Iceland Airwaves FestivalSince the first edition was held in 1999, Iceland Airwaves has become one of the premier annual showcases for new music – Icelandic and otherwise – in the world. It’s made a heap of friends and won many fans along the way and been lavished with praise pretty much everywhere music is written about. This year the line-up include artists such as Mercury Rev, Beach House, Father John Misty, Braids and many others. Iceland Airwaves takes place between 4-8 November.

Odense goes horseIn October, Odense Congress Center will as usual, be transformed into a veritable mecca for horse lovers. You will be able to experience top international riders in both dressage and show jumping. The highlight for many of course, will be the recurring Reem Acra FEI World Cup Dressage. Interpreting Leonard Cohen A variety of hand-picked songs from Leonard Cohen’s versatile repertoire constitute the text of this theatrical concert in which three couples at a party form the plot. Without a script, but with a common thread of emotions and relationships, Cohen’s texts are depicted by Havard Rems translation and Rolf Heims direction. A plunge into Cohen’s universe with love, lust and melancholy as the ingredients. Performing at the Oslo Nye Teater from 16 September until 31 October.

EURO 2016 qualifying judgement dayOn 12 October it’s time for the final round of football’s European Championship qualifiers as Sweden take on Moldova at the Friends Arena. See star names such as Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Albin Ekdal, Nabil Bahoui, Erkan Zengin and Kim Källström take up the fight for one of the top spots in the group and direct qualification to the European Championship finals in France next year. It’s all set for a thrilling battle in Stockholm.

New Order back with a new albumIn September, legendary New Order release their first studio album in over a decade. On 8 November, the band will play Annexet in Stockholm for their only concert in Scandinavia. New Order are generally regarded as one of the eighties’ most influential bands with their groundbreaking mix of new wave, post-punk and electronic dance music. The new album Music Complete features guest appearances from artists such as Brandon Flowers (The Killers), Iggy Pop and Elly Jackson (La Roux ).

Stand-up success rolls onHenrik Schyffert and Fredrik Lindström continue with their magnificent and critically acclaimed comedy show ÄGD (Owned). Over 150,000 people have already seen it and this autumn sees the start of the fourth season in a row with yet another tour of Sweden. The duo have made a comedy show with stinging truths about how we look at everything with economic eyes. The show changes constantly and is regularly updated with new topical issues. LadykillersA stellar cast, quick dialogue and a humour filled script ensure the space between the laughs is short in this murderously funny show. This classic, award-winning comedy has it’s premiere on 16 September at Stockholm’s Oscar Theatre. Starring Johan Rheborg, Jonas Karlsson and Suzanne Reuter.

Jersey Boys18 September is the date for the premiere of Jersey Boys at the China Theatre in Stockholm. The award-winning musical has played to sold-out audiences on New York’s Broadway since 2005 and has even become a film. The Swedish version stars David

Lindgren, Bruno Mitsogiannis, Peter Johansson and Robert Rydberg as the band members and is directed by Anders Albien.

Come TogetherThe popular hit show Come Together is back again. 160 performances were played out in Denmark during 2009 and were seen by over 200,000 visitors. The new series of shows begins on 12 November at the Tivoli Concert Hall in Copenhagen, where you can once again experience director Nikolaj Cederholm’s interpretation of Beatles music. Be prepared for a fantastic stage show with colour, action and of course timeless music.

Playing Cards: HeartsThis is pure theatrical magic created specifically for the round room that is Østre Gasværk Theatre in Copenhagen. Playing Cards is an outstanding series of performances led by world-renowned director Robert Lepage. Hearts links the lives of families through culture from the 1800’s to the Arab Spring uprisings. Lepage combines faith, belief, magic and art in a complex system which is both sensual and spectacular. Premiere 14 October.

Diva and the BeastHumour and music of the highest calibre await us this autumn at the Chat Noir, Oslo. On stage, are two of Norway’s most celebrated humour and song artists, Reidun Sæther and Øivind Blunck. Together with four dancers and a 6-man orchestra, they deliver a magnificent, fun show with classic hits from several of the world’s great divas and rock artists. Until 7 November.

2. Light laptop for the proToshiba Satellite Z30The Toshiba Satellite Z30 is a slim, well-built and powerful ultrabook.

The computer is made of a dark grey magnesium alloy, and although it is quite thick to be an ultrabook, weighed in at just 1.17 kg. It is a well-built machine with a top notch finish. Unfortunately, the keyboard is a little less sensitive than most making it bothersome to type on.

The processor comes from Intel’s most powerful series and stores a generous 512GB solid- state drive (SSD). Despite the good performance, the battery lasts quite a long time - we got around nine hours use in an unscientific test, which is totally acceptable.

The screen has full HD resolution, which several competitors can beat, but thanks to the matt finish, can be used even outdoors. Like all matt screens however, it lacks a touch-screen function.

3. Compact luxuryDell XPS 13With the XPS 13, Dell has succeeded in both finish and performance. The computer has a 13 inch screen but the dimensions of the casing are as the 11-inch. The trick lies in the screen edges, which Dell has slimmed down to just five millimetres.

Both the lid and base are made of aluminum and the inside is covered with a rubber material with carbon fiber, which is comfortable against the wrists.

The screen in our test model was 3200x1800 pixels, which gives a pin sharp picture and the speakers were surprisingly loud. For everyday tasks and entertainment the XPS 13 is perfect, and with a card reader in the side, it becomes an attractive machine for the traveling photographer. The keyboard is comfortable with an admirable touchpad.

The set comes from the Gothenburg Opera where it has been played to sell-out crowds, and before that at the Swedish Theatre in Helsinki from 2012 to 2013. The current set can be described as upgraded with an even greater depth than the original version. Robert Noack stars as Karl Oskar, the role which gave him his big breakthrough and he is equally fascinated by the story now as when he made his debut in the role in 2012.

“The story about Kristina and Karl Oskar’s life journey is so very good. It still touches me strongly, coupled with it’s political undertones. The couple’s fate befell many swedes during the nineteenth century, as almost one third of the Swedish population at that time, emigrated to America. One third! And it wasn't that long ago either. Having that in the back of your mind for as long as this show has been with me has certainly broadened my perspective. A society that appears in one way today can be totally different in about 150 years. It does make you think”, explains Robert.

He points out that he grew into the role as the show evolved and expanded. Since the set’s premiere three years ago, he has also become a father, giving him a better insight in the scenes where Karl Oskar interacts with their children.

When Kristina starts up at Cirkus in Stockholm this September, it will be almost exactly 20 years since it’s premiere at the Malmö Music Theatre in 1995. The story of emigrants that left Sweden in the mid-1800s continues to constantly touch new audiences and it has now been seen by an amazing 1,254,317 people and recorded 960 times in total since that premiere.

Many who see the musical are reminded about the situation for migrants and refugees who are forced to break up their homes today. The story oozes empathy and understanding. By seizing on this and creating a dialogue there is the opportunity to show what everyone can do to make newcomers more welcome into our society. Through this co-operation, an evening is planned at the Circus on 9 September to discuss a re-think on integration.

“The integration of immigrants is one of the biggest challenges in Sweden today. I am proud that the Red Cross sees an opportunity to use Kristina from Duvemåla as a tool to create empathy with the new arrivals”, said Bjorn Ulvaeus, lyricist and one of the musical’s creators.

The story of how the infertile soil and the relentlessness of the church drove the story’s characters to leave Sweden to seek their future in the New World can be easily compared to our time. Issues of alienation and refugee children, creed and exclusion are as relevant now as then. In connection with one of the dress rehearsals at Circus, the Red Cross, Blixten & Co and Charlotta Teaterproduktion will initiate a new collaboration for the benefit of today’s Kristinas and Karl Oskars, i.e. new arrivals to Sweden.

HistoryKristina from Duvemåla is based on the author, journalist and social critic Vilhelm Moberg’s emigrant epic. The American dream grows stronger and stronger for a small group of people from Småland when famine, paternalistic and religious persecution make it unbearable for them to stay. The new country has land enough for everyone and offers those who venture onto the long, dangerous journey a refuge and a future. Some bold men and women build up the courage to set off across the Atlantic. Among them Kristina, Karl Oskar, Robert and Ulrika.

Wine from... Scandinavia?I t all began back in the late 1990s

with a few producers around Sweden, Norway and Denmark.

Since then, interest has expanded and today there are several commercial vineyards. One of them, the Gute Vineyard in the south west of Gotland, is run by Lauri Pappinen. He was one of the first in Sweden, both with growing grapes and producing wine.

“We started planting in the late 1990s and in 2002 we had a very small harvest, producing commercially about 300 litres”, explains Lauri, who says that although interest in growing grapes has increased in recent years, there are still only around twenty commercial growers and manufacturers that are authorised to make wine.

Most manufacturers are still very small and it usually takes between five and ten years before the vines start maturing and producing their true flavour, meaning you generally get a very unbalanced wine the first few years, explains Lauri. Therefore bottles tend to be expensive.

Hällåkra Vineyard in Skåne, is headed by Håkan Hansson. They have been in operation since 2003 and the vineyard covers 6.5 hectares with about 20,000 grapevines, which produce both red, white and sparkling wines. The grapes used are Solaris and Rondo, which are more suited to our climate, along with the more classic grapes of Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris and Auxerrois Blanc.

Scandinavia is probably not the first place that springs to mind when you talk about wine production. But after many years of hard work, Scandinavian winemakers are making themselves heard in the industry.

“We have been producing wine since 2008,” explains Håkan, “Conditions in the south are among the best for wine-making in Sweden”. Partly due to the climate, and partly because of the proximity to Denmark, which was Scandinavia’s first wine producer and thus could teach their neighbours a thing or two. Hakan is very enthusiastic about Swedish wine production, despite being prohibited to sell directly from the vineyards, which many see as a major stumbling block.

“Yes, it would be good if we could sell directly, but we knew the rules from the beginning. Instead, I look at it in terms of increasing production to move out of the ‘hobby’ stage and start growing the business. Whether we could produce enough wine to sell if it was a free market is another question”.

Looking forward, there is a need to focus on the younger generation - to get them interested in wine-making, working with our conditions and trying not to copy the wines from the southern parts of the world. “When I

have visits from more classic wine producing countries, they have been particularly impressed by the acid content in our wines and believe it's something we should nurture.”

“We also need to follow trends in the wine world. One of them is the increasing demand for low-alcohol and alcohol-free wine. I think we can find a niche position for ourselves, as it is easier to produce these types of wines in the north. If we get this to work, I believe we can become a wine producer to be reckoned with. Our wines are widely appreciated, from as far away as Japan.”

As well as Skåne, the islands of Gotland and Öland are home to vine-yards. One of them is Horn’s Vineyard on Öland. Founder, Alexander Horn, wants Öland to be the new Scandinavian wine centre. Horns wine is a Swedish-Catalan collaboration with the legendary winemaker, Joseph Louis Perez. In addition to white and red wine they make even cava.

Wine in Norway and DenmarkNorway has just two vineyards which produce wine. One of them is Kvelland Vineyard run by Knut Helge Thompsen, in Sørlandet which is as far south as one can get in Norway. He runs an organic production, which over the years has experimented to see what works best, for example, German white wine varieties. Like the swedes, he believes selling direct from vineyards would help enormously.

Denmark was first in Scandinavia when it comes to producing wine and production is spread across the country. There are around a hundred certified companies engaged in grapes and wine, with about 20-30 of them considered major producers. In Denmark, it is also possible to sell wine directly from the farms, which probably makes it easier for manufacturers there. One of the most noted is Örnberg Wine on Sjællands Odde on Själland. Producing mainly white wines, they were named Winery of the Year in 2014, when they made and sold 12,000 bottles of wine.

Yayoi Kusama

apanese artist Yayoi Kusama arrived on the art scene as the female equivalent to Andy Warhol in New York during the 1960s, expressing herself in a mixture of art, fashion and happenings.

Since then, her striking visual language and constant artistic innovation have earned her a position as one of today’s most prominent artists. In Louisiana’s upcoming exhibition In infinity we are told the full story of this Japanese artist who with prodigious productivity has created an entire world unto itself, in which colour, patterns and movement together bear witness to her fascination with the infinite.

The Louisiana exhibition presents the whole of Kusama’s working life. From early watercolours and pastels to her ground-breaking paintings and sculptures from the 1960s. With psychedelic films, performances, installations and political happenings from the 1960s and the early 1970s to shedding new light on works from the 1980s, after the artist’s return to Tokyo. Also on show are several of Kusama’s recent installations, and a series of new paintings by the now 86-year-old, created especially for Louisiana’s exhibition. The exhibition is the first

Kusama retrospective to take into account the artist’s interest in fashion and design but also includes several important works from her early period that have never before been exhibited.

Fighting for her artYayoi was born 1929 in Matsumoto, Nagano as the fourth child in a prosperous and conservative family. She experienced hallucinations and severe obsessive thoughts during childhood, often of suicidal nature. Her mother, whom Yayoi describes as an aggressive person, often threw away her drawings and battled with her to give up art and marry a rich man. Kusama refused, and continued to paint every day before going on to study traditional Japanese art in Kyoto. Disliking the professors’ obsession with precision and the hierarchy of the art world, she barely attended classes, instead concentrating on her own work.

general, and longed to go abroad. She wrote to the artist Georgia O’Keeffe after finding her address at the American embassy, asking her how to break into the New York art world. To her surprise, O’Keeffe replied, writing that, as she lived in New Mexico, she was out of touch with the scene but warned Kusama that it was tough there. Nonetheless, in 1958 Kusama moved to New York.

“Japan was a very feudalistic society and I felt I wanted to live more freely. So I decided to go to America. I thought lots of people were making beautiful images in America.”, she told the Telegraph in an interview last year. During her time in the US, she quickly established her reputation as a leader in the Avant-garde movement. But rumours of her activities filtered back through the Japanese tabloids to her family, who felt disgraced. At first, Kusama shrugged off their disapproval, but in 1972 her mental state worsened and she returned to Japan, where she was still relatively unknown. With her illness deteriorating she checked into a psychiatric ward in Tokyo in 1977, where she has remained ever since. Her studio, where she has continued to produce work since the mid-1970s, is a short distance from the hospital in Shinjuku, Tokyo. Kusama is often quoted as saying: “If it were not for art, I would have killed myself a long time ago.”

From here, she has continued to produce art in a variety of mediums, as well as launching a literary career, publishing several novels, a poetry collection and an autobiography. Kusama says that all her inspiration comes from within her mind, with no conscious thought, or influence from other artists, most of whom she dismisses. In 2008, Christies New York sold a work by her for $5.1 million, then a record for a living female artist.

After Louisiana the exhibition travels on to Henie Onstad Kunstcenter, Oslo, Norway, Moderna Museet, Stockholm, Sweden and HAM – Helsinki Art Museum, Finland.

The Barber of SevilleREYKJAVIK Rossini’s famous opera The Barber of Seville comes to the Icelandic Opera at Eldborg Harp concert hall with it’s premiere on 17 October. The title role of Barber Figaro, is played by baritone Odd Arnthor Jonsson, who had his major breakthrough as Don Carlo last autumn and was also voted newcomer of the year at the Icelandic Music Awards in the spring. What happens when nationalism, religion and ideology become more important than friendship? A gripping story about what happens between friends when put to the test. Playing at the National Theatre until 3 December.

Body scanners at Copenhagen AirportDuring September 24 new body scanners will be in use at Kastrup Airport. The aim is to replace body searches when the metal detectors sound a warning at security control. The body appears as an avatar on a screen, which in turn indicates what should be investigated. Similar types of scanners have been tested at Arlandas Terminal 5 in Stockholm during the summer – a project that will continue throughout the autumn before analysis and evaluation.

Chaos. More and more events in the future will emerge from chaotic processes, while academic knowledge loses value. A dismal scenario ? Not at all!

Author and management guru, Kjell A Nordström shares his vision.

When Kjell A Nordström spoke at an event in Stockholm this spring, he looked somewhat like an east- european villain from an early Bond film. In this interview he reckons he is more like the chaos theory scientist played by Jeff Goldblum in Jurassic Park.

The tall, thin man with the shaved head, thick-rimmed glasses, and the friendly eyes may not appear like a Doctor of Economics at first glance. Though, after acheiving a Doctorate of Commerce in 1991, he has had time for a lot of other things (even before he took his doctorate he trained as a technical engineer).

He has written a number of books, with Funky Business being his break-through (which he wrote with Jonas Riddarstråle) in 1999. There have been other collaborations with Riddarstråle since then, and last autumn came a new book co-written with Per Schlingmann, former Party Secretary of the Moderaterna political party and now PR consultant. The new book - Urban Express - has the subtitle “15 urban laws to help you navigate the new world that is being taken over by women and cities”. That’s right, women and cities - particularly together - will dominate... but we will come back to that.

A chat with Kjell A Nordström on macro-economic trends leads to some unexpected side topics. Not only Jurassic Parks chaos theory, but he brings up Gangnam Style, piling work in the old Venice, Hell’s Angels, a furnace expert from Sandvik and the Bible to name but a few.

But it is probably wrong to call them side topics. Rather, they are examples which clarifiy his thoughts and observations. That in itself explains his idea that chaos theory is an appropriate way of looking at our world right now (yes, there was Jeff Goldblum’s Jurassic Park character).

Butterfly effectWhen we connect everything together - both people and gadgets - there will be more and more chaotic processes. The butterfly effect is the classic explanation for the chaos theory, where the flapping of a butterfly’s wings can eventually lead to a hurricane on the other side of the earth. “It is a question of one small change which creates a large effect”, explains Nordström.

That is exactly what will happen in the future, when we least expect it, because the large inter-connected network we create is difficult to see.

“What may trigger a ‘hurricane’ is impossible to say - because it’s just chaotic - likewise, you cannot know when it will happen. But I don’t see it as something menacing or negative, just a part of life.”

In practice this among other things will mean rapid changes in consumer behaviour, thinks Nordström. He believes that this, for example, can quickly become an acid test for companies not clearly committed to issues of a sustainable society.

“We can already see clear tendencies, especially in the strong emergence of what is called circular


economy - where products can be recycled back in to the production system. H&M has a business model from the 1960s, which is based on having environmentally aware production in low-cost countries, where the clothes are sold cheaply and then discarded. It isn’t so circular, and they have already taken steps towards more recycling - but will it be enough in the long run?”

The fast-flowing information stream we have now means that what was previously regarded as far from the core business will now have a crucial importance, and therefore, that small changes can have big effects.

“Up until now it has been a minority rule, where perhaps 300-400 people have decided over politics, culture and economy. They go to the same cocktail parties, and certainly have a hold over one another.”

The main reason why they can no longer control like before, is the new media landscape. Everyone has the ability to publish.

“You can say to the chauffeur not to tell anyone about the hunting cabin or aircraft, but today that is pointless. It will come out in public anyway and will always looks much worse if someone has tried to manipulate the truth.”

It’s good to have gone through an education, that is a gate-keeper – but knowledge is stored in our mobile phones, which we all have access to. Therefore, other knowledge has a clear increased value.”

He calls it the “silent” knowledge, which cannot be taught, but which is learned through experience, or socialising with other people - and preferably those that are outside your own circle.

“Silent” knowledge could be what made the pile workers of the old Venice succeed in building sustainable foundations despite the miserable conditions, or what made that the developers at Sandvik turn to the furnace expert in the workshop - he could quickly work out the correct hardness for the newly developed parts in order to dovetail with the old.

And finally, to urban development and women’s dominance. Scientists predict that 75% of the world’s population will live in cities by 2050. Today, it is 54% and a hundred years ago it was just 10%.

“What we mistakenly call capitalism should actually be called innovationism, for it is innovation that creates capital. From what I know there is nothing in the Bible telling us that they had capital in the beginning.”

And innovations are based, in turn, on a few known things which when combined become something new.

“In the city there is a large concentration of things known, and therefore the best conditions for innovation. Additionally, “silent” knowledge is required which we gain with socialising with others, and even that is easiest to do in the cities.”

At the same rate as cities grow, women are increasingly dominating, and will continue to do so in business, politics and culture.

More and more educations are dominated by women and the persistent wage gap is set to be reversed. Already ten years ago women aged 21-30 years earned 40,000 SEK more per year than their male colleagues. Nowadays young single women earn more than their male counterparts in 147 of America’s 150 largest urban areas.

“But the need for “silent” knowledge means it will still take a while before women start dominating the board-room. It takes roughly 15 years for a newly qualified student to move up to

Hell’s AngelsIt is now when he refers to the Hell’s Angels, which are controlled by a few hundred “Full Members”. In the same way that men in the upper echelons of society have governed Sweden. Under this top layer are “Prospect Members”, who have fought to climb up the scale from “hang-around” level.

Another change in society are views on knowledge. Nordström himself teaches at the Stockholm School of Economics, but despite that he is party to the case. He argues that knowledge which is recorded and articulated - i.e. that which higher education traditionally revolves around - is rapidly decreasing in value. Not that it’s going to be useless, but it will continue to be necessary but not sufficient.

“This affects today’s marketers. Anyone who wants to deliver a message today must do something that I think is so good that I eagerly want to share it with others”, says Kjell A Nordström, before he pulls on his jacket (black of course) and sits on the bike to go to the gym.
