District 7730’s annual RYLA or Rotary Youth Leadership Awards was held January 28-January 30, 2011, at the Trinity Center, Pine Knolls Shores, North Carolina. The first RYLA was held in July, 1961, in Brisbane, Australia, and became a structured RI program in 1971. RYLA
conferences range from three to ten days in length. District 7730’s is a 46 hour program providing high school Juniors the opportunity to hear from high quality professional speakers, interact during sessions, get to know their peers during “fun time”, and learn from each other.
RYLA emphasizes leadership, citizenship, and personal growth, and aims to
• Demonstrate Rotary's respect and concern for youth
• Provide an effective training experience for selected youth and potential leaders
• Encourage leadership of youth by youth
Recognize publicly young people who are rendering service to their communities

RYLA Continued
SBI sponsored the following students at this year’s conference:
Juliana Zio Jacob Hill
Hanna Garrett Corryn Diemer
Amy Sapp Trevawn Scott
Bert Frink
Shallotte Rotary sponsored five students to the conference as well. The commitment of our two clubs to RYLA makes a difference in these young lives for years to come. Equally important are the Rotarians who organize, facilitate, and act as cabin chaperones or counselors for the weekend. This year Bob Stinson, Mary Ellen Good and Bill Morrow (unofficial photographer for the weekend) participated for the entire weekend. John and Katherine Mohr helped transport students to the event and stayed for the day on Friday. All of us are already planning for next year. Special recognition goes to Rotarian Phil Panzerella for his continued leadership in our District’s RYLA program.
Thank you to each member of SBI for your continued generosity and hard work in fundraising that allows us to provide this experience for so many of our Youth! Take advantage of the opportunity to enjoy a scenic ride to Pine Knolls Shores and experience some part of forty six hours that will impact your life as well.

Anne Parker Speaks to SBI
www.carolinacreations.
Anne Parker shared her very heartfelt and informative talk about the Blue Star Mothers with the Club last week.
Blue Star Mothers is an organization of mothers who share the pride and support they have for their sons and daughters, the men and women, who are or have served our country as members of the Armed Forces of the United States.
Anne is the president and founder of the Grand Strand Blue Star Mothers. Blue Star Mothers was formally chartered by the United States Congress in 1960 but was first conceived and started operating as early as January 1942. Since the chartering of the Grand Stand chapter in 2008, the local organization has mailed over 500 care packages to deployed troops and raised over $10,000 to support their activities.
If you know of South and North Carolina mothers whose sons or daughters are serving in the Armed Forces please encourage them to contact Anne by calling (843)390-5639 or by email at [email protected].
More information regarding programs, activities and chapter meetings can be found by visiting www.GrandStrandBlueStarMothers.com.
