Shavuot occurs on the sixth day of the

Hebrew month of Sivan. The name

“Shavuot” (Weeks) reflects the fact that

there are precisely seven weeks - a week

of weeks - between the first day of

Passover and Shavuot.

Unlike Passover, there are no major rituals to concretize

the observance and celebration of Shavuot: no Rosh

haShana shofar, no Sukka, no Hanuka menora, no Purim

gragger, no Passover matza. There are only two customs:

eating dairy foods to reflect the Land of Milk and Honey,

and the study of Torah.

Shavuot is a major Festival, meaning its origin is in the

Torah and it is one of the three Pilgrimage Festivals. It is

thus just as holy and just as important as Passover and

Sukkot. The significance of Shavuot is monumental,

celebrating the completion of the freedom that our

ancestors were granted on Passover: true freedom comes

when one is able to study Torah, to use one’s intelligence

to create a better world. Accordingly, the Torah reading

for Shavuot is the Theophany at Sinai, the giving of the Ten

Commandments to the Israelites gathered in the desert.

As a major Festival alongside Sukkot and Passover,

Shavuot should be observed as a day marked by

attendance at worship services and gathering together

with friends to study in the evening or through the day.

This year, Shavuot begins Saturday evening, June 11th and

continues through Sunday, June 12th. On Saturday

evening, we join together for a dairy meal, a brief

service that includes Havdala, and a panel presentation on

End-of-Life decisions and medical ethics. The Sunday

morning service includes Yizkor, and features actively

A THIMBLE OF THEOLOGY

What happened at Sinai? Moses heard the inner voice –

he became an ear that heard what the universe was saying

to him – and communicated it to others, who then

integrated it into their own souls. Torah is the way that

Moses and his generation understood and recorded their

calling to a higher purpose. We study Torah to understand

the way in which we hear the Divine Voice, as did those

before us and those who will follow beyond our lives.

-- David S. Ariel (adapted)

receiving the Ten Commandments.

Shavuot is our reminder of the words we

recite every morning during the

Shahareet service:

LEELMOD U-L’LAMAYD

LEESHMOR V’LA-ASOT

U-L’KA-YAYM ET KOL DEEVRAY TORAH B’AHAVA.

To learn and to teach,

to make it our own as we act on what we learn

and give life to each word of Torah with love.

Shavuot is our active reminder to help our children and

grandchildren, and all the children in our schools and

shuls, to work towards the overall goal of living the eternal

message of Torah with love, thereby filling Jewish life with

joy and meaning.

S’FIRA: COUNTING THE OMER

For seven weeks - from the second evening of Passover

until the evening preceding Shavuot - we commemorate

the measure of barley (known as the Omer) that our

ancestors brought to the Temple in Jerusalem as a

thanksgiving offering for the Spring harvest. As we begin

each new day during this 49-day period, we assign a

number to it.

The period of counting is called S’fira, and it creates a

bridge between Passover and Shavuot. The exodus meant

that we were physically free from slavery in Egypt;

revelation at Sinai (the theme of Shavuot) enabled us to

be spiritually free to study Torah and to enhance our lives

with depth and meaning. The message of S’fira is that

physical freedom without spiritual freedom is incomplete.

As we count the days, we learn the very valuable lesson to

made each and every day count.

The CBA Book & Movie Club

will take a summer break for June & July. The next

meeting will be on Thursday, August 18th at Panera

(across from Springs Plaza). We meet at 7 PM. Anyone

interested is welcome to join us at any time.

Have a great summer and we will look forward to seeing

you in August.

August Selection:

The Secret Chord: A Novel by Geraldine Brooks

A rich and utterly absorbing novel about the life of King

David, from the Pulitzer Prize–winning author of People

of the Book and March.

The Secret Chord provides new context for some of the

best-known episodes of David’s life while also focusing

on others, even more remarkable and emotionally

intense, that have been neglected. We see David

through the eyes of those who love him or fear him from

the prophet Natan, voice of his conscience, to his wives

Mikal, Avigail, and Batsheva, and finally to Solomon, the

late-born son who redeems his Lear-like old age. Brooks

has an uncanny ability to hear and transform characters

from history, and this beautifully written, unvarnished

saga of faith, desire, family, ambition, betrayal, and

power will enthrall her many fans.

The winner of the $1,000 Visa Gift Card

will be announced in the May 31 blast!

Mitzvah Brigade

Our amazing team will not be taking the summer off, so

we can insure our members still receive any needed

support.

Please join us for our next brunch/meeting

June 26 at 10 am. Sunday, June 26

10:00 am at CBA

Please feel free to start brining in items for us to sell!

Proceeds will help cover the cost of A/C repairs and

maintenance for the year.

The Relationship Talk

Do any of the following sound familiar?

“I feel like I am never heard!”

“We are always fighting!”

“We can never agree on anything!”

“I don’t trust my partner!”

“If things don’t change soon, I am leaving!”

“I feel unappreciated!”

“This is just not fun anymore!”

We will be looking at the ways that couples communicate and skills to open the

doors to healthier communication.

We will talk about:

How to create a safe place to talk

Timing is everything

How to be heard

How to be a better listener

Creating a plan to move forward together
