HISTORICIn 1974, Willie Drake traveled to West Virginia in search of rare American Chestnut among the area’s historic Appalachian barns. While combing the mountainside for usable wood, Willie realized there was an abundance of beautiful abandoned wood waiting to be reclaimed and reused...

Thus Mountain Lumber Company was born.

A Lifetime of AdventureFor over three decades, Mountain Lumber has trav-eled the globe in search of rare and beautiful woods within historic structures slated for demolition. Every piece of wood we reclaim is hand-selected for its richness in history, character and beauty. We care-fully select only the highest quality wood to ensure our floors are the finest in the world.

We believe every floor should be unique. That is why we custom-make our reclaimed and newly-sawn floors. Our expert prefinishing team will hand texture and custom finish your floor to create any desired look.

To maintain the tightest quality control, we inspect and mill every board we reclaim at our facilities in Central Virginia. By controlling every step of our manufacturing process, Mountain Lumber is able to provide not only consistent grading but also a wide variety of custom products. Anything you can imag-ine, we can create, from custom flooring patterns, to paneling, countertops and millwork.

Reclaimed Antique HardwoodsPrior to the 1900’s most barns were constructed us-ing wood that grew closest to the property. In Ap-palachia, that meant oak, chestnut, poplar, hickory and pine. The wood was either hand-hewn using an axe or squared with an adze and beam sizes were limited to what could be moved by man and horse.

As farming methods modernize, the barns of the past increasingly suffer from lack of use and repair. Eventually, they surrender to the elements they were built to keep at bay. Rather than abandoning the wood, Mountain Lumber reclaims it and restores it to its former brilliance.

Why Choose FSC® Recycled?Mountain Lumber's reclaimed wood flooring carries the FSC Recycled la-bel. The Forest Stewardship Council™ (FSC) promotes responsible for-estry worldwide. Promoting the use of post-consumer recycled materials helps alleviate the pressure placed on natural forests and prevents millions of board feet of rare and valuable wood from being discarded into landfills.

HEART PINEReclaimed Antique Heart PinePrior to European settlement, Longleaf Pine cov-ered as much as 90 million acres of land, stretch-ing from Texas to Virginia. The settlers and their descendants prized the Longleaf Pine for its size, strength and abundance. Sadly, decades of defor-estation and overharvesting have nearly eradicated this noble species.

Fortunately, this beautiful wood is still available through reclamation. During the Industrial Revolu-tion, mills and factories were built along the East Coast using heart pine as the primary framing mate-rial. Every year, more of these 19th century facilities become slated for demolition. Now, this rich amber wood can share its beauty with future generations.

Did You Know?Every Mountain Lumber reclaimed product is more distinct than its newly-sawn counterpart. Antique wood has tighter growth rings, indicative of the centuries before Colonization when trees grew slowly and naturally. Many antique boards contain character marks such as nail holes and saw marks that were created lifetimes ago using only hand tools. Although we offer consistent grading, each Mountain Lumber reclaimed floor is 100% unique.

HARVESTFSC Certified Harvest FlooringWhen Mountain Lumber began in 1974, we did green flooring the only way we could, by sourcing our wood from structures slated for demolition. Today, we find we are not alone in our desire to provide ethically sourced products. The Forest Stewardship

Council provides the strictest governance on how forests should be managed in order to protect them for future generations. Our FSC certification allows us to track each certified board to a responsibly managed forest; thus ensuring your purchase promotes responsible forestry.
