in its fourth year, and featuring some 1916 centenary content, come to the Dublin Festival of History at the Printworks, Dublin Castle from the 23 - 25th September, continuing also in branch libraries until 8 October.

Learn to sing and use your voice to enhance your personal well being at a singing workshop for World Mental Health Day with Rachel Dempsey on Monday 10 October in the Music Library, ILAC centre. You can also learn to write and record a song in a songwriting workshop from the Music library’s New Emerging Artists Series on Saturday 5 November. Traditional music is also the theme of the City Archives’ talks in City Hall during October with a talk on one of Dublin’s legends, Luke Kelly, on Tuesday 25 October.

Libraries offer spaces to ponder and connect with other people in the community, through book clubs, writing groups, and conversation exchanges. New writing groups formed in Ballyfermot, Rathmines and Donaghmede libraries in the Spring with the help of “Fighting Words”. We plan to establish ones in Raheny, Pearse Street and Central Libraries with a special one for teenagers in Ballymun.

An old concept that we would like to kick-start is that of ‘Conversation Salons’ offering opportunities to forge new friends through a facilitated open discussion on a range of topics. As usual, we celebrate the best of Irish and International writing with Childrens Book Festival in October where schoolchildren are invited to libraries to hear from authors and illustrators on how stories develop. During the Dublin Book Festival from 10 - 13 November, branch libraries can look forward to visits from Ger Siggins, Gabriel Fitzmaurice and Lauren O’Neill.

We are also pleased to share details of how to use exciting new online resources introduced this year for all library users accessed via our website. Workshops will help you to download an e-book via BorrowBox, read an e-magazine via Zinio, learn a new language via Mango or avail of a free course through Universal Class and all you need is your library card and password. As you can see, there is plenty to do, explore, hear and shape your world. All you have to do is show up or connect online at www.dublincitypubliclibraries.ie!

Clár an cheoil: Music Library Programme at the Central LibraryOpera Librettists and Libretti, Reality and LegendA series of three illustrated talks by Michael Grant

Thursday 8 September at 1pmLorenzo da Ponte and Mozart

Thursday 15 September at 1pm19th Century Grand Opera (Including Salvatore Cammarano, Felice Romani, and Eugene Scribe) Thursday 22 September at 1pm The librettists of Verdi and Puccini (Including Francesco Maria Piave, Luigi Illica and Giuseppe Giacosa)

In the world of opera, the contribution of librettists to the operatic genre have tended in large measure to be sidelined. In these three talks, illustrated by musical examples, Michael will look at the lives and work of the literary artists who provided the plots and the libretti for many of the great opera composers. He will explore the historical and literary inspirations for these plots and in the process endeavour to sort out fact from fiction. He will also touch on some of the composers who wrote their own libretti including Wagner and the Russian and eastern European opera composers.

Feis Ceoil 1916: The show must go on!A talk by David Mooney, DIT Conservatory of Music and Drama The Feis Ceoil festival of 1916 was due to take place during the week after the Rising. Due to the tenacity of the Feis committee, rather than cancel, the festival was simply postponed until July. This is the story of the planning, the competitors, the event itself and the reactions of the time.

This event is organised as part of Dublin Festival of History 2016. For the full programme of events see [email protected]

Midland –Lár Tíre. Cycling the MGWR from Past to Present An illustrated talk by Pamela de Brí based on exhibition of the same name on display in the library. This multimedia project is the culmination of four years research and documentation, gathered when the artist cycled and explored the route of the former Midland Great Western Railway as it made its way across Ireland. The structure of the railway itself, rather than being the embodiment of the project, positions itself as the support and the host of this work, which allows for an exploration from the present to the past. It encapsulates a period when the railway meant freedom and mobility for the population of an area.

On Raglan Road; Great Irish Love Songs and the Women Who Inspired ThemBased on his forthcoming publication, writer and poet Gerard Hanberry explains the inspiration behind well known Irish songs and ballads. Blackpitts - the Industrial Past of Newmarket and the TentersLocated beside the Poddle, the areas around Blackpitts, Newmarket, Cork Street, Donore and the Tenters were once some of Dublin’s most industrialised areas. In Blackpitts, the tanning pits industry thrived from medieval times, contributing to the area’s name. Later, the Huguenot weavers settled in this area, with a ‘New Market’ for the trading of wool and cloth set out by Earl of Meath in the 1620’s. This fascinating story is brought together in this talk, giving an overview of the industrial past of the area around Blackpitts and Tenters - and the communities that lived here.

Kilmainham, Islandbridge and SCR on the eve of World War 1The South Circular Road (SCR) Dublin, is 2.5 miles long stretching from Heytesbury Street to the Phoenix Park. Originally a military road to carry heavy equipment and allow for marching troops from barracks around the city. The route links radial routes from Dublin, including James Street/Mount Brown, Kilmainham Lane and Conyngham Road near Islandbridge. Historian Cathy Scuffil traces the lives of some who lived on this road in 1911, and looks at how individual terraces of houses and parts of the road were named or renamed, as in the case of Richmond Hill and O’Connell Road near Kilmainham. The presentation ends with what happened next with references to events in WW1.

Seomraí Comhrá: Conversation Salons The French Enlightenment salons of the 18th century were attended by free thinkers, bohemians, artists, revolutionaries, eccentrics and philosophers of the day, who were at the cutting edge of cultural and social change. As part of Social Inclusion Week, Dublin City Libraries will have a couple of conversation salons facilitated by life coach, Heather Bourke, giving you a chance to talk openly about deep topics, burning issues, and what really matters to you The salons will be the perfect place to brainstorm, problem solve, ponder, discuss, philosophise and reflect on the issues and dilemmas that most fascinate and perplex you.

Citizens in Conflict: Dublin 1916Citizens in Conflict: Dublin 1916 is a historic touring exhibition researched and produced by Dublin City Public Libraries which includes eye witness accounts and sources such as Dublin Fire Brigade logbook.

It has a particular focus on the Pearse Street area of the city (formerly Great Brunswick street) where Patrick and Willie Pearse grew up and where Boland’s Mill garrison was commanded by Eamon de Valera. It also remembers the 257 civilians who were killed during the rising including 40 children.

W & R Jacob and the 1916 RisingJacob’s Biscuit Factory on Bishop Street was seized by a group of Irish volunteers under the command of Thomas MacDonagh as part of the armed insurrection against British Rule during Easter 1916. This six panel exhibition takes a unique slant as it considers how factory workers were effected by the Rising & also how the Company Directors reacted in the aftermath. It draws on the primary source material from the Jacobs Biscuit Factory Archive which is now open to public access in Dublin City Library and Archive. The exhibition was produced by Dublin City Archives in collaboration with the Business Information Centre on behalf of Dublin Public Libraries and funded by DCC Decade of Commemoration Fund.

Surgeons and Insurgents RCSI holds a special position in the historical events of the 1916 Easter Rising. The College’s occupation by insurgents under the command of Michael Mallin is a well known aspect of the Easter Rising. However, few will be aware of the role RCSI surgeons played in surrounding hospitals, as they worked tirelessly treating the injured during the rebellion. This exhibition provides fascinating insights into the stories of the surgeons and insurgents and how their lives were remarkably intertwined.

Little Stories, Little PrintsFifty Printmakers from eight printmaking studios around Ireland were invited by The Leinster Printmaking Studio, Clane, Co. Kildare to create ‘little prints’ on ‘little known events or incidents’ during or around the time of the 1916 Rising. Through a variety of organised events the artists were encouraged to research incidents and aspects of life at the time of the Rising and to create little prints in response to their research.

The result is an eclectic mix of interpretations of both the brief and of the artists’ research.

Learn, Create, ParticipateDublin City Public Libraries is developing a vibrant new destination for learning, literature, information and culture in Dublin, a new City Library at the heart of a new Cultural Quarter for Dublin at Parnell Square a partnership project between Dublin City Council and Kennedy Wilson first announced in April 2013.

Parnell Square will be a dynamic cultural quarter, inclusive and open, with places for literature, visual arts, music, media and design over a new 11,000sqm complex, with activities and cultural events spilling out to a new south-facing civic plaza at Parnell Square North.

The City Library will be alive with events, performances, readings and exhibitions. Shared spaces in the Quarter will include an Education Centre, providing high quality workshop space for ‘making’ activities of many kinds. The Music Centre will offer purpose-built performance rehearsal and practice spaces. A Design Space will house a gallery focused on showcasing emerging trends and research in design thinking and practice. An Intercultural hub will act as a national and city wide space and resource for information, interconnection, assistance and inclusion. The design team of Grafton Architects and Shaffrey Associates Architects are working with the project team towards submission of a planning application in 2017.
