Background
• 6 different types of wheat grown in the US
• Durum
• Soft White
• Hard White
• Hard Red Winter
• Hard Red Spring
• Soft Red Winter
Durum
• Used mainly for premium pasta, couscous, and some
Mediterranean breads.
• Grown mainly in North Dakota, with some smaller production
in Montana, Arizona and California
Soft White
• Mainly used for cakes, pastries and Asian-style noodles, Soft White is also
used for Middle Eastern flat breads.
• Grown mainly in the north-west, with some production
in New York and Michigan
Hard White
• Mainly used for Asian-style noodles, whole wheat white flour, tortillas, pan
breads and flat breads
• Newest type of wheat grown in the US, therefore
production is limited.
Hard Red Winter
• Mainly used for pan bread, hard rolls, flat breads, tortillas, general purpose
flour and cereal.
• Grown from Texas north to North Dakota, and west
to Montana
Hard Red Spring
• Mainly used for hearth breads, rolls, croissants, bagels and pizza crust
• Grown in Minnesota, the Dakotas, and Montana
Soft Red Winter
• Mainly used for cookies, crackers, pretzels, pastries and flat breads
• Grown in the South-East and Mid-West.
Exports
• The US exported 25.2 million metric tons of wheat in 2017
• The value of that was $5.4 billion
• US number 1 exporter dollar wise, and number 3 amount wise
• Russia is the largest exporter amount wise (36 million metric tons)
Imports
• Japan, Mexico and the Philippines are the top 3 importers of US wheat over
the past 5 years.
• Indonesia is the top importer worldwide.
Future Concerns
• Japan has been the US largest importer for years. With the US withdrawing
from the TPP, tariffs on Canadian and Australian wheat are expected to drop,
which could lead to larger imports from those countries.
• Canada produced 30 million metric tons and exports 22.5 MMT in 2017,
while Australia produced 21.5 MMT and exports 16 MMT in 2017.
• They would be more than capable of supplying Japan with its wheat.
Future Concerns
• Mexico has been the US 2nd largest importer for years. If the US does
withdraw from NAFTA as well, we could be at a trade disadvantage with
them as well.
