It is with a sad heart that I inform you that a Past President (1979) of the Wheaton-Kensington Chamber of Commerce has passed away.Be Be Bailey, (also the first female vice-president of the Chamber) diedNov. 17, 2008 of complications from a fall. After “retiring” and moving south, my mother took care of my dad until hepassed away from Alzheimer’s. Then, she opened a sandwich shop, starteda women’s Democratic club and served as chairwoman of the DemocraticParty of Kershaw County, South Carolina until she retired again anddevoted herself to spoiling her grandchildren. While many of the business members have changed, some are still there inWheaton. It would please my mother to no end – to know that businesseslike the Little Bitts Shop are still around – after she worked to see that theMetro station plans were altered to spare the Triangle Lane businesses.I have been reflecting on the many fun events Iattended and the work that took place in the past.I hope that the Wheaton business district thrivesin the future and that the Chamber continues to be a resource for small businesses where long-term friendships are forged.Very Truly Yours,Deborah R. Bailey

goal. Discipline, character development, and teamwork are skills children will useand depend on throughout their lives.Elena Novak and husband Alexei Kiliakovwere among the final wave of skaters produced by a state-supported developmental system in the Soviet Union that was unsurpassed in

producing world-class pairs anddance teams. They relocated toEngland in 1993, where Kiliakovtoured with Tatiana Tarasova’sRussian All-Stars, and to theU.S. in 1999, where they spentfour years in the cast of Disneyon Ice. When injuries and gener-al wear-and-tear forced them off

the ice, they landed at the Wheaton Ice Arena, where they set up shop ascoaches along with Ukrainian Dmytri Ilin, also a Disney alumnus. They’ve had notable success keeping boys in their program. At manyskating clubs, the “dance program” can consist entirely of young female

skaters waiting for suitable(and scarce) male partners. When confronted with anAmerican perception thatskating and dancing maybe insufficiently masculine,Kiliakov produces aRussian study that compared the strength and agility of an elitegroup of male ice dancers

with a similarly advanced group of hockey players. The results were one-sided – in favor of the skaters. In December, a month after our mixer, theWISA kids swept the medal ceremonies at the 2009 Junior Nationals Championship in Lake Placid, New York. The Juvenile icedancing team of Rachel Parsons and Kyle MacMillan won the gold medal.Danvi Pham and Vu Pham won 2nd place;Lorraine McNamara and Quinn Carpenter 4th place; and Kristina Rexford and MichaelParsons 5th place in Intermediate Dance. The skaters from WISA are among theyoungest skaters competing in ice dancing in the United States. Coaches, judges and skaters take notice of this group of youngsters from Wheaton,Maryland.Visitors are welcome to view Academy training sessions at the WheatonIce Arena, 11717 Orebaugh Ave, Wheaton, MD 20902 / 301-649-3640.

Businesses and Residents Contribute Over $3,200 to Holiday On Duty Fund this SeasonThe Holiday On Duty Fund sponsored by the Wheaton & KensingtonChamber of Commerce marked its 10th Anniversary Year with rousingsupport from the entire region! Our Business/Residential Community contributed over $3,200 for theChamber Holiday On Duty Fund for Thanksgiving and Christmas 2008,as well as for New Year’s 2009. Even in these times of greater economicuncertainty, our Wheaton-Kensington Community ensured, through themany generous donations, that the mission of the Fund was fulfilled. The campaign makes sure that the Public Safety personnel are fed Holidaymeals on Thanksgiving and Christmas Day. And for the last three years, because of the community’s generosity, we have also been able to bring holiday meals on New Year. The agencies served holiday meals were: the Wheaton Rescue Squad,Montgomery County Police 4th District Station (Wheaton/Glenmont),officers from the Montgomery County 2nd District Station (Bethesda/Kensington), and all Kensington Volunteer Fire Stations were invited tojoin firefighters at Station #5.The LA & LK Greenberg Charitable Foundation gave a substantial monetary donation, as did Sherwood Associates, the Hughes United

Methodist Women, Little Bitts Shop, the Alan Levin Foundation,Signal Financial Federal Credit Union, Kensington Volunteer FireDepartment, Jerry Thompson & Associates, and management and associates from Fitzgerald Auto Mall-Wheaton.Every single contribution, large or small, helped the Chamber realize itsgoal of feeding the officers on duty during the holidays. All monies raisedwent directly to our Holiday On Duty Fund. No administrative fees areever taken. The Chamber is ever grateful to two very special vendors who have madethis Fund possible since its inception: Shaul Kosher Market in the KempMill area of Silver Spring, and Honey Baked Ham in Gaithersburg. These two merchants have not only prepared wonderful meals for ourPublic Safety personnel time and again, but have also given the Chamber significant discounts. Both Shaul and Honey Baked Ham have made this campaign not only possible, but successful. This community project, is a tribute to our Public Safety personnel. This is the way our community works together and the way we say a very big“Thank You”! The Chamber also wishes a heartfelt “Thank You” to all ofour contributors. You make us proud to live in this neighborhood.
