Monday 24th May - 6th June < 29th Mo’vember - 12th December Balls’ Bundle Of Briefs Stage 2 of our campaign against the coalition Government’s plans to cut teaching budgets and raise tuition fees has been completed – and what a sequel to National Demo it was! Around 50 student and staff members walked through Winchester town in a silent protest walk on Wednesday 24 th to raise awareness in the local area about the devastating effects that such cuts could have on institutions like The University of Winchester. The student body was invited to a meeting the week before to discuss tactics and after deliberation this was the idea put forward and voted in, so without further ado the Exec Team got to work… Starting at West Downs campus and carrying a cardboard coffin filled with degree scrolls and work folders, we silently walked through town. Were we unlawful? No. Was it extreme? Maybe. But do we think acting in a quiet, unobtrusive way caught more attention? Yes. The majority of comments overheard from passer bys showed support and we were even clapped by some citizens who agreed that the future of Higher Education was looking unfairly grim. A big well done to those who joined in with this event, and a huge thanks to the Union and Uni staff for marshalling and filling hungry tums on our return. It’s been going well and we’ve been making news all over the place (and the BBC website!) so if you still want to show support then keep an eye out for more information. Now, without wanting to leave you with an impression that all I do is campaigns I thought I’d update on the communication side of things too. Both Radio and Magazine Societies are really making headway now; the Magazine Society are bringing their first publication out on December 13 th and Radio Society are currently putting shows together, hopefully broadcasting live in the student union building by Easter - fantastic work from all! The societies will also be holding a joint fundraiser evening on December 7 th too (see inside for more details!) so please come along and support them. Before this though is the Christmas Ball; with both Devlin and DJ Nihal (top DJ from Radio One) headlining and ‘A Nightmare Before Christmas’ as the chosen decorative theme, it looks like amazing night –a shame then that I will be in Gambia (honestly, I’m quite disappointed to be missing my 4 th Xmas Ball in a row!) On this note, we are still supporting the ‘Give for Gambia Project’ so if you haven’t acquired a lovely stripy wristband yet then please throw a pound in the pot at SU Reception and grab a bangle. Since I probably won’t be writing to you again before Christmas, I’d like to take this opportunity to wish you all a very merry Christmas and a Happy New year. Thank you for all the help and support you have given me during my first term in office, it’s been brilliant and much appreciated. Keep safe and keep smiling - You never know when you might just get papped next ;) Krissy Ball Vice President, Communication and Campaigns

Balls’ Bundle Of Briefs

Stage 2 of our campaign against the coalition Government’s plans to cut teaching budgets and raise tuition fees has been completed – and what a sequel to National Demo it was! Around 50 student and staff members walked through Winchester town in a silent protest walk on Wednesday 24th to raise awareness in the local area about the devastating effects that such cuts could have on institutions like The University of Winchester.

Both Radio and Magazine Societies are really making headway now; the Magazine Society are bringing their first publication out on December 13th and Radio Society are currently putting shows together, hopefully broadcasting live in the student union building by Easter - fantastic work from all! The societies will also be holding a joint fundraiser evening on December 7th too (see inside for more details!) so please come along and support them.

Before this though is the Christmas Ball; with both Devlin and DJ Nihal (top DJ from Radio One) headlining and ‘A Nightmare Before Christmas’ as the chosen decorative theme, it looks like amazing night –a shame then that I will be in Gambia (honestly, I’m quite disappointed to be missing my 4th Xmas Ball in a row!) On this note, we are still supporting the ‘Give for Gambia Project’ so if you haven’t acquired a lovely stripy wristband yet then please throw a pound in the pot at SU Reception and grab a bangle.

Since I probably won’t be writing to you again before Christmas, I’d like to take this opportunity to wish you all a very merry Christmas and a Happy New year. Thank you for all the help and support you have given me during my first term in office, it’s been brilliant and much appreciated.

This weeks movies… I’m not really sure I’m best qualified to write anything about Sex and the City or it’s sequel as frankly I never saw the TV show or the films, but… I have it on good authority from both others in the Student Union office and the huge chunk of cash both films took at the box office both assure me that the antics of Sarah Jessica Parker & gang are well worth a watch, and heck they’re both free! Of course I can be a bit more definitive about the last film of the Autumn season. Inception is quite frankly a masterpiece of modern film making. From the visionary writer/director director of The Prestige, Memento and the Batman reboot you would expect a great film, but the twisting visceral brilliance of Inception, excel expectation. If you have not yet seen the Leonardo DiCaprio action thriller, I cannot recommend it highly enough!

Inception’s 6.30pm partner film is the wonderfully dark and suspenseful thriller, Shutter Island. Also staring Leonardo DiCaprio and directed by Martin Scorsese, this film has many thematic similarities to Inception and is a highly enjoyable watch. Pretty tense, suspenseful and creepy film though, so be sure to bring a friend :) Next terms season of films is also shaping up to be a cracker of modern Hollywood blockbusters and brilliant counterpart films - the full programme will be printed in the last WoW of the year.

A very good question! It is not, as you might first think, a charcoal outline of someone’s size 10’s. It is instead a fancy term given as a measure of the impact our everyday activities have on the environment, and in particular climate change. It relates to the amount of greenhouse gases (such as carbon dioxide/CO2) that are produced by doing our daily routine, through burning fossil fuels for electricity, heating and transportation etc.

A carbon footprint is a measurement of all greenhouse gases we individually produce and is normally measured in tonnes (or kg) of carbon dioxide equivalent. The pie chart at the bottom of this page shows the main stuff that make up the total of a typical person's carbon footprint in the developed world. A carbon footprint is made up of the sum of two parts, the primary footprint (shown by the dark slices of the pie chart) and the secondary footprint (shown as the light slices). 1. The primary footprint is a measure of our direct emissions of CO2 from the burning of fossil fuels including home energy use and transportation (e.g. car and plane). We have direct control of these. So the less we use the better we can make the world! 2. The secondary footprint is a measure of the indirect CO2 emissions from the whole life of products we use - those associated with their manufacture and eventual breakdown. To put it very simply – the more we buy the more emissions will be caused on our behalf. You can make really easy steps to reduce our everyday carbon footprint, from only boiling a kettle with exactly how much water in it that you need, to taking another form of public transport in favour of flying (which as a notoriously huge carbon impact). For more information about simple steps in reducing your carbon footprint (and to win a gazillion prizes) why not check out the Student Switch Off website (www.studentswitchoff.org) or our own website www.winchesterstudents.co.uk. Come on, do your bit!

DEVLIN Leaving behind the material ramblings of an archetypal MC, listening to Devlin, you’re more likely to hear tales of conspiracy theories, politics and Pavarotti. A lover of Bob Marley, The Supremes and Bruce Springsteen, Devlin isn’t your average grime artist. The enigmatic, Dagenham born Devlin set the bar for a new generation of Grime music in 2006 with his underground classic, Tales from the Crypt. Current single Runaway reached number 15 in the UK charts, and the new album Bud, Sweat & Beers hit number 21 in the album chart and number 2 in the UK R&B chart.

DJ NIHAL Nihal has been living for music since he started promoting rap shows in his native Essex while still doing his A Levels. By the time he was about to graduate he was signed to a major label, and since then he has been a music journalist. As well as DJing at his own clubnight, Nihal has DJed the Isle Of Wight Festival, Glastonbury and the Bestival in the UK, as well as club gigs up and down the country. With his knowledge of music and the music industry he is regularly asked to appear on TV and comment on music related issues from the Brits and Channel 5's The Wright Stuff to MTV Base's Hip Hop Candy. Nihal can currently be heard on Radio One!
