exam informationtO dO List:Now:Check, double check and triple check your exam calendar. Take note of

the day, time location, exam and items you need to bring with you pens,

calculator etc. Visit http://www.wit.ie/exams/ExamSeatingDiagrams/ to see

where your seat and room is.On the Run up to your Exams:

Go to every class and listen out for exam hints dropped by lecturers. Gather

any notes which you missed during the year. Compile sample answers and

practice writing these out.On the Day:Get up early and give yourself loads of time to get to your exam room. Even if

your exam is first thing in the morning get up that little bit earlier and have a

proper breakfast. Exam Checklist:1. WIT Card2. Pens, pencils, drawing equipment, rulers & other stationary.

3. Water.4. Depending on the subject of the exam you may be allowed to bring in

texts such as a copy of Bunreacht na hÉireann. Find out before the day

what you can bring in.5. Arrive 15 minutes before the start of each exam.

In the Exam Hall:1. WIT operates a clean desk policy so take everything off the desk. Students

are not allowed to bring bags into the exam hall.

2. Make sure your mobile is turned OFF and put on the floor next to your

desk.3. Read the whole paper first and decide which questions you want to do.

4. Showing your rough work is always a good idea. Get some paper at the

start of the exam and hand it up with your exam paper.

5. After reading the exam, jot down any ideas beside the questions on

the exam.6. Never do less than the required number of questions. Allocate time

to questions in proportion to their marks. If you run out of time on

a question move on and come back to it later. The first few marks

in an answer are far easier to pick up than the last few. You can

come back at the end if you have time.

7. Read over your answers at the end of the exam.

The number of Irish road deaths fell to 212 in 2010, the lowest level on record, down 26 from 2009. The 212 who died consisted of 44 pedestrians, 5 cyclists, 91 drivers, 55 passengers and 17 bikers.

Other figures show:• 38% of deaths were aged under 25• Sunday was the most dangerous day of the week with 54

deaths• 43% of road deaths happened at the weekend• The hours between 6pm and 8pm were the most dangerous,

with 27 deaths (13%)

For these reasons, On November 30th, we saw WIT Road Safety Awareness Day. Autoglass were on campus doing repairs on windscreens, Advance Pitstop were on campus doing Safety Checks, Waterford Driving Academy were on campus and gave away up to €500 worth of driving lessons. At 1pm in College Street Campus we saw the Car Crash Re-enactment. It was hard to watch but we hope

it opened the eyes of students and staff in WIT and it might educate them on how fast something can happen that will change your life. I’ like to take this opportunity to thank all who helped out today for Road Safety Awareness Day. Thank you to all the Waterford Emergency Services for carrying out the Car Crash Scenario and also to Claire, Adam & Aideen for taking part. If anyone was affected by the campaign or activities on the day please don’t forget there is a counselling service on campus ([email protected]) or students can speak to me at any time, [email protected]. Be alert today, be alive tomorrow, Drive Safely.

So on the 14th of September we all arrived after a total of 24hours flying time to a nice cosy house and a sufficient bed which will be ours for the next 3 months.

Two weeks of training dragged on but it went through some quite interesting stuff, just like being back in college with the long classes. All that ended two weeks later with a trip to Flattop, one of the mountains nearby.

As the weeks went on we all began to find our feet in our areas for placement, some in the Rec Centre, some in group homes and some in maintenance, not the most ideal but it had to be done.

The Rec centre is a place for both adults and children whom experience intellectual disabilities to come and chill out for the day or after school and to learn new skills. The group homes involve us, as the staff going into the homes of the individuals and helping them , be it getting ready for school, showering them or even just to be their to care for them and give the HAC in the house a break.

Many chores are involved in this such as refreshing and changing the individuals, giving them their medication, some orally and some through a g-tube, taking trash out and doing their laundry. Some of us are in quite a few different homes throughout the week and this involves doing the above chores and maybe more.

If you happen to be on the day shift, there is a possibility of bringing the individuals out on day habilitation to get them out of the home and to work on some of their goals, such as improving their communication skills or simply getting them out of their environment and to experience and see something new. All in all this has been an unbelievable experience and three months well spent in Alaska. The cold is something else though, -23 is our record so far.

Waterford Institute of Technology’s Premier soccer side won the Premier South League last Tuesday afternoon with another excellent battling performance saw them turn a one goal half time deficit into a one goal win over UCC in Waterford RSC.

With the prize of a home draw in the quarter finals after Christmas it was crucial for the home side to collect all three points in this game. Both sides were oozing with skill and determination played some beautiful football throughout the 90 minutes.

UCC were awarded a penalty after 15 minutes which they dually converted and with both sides guilty of missing some glorious chances it was to be the only goal of the opening half as UCC held a 1-0 lead at the interval.

The second half saw WIT step up to the plate and deliver the goods with a 64th minutes strike from the boot of Ian Crowley pulling the sides level. That goal set the game up for a frenetic finish and both sides pressed hard for a winner with UCC unlucky to see a volley superbly tipped around the post by Kevin Burns.

The odd goal in three arrived on the 72nd minute as Darragh Walshe pulled back an amazing ball for Craig McGuire to slide the ball past the UCC keeper to give WIT another impressive win. WIT now has a break from action until the New Year, when they will have a home quarter final tie to look forward too. With players like John Frost and AJ Lehane in fine form in defence and attacking players Ian Crowley, Craig McGuire and Aaron Galibert

putting in good performances last Tuesday WIT will eagerly be looking forward to the draw which takes place on Thursday 8th December.

Wit Crowned southern Fresher’s Camogie championsWIT celebrated success again on the camogie fields last week as the fresher’s camogie side captured the Southern Ireland CCAO seven-a-side title in the beautiful surroundings of Inniscarra Community Centre in Cork.

The format for the competition saw two groups play out the league stages with seven teams involved including Cork IT ,NUI Galway 1&2 ,WIT 1&2, UL and Mary I. With some exciting wins in the group stages WIT pushed through to the semi final after beating NUIG 1, UL and Cork IT.

In the semi final WIT had a comfortable 6-4 to 0-1 win over NUIG 2 to set up a mouth watering final against Mary I.

WIT began the final in blistering fashion with Marie Dargan(4) and Ruth Jones (1) finding the net , while Shelly Farrell and Emma Comerford both raised white flags to give WIT a nine point lead at half time. Mary I struck back in the second half finding the net on five occasions in a pulsating final, Mary I nearly took the lead but WIT had to thank Anne Marie Lennon for a point blank save, a point to level the side soon followed and extra time was necessary.

In extra time WIT came out a rejuvenated side with Emma Comerford, Aoife Sheil and Louise Sinnott adding point to forge a four point lead, and it was a lead that was never lost as the title was collected on a 7-6 to 7-2 score line, with Ruth Jones receiving the cup at the end of a good days work.
