• Without trees to protect the ground, soil was lost from the land, so there was very little fodder for cattle to eat
• Firewood was so scarce that people had to burn cow dung instead
• Trees help the soil store water. Without trees, springs dried up and water became hard to find.

People like the Katakwas had to find ways to protect and restore the forest. Now Shinyanga is green again!
