Activity
• You are going to receive a scenario• In each scenario you will hear the story of a student,
their subject strengths and weaknesses, their career aspirations and a little about other aspects of themselves
• For your scenario you need to research the next step for your character and advise them of the options they face, in the next two years and also in the short term future (5 – 10 years)
• Be prepared to feed this back to the class

Kirsty’s story• Kirsty is 15 and loves drama. She
is on course for mostly A’s – C’s but her Maths is more likely to be a D.
• She wants to go to college but isn’t sure whether to do traditional A-levels, or whether a B-tec or Diploma would be better.
• She knows she wants to do drama, but is not sure what else.
• She has no fixed job or career in mind
Sarah’s story• Sarah is extremely academic.• She is on course for 12 A*’s
or A’s.• She is taking triple science,
which she loves.• She enjoys working
independently and thinks she would enjoy the opportunity to go to university.
• She is unsure what to do with her sciences in terms of a career.
Duncan’s story• Duncan is reasonably
academic and he is fairly interested in going in to the police force.
• His parents are very traditional and want him to do A-levels and possibly a degree first.
• Duncan had heard about a Diploma in Public Services but he doesn’t know how to explain it to his parents, or which route is best.
Sam’s story• Sam is 16 and has just left school• He didn’t pay much attention and
was more concerned about surfing
• At primary he was doing quite well, but through secondary his grades have declined
• He is at risk of not getting any C grades at all
• He lives for surfing and has no idea what he could do if he ever couldn’t surf
• He hasn’t really thought about the future
Simon’s story
• At 15, Simon is a gifted sportsman
• He’s been offered sponsorship and a place on a city team
• At the end of the last season he was injured and his knee needed surgery
• He is considering his future and needs to know what advice you would give him
Charlotte’s story• Charlotte works hard in school
but she is borderline C/D in many subjects.
• She should get a C in both English and Maths
• She doesn’t really have a favourite subject, but her options included History, Geography and ICT
• She likes working with others but has no real idea what she wants to do or what route she wants to follow next
Amy’s story
• Amy loves children and has always wanted to work with children
• She wants to know the best option open to her
• She should get 5 A* to C grades, including English and Maths
• What jobs could she also progress to?
