Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time

On February 22nd each year, the Church celebrates the feast of

the Chair of St. Peter. This might seem odd, as the church

doesn't venerate furniture. There's no feast of the end-tables of

St. Cyprian, or feast of the Sofa of St. Andrew. So, what's with

the chair?

In pre-Christian Rome, the feast of Parentalia (celebrated in the

third week of February) commemorated deceased relatives and

friends, and it was traditional to leave an empty chair at the

table in their honor. This empty chair has parallels in many

other faiths, including Judaism. Christianity, in its early

centuries, often established feasts and holiday that coincided

with—and generally supplanted—the celebrations of the larger

culture.

As early as the 4th

Century, there is

evidence of a

Christian feast

celebrating the Chair

of Peter. The

significance isn't the

chair itself, but

rather the authority

it represents. The

Latin word for chair,

cathedra, is where

we get the word

cathedral. And

when a pope speaks

a pronouncement

with his full authority as head of the Church, he is said to speak

"ex cathedra" or, "from the chair." So, when we observe the

Feast of the Chair of St. Peter, we're celebrating the office of the

pope as the authoritative head of the Church.

As for St. Peter's original chair, it is represented in St. Peter's

basilica in Rome by an elaborate sculpture by Bernini. The

relics of the chair itself are in the Vatican treasury, and not on

public display. Those relics were given to the Vatican in the

year 875 by King Charles II of France.

St. Mary’s is very close to its goal of $795,340. If you haven’t

already made a pledge please consider doing so to help St. Mary’s

reach its goal. After 100% of the goal is reached, the parish keeps

80% of the funds. When the funds raised are at 120% of the goal, or

after $954,408, the parish keeps 100% of the funds. Please help us

restore our beautiful St. Mary’s Church building.

Work continues to repair and paint the ceiling and walls of

the church. It is a tedious and time consuming process to

repair these surfaces to their original condition. Here are

some bird’s eye view pictures from the top of the scaffolding.

The project foreman, Leo, is seen working near one of the

angels. Look for pictures of the angels in next week’s bulletin.

NEW LENTEN SCHEDULE

After much consideration our

Lenten Mass schedule will be

different this year due to our

restoration project. We are grateful

to our school community for being

flexible with us during this time. To ensure the safety of our students

and to respect their learning environment, we will not be offering a

specific times. We will continue with our regular weekly Mass

PAX Good Behavior Game:

St. Mary’s is one of 5 schools in the Albany diocese

selected to participate in a grant that provides

support for implementing the PAX Good Behavior Game.

PAX refers to peace, productivity, health and

happiness for everyone in the classroom.

It is an internationally recognized EvidenceBased

Program. It is a classroombased system where teachers

and students work together to reinforce prosocial &

academic behavior, reduces negative influences, and

limits problematic behavioral skills. This translates to self

regulation, selfcontrol and coregulation, resulting in

immediate and lifetime positive socialemotional

outcomes for the students. Our classroom teachers have

slowly introduced PAX to their classes since September

and now it is a natural part of their day.

Together, the teachers

and students create a

vision for what they want

to see, hear, feel and do

during the school day.

This is a living document

that changes as the

children learn and grow.

PAX leaders are

becoming more and more

evident each day!

There are many “kernels” or fundamental parts to the

PAX program. A fan favorite is the use of a harmonica

to gain the children’s attention. It is a very effective

and sensitive tool to signal the children to stop what

they are doing, give the quiet sign and wait for

directions.

Another “kernel” is called “Tootles.” These are positive

notes of praise or thanks for a job well done. They

encourage the behaviors in others we want to see

more of. “Tootles” can be given and received by a

teacher, a classmate, a parent… or just about anyone!

Here is a picture of

our second graders

giving “Tootles” to

our school

principal, Mrs.

Fitzgerald. It made

her day to receive them!!

Among the many strengths about PAX are the

consistency across grade levels, the focus on the

positive, and we are helping the children learn the

value of intrinsic rewards. The outcome of teachers

and students cocreating a nurturing environment is

aligned with our school’s mission of providing an

education guided by the Gospel’s spirit of love.

Join us as we view the life story of

the Virgin Mary, from her childhood

through the Resurrection of Jesus,

capturing the essence of her profound

faith and trust in God. The film

vividly captures the essence of Mary’s

profound faith and trust in God

amidst the great mysteries that she

lived with as the Mother of the

Messiah, as well as her compassionate humanity and concern

for others, and the deep love that she and Jesus shared for one

another. The movie underscores her special role in God’s plan

for our redemption, her unique relationship with Christ, and

the tremendous suffering that she endured in union with his

Passion and Death, as well as her serene joy at his

Resurrection. Call Mary Ann 518-858-7589.

Faith Formation

What is Confirmation?

"In the moments that we are not equipped

to be the man or woman we are called to

be, the grace of the Holy Spirit provides."

- Dan Harms

The Sacrament of Confirmation is not a rite of passage, nor a

graduation from Faith Formation. Rather, it’s all about what

God is doing for God’s beloved daughters and sons.

Just as Baptism gives new life, Eucharist nourishes life, and

Reconciliation restores life when it is broken,

Confirmation strengthens that life by the gifts of the Holy

Spirit (cf. CCC 1285).

Why? So that the individual can better defend and witness to

the faith through the gifts and workings of the Holy Spirit. And

there are—and will be—many situations where we are called

upon to defend and witness to our faith.

Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all

things.” ~First Corinthians 12:4-8
