Crofton’s Wortmann NamedSecond-Team All-State

LINCOLN, Neb. — Crofton junior middle hitterMaria Wortmann was named second-team All-State for volleyball in Class C2 by the NebraskaAssociated Press. The announcement was madeon Tuesday.

Wortmann helped lead Crofton to its first statetournament appearance in 20 years. TeammatesAllison Arens and Kelsey Sanger earned honor-

able mention nods.Also receiving honorable mention all-state

recognition in Class C2 were Hartington CedarCatholic’s Karly Noecker and Bailey Steffen, Lau-rel-Concord-Coleridge’s Ellie Arduser andCameron Eddie, and Creighton’s Rebecca Egger-ling.

Earning honorable mention selections in ClassD1 were Allen’s Lindsey Jones, Gabby Sullivanand Lindsey Sullivan; Bloomfield’s Lexie Hauger;Hartington’s Shelby Hochstein; and Randolph’sHaley Schnoor, Michaela Strathman and McRaeStuffs.

Wynot’s Maggie Schulte was an honorablemention selection in Class D2.

SDSU Volleyball Adds TwoTransfers

BROOKINGS — South Dakota State head vol-leyball coach Phil McDaniel announced Tuesdaythat Carley Gerving from Lead (Rapid CityStevens) and Ashley Beaner from Sioux Falls

(Roosevelt), have committed to play at SouthDakota State next season.

A 6-foot-3 outside hitter, Gerving spent the2011 season at Black Hills State. At Sheridan Col-lege in 2012, Gerving had 172 assists andrecorded 234 kills and 76 blocks. Gerving was theLady Generals’ lone all-conference selection in2013, and was named to the Region IX All-Tour-nament Team after helping lead the team to a 20-win season. Gerving played in 36 matches andaveraged 3.04 kills per set, hit .247 and collected101 blocks.

Beaner, a 5-11, outside hitter, spent the 2013season at the University of Nebraska as a student.At Roosevelt High School, Beaner was a 2012 firstteam all-state, state all-tournament, all-city, all-con-ference and all-star selection. She also was a2012 state academic and conference all-academichonoree. The three-time letterwinner and two-timecaptain was named the 2012 South Dakota AAMiss Volleyball and the 2013 Outstanding FemaleAthlete.

Rapid City NIT Tourneys SetRAPID CITY — The North Invitational youth

basketball Tournaments will be held the first twoweekends of January in Rapid City. The events arefundraisers for the Club for Boys and North Mid-dle School in Rapid City.

The boys’ tournament is set for Jan. 4-5, withthe girls’ tournament set for Jan. 11-12. Each tour-nament is open to teams in grades 4-8.
