‘I like this place,’ says Ben.

He and Max are in a little boat in the ocean. Grandpa’s van is in the water, too.

‘We want to go deep under the water and look for fish,’ Grandpa tells the boys. ‘Do you want to come with us?’

‘No, thanks, Grandpa,’ says Ben. ‘It’s nice in the sun.’

‘OK. Please wait here for us,’ says Grandpa. He starts the van.

‘Bye!’ shout Rosie and Alice.

‘Have a good time!’ says Max.

The van goes down under the water.

Have a good time!

He hits the computer screen with his finger, but the van does not move.

‘Oh, dear,’ Grandpa says.

Soon the van is very deep.

‘It’s very dark here,’ says Alice.

‘Yes, it’s too dark to see any fish,’ says Grandpa. ‘Let’s go up to Ben and Max again.’

‘What’s wrong?’ asks Rosie.

‘I’m not sure,’ Grandpa says. He takes a screwdriver from his pocket.

‘Can you fix it?’ asks Alice.

‘Oh, yes,’ says Grandpa. ‘It’s easy for me to fix the van.’

But Grandpa and the girls can’t see behind the van, in the dark water.

Ben, Max, and Clunk are waiting in the little boat.

‘Clunk, please move to the left,’ says Max. ‘The sun’s light is hitting your metal body and shining in my eyes!’

Ben looks at his watch. ‘Where are Grandpa and the girls?’

The boys and Clunk wait for a long time, but the van does not come. Now they are getting scared.

‘The waves are getting bigger,’ says Clunk. ‘This boat is too little.’

‘But what can we do?’ asks Max. ‘We’re in the ocean!’

‘Look there!’ Ben points. ‘Can you see the birds close to those clouds?’

‘Yes,’ says Max, ‘but how can birds help?’

‘A lot of birds in the ocean like to be close to land,’ says Ben.

‘But how can we go there?’ asks Max.

‘That’s easy,’ says Clunk.

Look there!

Clunk puts one hand in the water and moves it fast in circles. The boat moves.

‘Your hand’s a motor!’ says Max. ‘Well done, Clunk!’

But Ben is thinking about Grandpa and the girls. Are they OK?

He hits the computer screen with his finger again. Then ...

Deep in the ocean, Grandpa works for a long time. He doesn’t see the squid on the van.

‘Is the computer OK now?’ asks Rosie.

Grandpa puts down his screwdriver. ‘Let’s see,’ he says. ‘Three, two, one ...’

The van is in a new place, but it isn’t in the right place.

‘Look at all the ice,’ says Alice. ‘We’re in the wrong ocean!’

‘Where on Earth are we?’ asks Rosie.

‘I don’t know!’ says Grandpa. ‘I don’t understand this.’ He hits the computer screen again ...

Where on Earth are we?

The van takes them to a new place again.

Grandpa looks out the window. ‘This is wrong, too!’ he says. ‘I don’t understand.’

‘We’re in a river,’ says Rosie. The water is too fast – the van can’t stop!

Alice points out the window. ‘There’s a big waterfall! Look!’

14

Page 16: Where on Earth Are We? · 4 Oxford Read and Imagine Explore the whole world of Read and Imagine. Follow Rosie, Ben, and Grandpa on their exciting adventures. Also available as eBooks

But Rosie doesn’t look at the waterfall – she is looking BEHIND the van.

‘Grandpa!’ she shouts. ‘There’s a big squid on our van!’

‘A squid?’ Grandpa laughs. ‘NOW I understand!’

‘Please be quick,’ says Alice. ‘We’re getting closer and closer to the waterfall!’

15

Now the van is at the waterfall.

‘Oh no!’ shouts Alice.

But Grandpa hits the computer screen with his finger again.

‘It’s OK,’ he says. ‘Let’s go!’

The van takes them to a new place. But are they in the right place this time?

16

Yes! The van is in the ocean again. ‘THIS is the right place,’ Grandpa says.

‘That squid’s happy to be here!’ says Rosie. ‘Look – it’s swimming down to the deep water!’

But Alice isn’t watching the squid. ‘Where are Ben and Max?’ she asks. They look and look, but they can’t see the little boat.

17

‘How can we find them?’ asks Rosie. ‘The ocean is too big.’

But Alice points. ‘Look! A little light is shining,’ she says. ‘What is it?’

‘I know,’ Grandpa says. ‘Come on! Let’s go to that light.’

Soon the van is at a little island.

Ben and Max are waiting on the beach. They are holding Clunk up for the sun’s light to hit his metal body.

The boys are very happy when they see the van.

‘Where WERE you?’ Ben asks.

Where WERE you?
