CONCEPT*

WHEN TO USE ANIMATION

Animation tends to favour stories with:

Life-Action tends to favour stories that:

✦ non realistic characters

✦ complex ideas

✦ depend on seeing real people and locations

Lots of cheap options available

TEMPLATES

None of them speaks for YOU

If you want people to watch your video and react to it you have to produce one that

is worth watching.

WHAT ANIMATION CAN DO FOR YOU

Grab Attention

Communicate quickly

Explain complex ideas and products

Corporate Explainer video Motion Graphics video Cartoon Style video

Whiteboard video Kinetic Typography video Stop-motion video

SCRIPT

ACT I ACT II ACT III Beginning Middle End

SET UP CONFRONTATION/DEVELOPMENT RESOLUTION

Post CANNOT fix a problematic script.

ANIMATION SCRIPTS✦ are longer than live action

✦ have detailed scene descriptions

EXT. STREET (MATRIX) - DAY

Soldiers pick themselves up just in time to hear another engine - asuper powerful track bike, emerges from the burnt rubber smoke screen.A wheely bar on the back of the bike keeps it from flipping around therear tire as it accelerates like a bullet out of a barrel. There isn’teven time to take a shot until she’s gone.

INT. COUNTACH (MATRIX) - DAY

THEY rocket up the entry to a highway, ripping past cars by driving upthe breakdown lane. Once they hit a straightaway Trinity floors it,and the speedo creeps up past 130 as they dodge in and out of cars.

MORPHEUS grabs his twisted, folded legs. He was literally poured intothe seat. Concentrating, his face knotting in pain, he straightens thebroken, fractured legs. He closes his eyes and concentrates.

EXT. SUGAR RUSH RACE ARENA

Giant soda bottles pop and spray. The lids of the fan boxes fly off, revealing hundreds of spectators. The racers line up at the start. A blimp flies over head. King Candy stands in his royal box.

KING CANDYMy sweet subjects, I can without apinch of hesitation assure you that I have never been so happy in all my life to say the following words:Let the Random Roster Race commence!

Cheers! King Candy slides down his royal banner. He lands in his own kart,a pink and white snowball style kart that doubled as the royal throne when Vanellope was a Princess. A MARSHMALLOW waves the checkered flag. And they’re off!

BEHIND THE STANDSRalph and Felix ride on the back of Vanellope’s kart,it is an odd-looking vehicle, composed of frosting, sprinkles, and other sweets with no overriding theme - unlike the other karts in the game - holding on for dear life, as she drives.

RALPHRemember, you don’t have to win!Just cross that finish line, and you’ll be a real racer.

As they enter the arena, Ralph and Felix jump off the kart.

VANELLOPEI’m already a real racer, and I’mgonna win!

Vanellope speeds across the starting line. She’s in the race!

OUT ON THE TRACKThe racers enter GUM BALL PASS and must dodge gum balls the size of bowling balls.

Adorabeezle Winterpop hits a Power-Up. Her kart transforms to reveals an ice cream cannon.

ANNOUNCER Power up!

She shoots a scoop of ice cream, hitting Jubileena square in the face.

ANNOUNCER (CONT’D) Oh, Ala Mode!

King Candy hits a Power-Up. The hood of his unleashes a canon. He fires three fireballs Minty, knocking them out of his way.

STORYBOARD

The STORYBOARD is the blueprint of an animation production.

You are pretty much “DIRECTING” on page.

✦ know how your video will look like (locations/backgrounds, characters, additional elements and props)

✦ include all SFX

✦ sign off as much as possible on paper

VOICE OVER

Treat VOICE OVER as if it’s an additional character to your story.

TIPS✦ Have a second voice over script.

✦ Include V.O notes on your storyboard.

EXECUTION*

HOW TO PREPARE FOR ANIMATION

Know your story. Plan out every detail.

TIPS✦ Map out your timings.

✦ Create an animatic.

ADD PRODUCTION VALUE

ANIMATION is all about constant motion and transformation.
