A Rube Goldberg machine is a machine built from various non-traditional parts and everyday objects, which runs through a complex and unnecessary series of steps to perform a simple task. The goal of this contest is for students to design such a machine, to prepare the parts and to assemble the parts on site at the festival.

THE RUBRIC: The machines will be judged by four criteria.

1. How clear, concise and creative the written explanation of the machine and its steps is.

2. How complex and unnecessary the machine is, from start to completion (the more complex and unnecessary, the better.)

3. The amount of imagination and creativity behind the design of the machine

4. The completion of the simple task given from a single starting point through the various steps.

Example: How accurately was the tooth-paste applied? Was there too much or too little? You provide the materials and parts, we provide the space. The machine can be planned and the parts

can be built before the competition, but it must all be assembled on site—we don’t want anyone hauling large pieces of equipment. Check out this video for more information: http://vimeo.com/22111968THERULES:• Maximumof15stepsinvolved• Maximumof90secondsruntimefromstartto
