What’s Possible:

Understanding How the Internet of Things Can Drive Business Growth

Benjamin DolarSalesforce Consultant

First Things First

What Exactly is the Internet of Things?

First Things First

The Internet has been around since the early 1980’s.Yes, many of us are older than the Internet…

Looking back, this could now be defined as “The Internet of People”.

But then, around 2008, the Internet EVOLVED.

Devices began overtaking people in the exchange of data.

This was no longer imaginary, or futuristic.

This was REALITY.

First Things First

The Internet of Things

What exactly do we mean when we say the Internet of Things (IoT)?

The Internet of Things is the networking of physical devices, embedded with sensors, software, and network connectivity, which enable those devices to collect, interpret, and exchange data.

IoT brings the physical and virtual worlds together.

What Makes a Thing, a Thing?

―Hardware

―Data

―Software

―Connectivity

The Internet of Things

The term Internet of Things was coined by Kevin Ashton in 1999. Kevin was the cofounder of the Auto-ID center at MIT, which created the standard for RFID technology.

What else was happening then?

• 1998: Google was incorporated

• 1999: The DOW closed above 10,000

• Y2K!!!

The Time to Act is Now

Use Cases for IoT

Use Cases for IoT

Construction• Sensors (RFID) can track building

parts/components

• Sensors in equipment for predictive maintenance

• Organize tools, machines and people -tracking where they are at all times

• Green buildings• Can shut down unnecessary systems

automatically when not needed (i.e. unoccupied building)

Use Cases for IoT

Manufacturing, Oil & Gas• Remote operation

• Improve workplace safety

• Organize tools, machines and people - tracking where they are

• Predictive maintenance - reduce costs and downtime

Use Cases for IoT

Healthcare• Patient surveillance

• Smart pills and monitoring patches

• Preventive care

• Reward customers wearing devices tracking steps and heartrate

• Monitoring systems that save lives

Privacy

Privacy of data is extremely important to both end consumers and businesses.

• Machines talking to machines – how do they know what is sensitive and what isn’t?

• Are you capturing the right data, the right kind of data, too much data?

• If you’re capturing more data than you’re using, you put your company at risk.

• Are you sharing this data with others?

Are You Ready

To Join the Internet of Things?

Are You Ready?

It’s All About That Data

• Data should drive the strategy.

• Start by identifying business needs.

• Filter down to products.

• Data should be used as a real-time feed to help hone decisions within your business.

The data needs to be actionable!

Are You Ready?

"CRM will be at the heart of digital initiatives in coming years as enterprises look to create more

targeted interactions in a multichannel environment."

Are You Ready?

How Do CRM & IoT Work Together?

1. Product purchased by your customer is stored in your CRM (through direct link, registration, remote connection, etc).

2. Something triggers a sensor on the product.

3. Message is sent to cloud storage for processing.

4. Processes determine if this message should be synced to your CRM.

5. Automated business processes work to notify Service, Marketing or other partners.

IoT is no longer a futuristic notion.

It has been building since 2008.

The Internet of Things is now.
