St. Elizabeth’s Episcopal Church Sudbury, Massachusetts January 2014
“When the song of the angels is stilled,
When the star in the sky is gone,
When the kings and princes are home,
When the shepherds are back with their flock,
The work of Christmas begins.
To find the lost,
To heal the broken,
To feed the hungry,
To release the prisoner,
To rebuild the nations,
To bring peace among people,
To make music in the heart.”
Howard Thurman (1899-1981)
Dean of Chapel, Howard & Boston Universities
Honorary Canon,

The Mantle January 2014
2
From Our Rector by The Rev. Barbara Williamson
T his year I have felt called to write a Christmas card to every single one of you, full of my gratitude for the contributions each of you makes to St.
Elizabeth's Episcopal Church in fulfillment of your baptismal promises and to the glory of God. I deeply regret the impracticality of composing 250 personal letters. The best I can do is to make an attempt here to offer my grateful thanks to you for who you are, what you do, and how much you give.
You may think I am talking only to the core leadership, people like Win Treese, Jeremy Perisho, and the rest of the Vestry members who give so much to help the church community to be the best that it can be and to budget for its many initiatives. You may think I am talking only about people like the volunteers in our Christian formation programs for children and youth who Sunday by Sunday do their best for our younger members. You may think I am talking only about the cadre of volunteers whose labors of love with silver and linens, flowers and music, ushering, acolyting, reading, and administering the bread and the wine, create a beautiful and hospitable space in which to worship God. You may think I am talking only about the volunteers who host coffee hour, oversee the web site, edit the Mantle, direct the Christmas pageant, write the checks, fold bulletin inserts, or see to everything from the boiler to the light bulbs. You may think I am talking only about the many committee members who organize our fellowship events, run the stewardship campaign, shovel/blow snow, bring communion to the homebound, cook and serve at the Salvation Army Soup Kitchen, lead the youth on pilgrimage or ASP, attend to newcomers, or organize the CROP walk or the Giving Tree. You may think I am talking only about those who oversaw the Together Now Comprehensive Campaign or run the Outreach auction. You may think I am talking only about those who make a financial commitment to St. E’s.
Without question, I am deeply grateful to all of these, more grateful than you can know. And I am grateful to everyone else. I am grateful to the adults who go to the effort to get to church with their children. I am grateful to the adults who come alone. I am grateful to all who try at any level to be a part of the St. E’s community and who are open at any level to a deeper relationship with God.
Whether you have only your toe in the water or you are swimming in the deep end, I am grateful to you for your participation in and financial support of the church. Your faithfulness and dedication, even if only the size of a mustard seed, are a huge gift to me and to God. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.
Barbara
Vestry Notes by Michael Comer, Member of the Vestry
W e began our December meeting as usual with prayer and reflection. Win led a session of readings, including Romans 12:1-8 and Matthew 5:14-16, which generated a discussion of Vestry members as spiritual leaders in the
church community. A number of vestry members piped in how they felt inadequate or unprepared for spiritual leadership. As our leader, Barbara pointed out with energy examples of the different qualities of leadership she has seen across both the vestry and church at large.
The majority of our discussion revolved around planning the 2014 budget, led by Cheryl Kimmens Franke, our tireless and dedicated Treasurer. Walter Morgan and Stuart Hamilton attended the meeting to provide more perspective from the finance committee. Right now, the budget is running at an approximate $50,000 deficit, which is made up of a $30,000 operating deficit and a $20,000 savings deficit (we generally save money every year for things like long-term building maintenance and sabbatical funds). We discussed a number of means of increasing pledges and reducing expenses. There are some opportunities that we already need to incorporate into the budget, such as rent on the rectory, as Jack and Andrew will not be living there. Most importantly: 1) please consider your pledge if you haven’t already done so, and 2) we will continue to carefully examine and assess our expenses. We are determined as a vestry to be responsible stewards of the church.
Barbara then led us in a hymn, “Arise, Shine,” which many of us were familiar with from Carol Davies’ leadership in church services past. Barbara led the alto “section” on her own.
Finally, led by Ian Springsteel, our tireless and dedicated Building & Grounds vestry representative, we discussed rectory repairs. Unfortunately, costs for the window-replacement project have risen by approximately $10,000 due to the

Wardens’ Words by Win Treese and
Jeremy Perisho, Co-Wardens
W ith 2014 right around the corner, it’s a natural time to look back on
the past year, as well as think about what the New Year will bring.
This past year has been a great one for St. Elizabeth.
We have accomplished so much:
• A terrifically successful TogetherNow comprehensive campaign to build for the future, including the initial
support for a full-time assistant rector position, expanding the worship space and attending to the facilities needed for
our growing parish, developing new outreach programs, and launching our endowment
The Rev. Jack Clark, our new assistant rector
The Rev. Faith Tolson, here since January, in fulfillment of our long-term need for staff leadership in the
education programs
Over 50 children participating in the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd
Over 60 youth participating in Journey to Adulthood program
8 new baptisms and 22 recently confirmed
Over 20 choir members and musicians, not to mention 10 members of the Youth Choir
About 155 families in our church, including 8 new families
– To name just a few successes.
We couldn’t have come this far without you and your commitment to St. E. Your continued dedication to our
community and one another is what makes us such a special place.
As the year begins, I encourage you to take some time to reflect on your own spiritual growth during the past year
and think about your personal path going forward. I know for me, there are always ways I want to improve.
Remember that your spiritual success is also ours. So be bold in you outlook and choose a way forward that
complements your strengths and abilities and ignites your passion.
I, for one, am excited to see the great things we’ll accomplish together during 2014 and beyond.
Happy New Year and thank you for all that you do.
As always, if you have any comments or questions, please let us know, in person, by phone, or by email at
Jeremy and Win [email protected]
Sudbury Historical Commission’s required changes in the materials, style, and trim work of windows we install. With the extreme need for repair, the vestry moved forward with approving the work. We then discussed other imminent upcoming needs, such as the driveway and painting. We agreed that we will continue to discuss and search for ways of funding repairs, as it is important for us long term to have a home we are proud of for our rector.
Finally, we adjourned, rather late, with a prayer from Barbara.
Michael

O ur Christmas services were wonderful with full participation by the Youth Choir at the Pageant Service where they sang "Ding Dong Merrily on High" like the angel voices
themselves. Maggie Watson, the Youth Choir Coordinator, kept everyone in the Youth Choir ready and prepared for the anthem and the balance of the service.
The late service at 10 (for carols) and 10:30 for the service was an amazing experience. We were accompanied by Trumpet (Thomas Small), Trombone (Tim Howard) and Alto Saxophone (Adam Howard). Bonnie Brown, violin, accompanied the organ, solos and hymns throughout as well as playing exquisite solo violin during communion . We had four soloists: Graham Daley, Kenter Davies, Sharon McGinnis, and Margaret Small. The choir was expanded with singers from the Briasco Stewart and Treese families as well as our section leaders from last year (John Knobel and Nadav DeSharone) for a total of 25 choristers in all. Finally, our anthems were kept well under control with the able conducting of Carol Davies. They made glorious music to celebrate the great Christmas Feast.
Now we turn to the Epiphany season with a return to our 'paperless' music which the congregation became expert at singing during the Epiphany season, two years previously.
With new members of the choir helping to create a lovely sound and a 'critical mass'; we can count on having all four parts each Sunday. Of course, we would enthusiastically welcome new members in each voice part and encourage you to consider joining the choir. The Youth Choir would also be delighted with new members.
We wish you a song-filled New Year.

Three very significant anniversaries for St. Elizabeth's church and chapel are rapidly
approaching. The internationally renowned architect of our beloved chapel was born
150 years ago and celebrations to commemorate this event are being planned. Devotees
and students of Ralph Adams Cram's work will be attending from all over the
nation. Cram was born on December 16, 1863 in New Hampshire and established his
firm in 1889 in Boston. A Google search will astonish you! His works are found all
across the country.
Today the Cram and Ferguson architectural firm carries on the name through Cram’s
great nephew, Ethan Anthony, president and principal architect, who has organized
these celebrations. He is also the designer of our Memorial Churchyard which was
consecrated in 1996 by Bishop Barbara Harris and our then rector. The Reverend
Randall Chase. For information regarding the celebrations go to the Internet and search
for Ralph Adams Cram Birthday Celebrations. There are several websites.
It's time for a celebration of St. E’s, and we need your help!
In addition to the 150th anniversary of the birth of Ralph Adams Cram this month, the
year 2014 marks the 50th anniversary of St. Elizabeth's church, and the 100th
anniversary of the dedication of the chapel. We'd like to celebrate all of these, and we
need your help to plan, organize, create, research, reflect, remember, or otherwise
contribute to how we do that. All ideas are welcome! If you're interested in any angle of
it, please get in touch with Win Treese ([email protected]).

Cardinal Seán O’Malley Accepts Invitation to Preach
at Sudbury United Methodist Church
Cardinal Seán P. O’Malley, Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Boston, has accepted an invitation to
preach during an ecumenical service of worship to be held on Sunday, January 12, 2014. The gath-
ering will take place at 4:00 p.m. at Sudbury United Methodist Church in Sudbury, MA. Bishop
Sudarshana Devadhar, episcopal leader of United Methodists in New England, will share in lead-
ing ecumenical worship.
The Rev. Richard Erikson, pastor of Our Lady of Fatima Parish in Sudbury,
and the Rev. Joel Guillemette, pastor of Sudbury United Methodist Church,
invited Cardinal O’Malley to speak during a celebration marking the 50th an-
niversary of Richard Cardinal Cushing’s historic visit to Sudbury United
Methodist Church on January 19, 1964.
Cardinal Cushing’s visit honored the members of Sudbury United Methodist
Church, Our Lady of Fatima Parish, and representatives of other Christian
communities in Boston’s Metrowest area with one of the first ecumenical visits made by the arch-
diocese’s episcopal leader during Vatican II. Father Erikson and Pastor Guillemette extended their
invitation to Cardinal O’Malley jointly, remembering that 2014 also recalls the 50th anniversary of
Vatican II and the significant ecumenical milestones it made possible.
The United Methodist pastor and Roman Catholic priest met in March 2012 while both were tak-
ing part in Sudbury’s monthly gatherings for clergy and other religious professionals soon after
Father Erikson’s arrival at Our Lady of Fatima Parish. In their letter to Cardinal O’Malley they
wrote, “Both of us give thanks to God for the opportunities we have enjoyed to taste the fruits of
ecumenical dialogue, Richard in military chaplaincy, Joel in an ecumenical seminary and the
Council of Churches in another New England state. We are also part of a collegial and active
clergy association here in Sudbury.”
The clergy colleagues see the January 12th ecumenical gathering as a time for Christians to take
stock of the progress being made toward greater church unity. They also believe that the service
of worship they will host, and the reception that will follow, will offer a model of civility across
differences at a time when towns, cities, nations, and even religious communities are too often po-
larized and divided.
Sudbury United Methodist Church is located at 251 Old Sudbury Road in Sudbury, MA. The pas-
tors and congregants of Our Lady of Fatima Parish and Sudbury United Methodist Church invite
all of their neighbors to attend.
