Steve Burnham (left) and Carly Falzon, both in Dietary, were named by the Strive for FIVE committee as 5-H Club members since the
last issue of the Concord Communicator . Steve, a one-year employee and a cook in the Dietary Department (days)
received two nominations in the areas of Hospitality, Happiness and Hope. Joan Tharp in Housekeeping says, "Steve does a fantastic job in dietary. He not only serves great food, he also dishes out Hospitality, Happiness
and a huge smile to everyone he meets.”
Carly, on staff for 2 ½ years, was nominated for Happiness and Hospitality
by Jen Musick, LPN. “Carly always has a smile on her face. She interacts well with the staff and, most importantly, the residents. Carly greets the
residents as they arrive at the dining room. Carly doesn’t just serve the meals, she truly makes the Vineyards dining experience a warm one,
making our residents feel they are at home.”

Chaplain Jim Kulma Pastor Jim has accepted a spiritual call to serve as a staff Chaplain at Metro Hospital. His last day here
will be January 8. A Sending Service of farewell will be held
during worship in the Chapel at 10:30 a.m. A celebration will be
held on Main Street after the Service from 11-noon. A second
reception for staff and other well-wishers will be held at 2:30 p.m.
Jim has served our campus almost 5 years. In addition to the usual
duties of a Chaplain, Jim has made a significant, positive difference in the life of our
campus with his Biblical Storytelling, his gift of music, and his twice weekly Tai Chi classes.
A fun-fact is that Jim preached 462 sermons (two individualized
messages a week) while at serving at LHCR.
Godspeed Jim, and God’s richest blessings in your new Ministry!
Judy Hoes recently celebrated her 30th Anniversary
in the LHCR Laundry Department.
CEO Charlie Rinne & his wife Jana, and COO Greg Wiechert & his wife Karen recently hosted LHCR staff
members at a Monsters Hockey game at The Q. The group was treated to a VIP evening complete
with transportation in the LHCR limo van, dinner, and amazing suite seats (AKA “sweet” seats)!
May God prosper you. An expression of good wishes to a
person starting a new journey.

Health Focus in the New Year Over-indulging over the holidays can set us back, but only temporarily. Let’s say you indulged in more sweets than typical – perhaps pecan pie with whipped cream, eggnog and chocolate mints...that’s over 900 calories! The walking.about.com website can tell you just how many miles you’d have to walk to burn those calories (in this case, more than 9 miles.) What’s done is done. Now move on!
Karin Palmer, RD, LD, and co-creator of the EASEy weigh group weight management program says, “If you get a flat tire, don’t flatten the other three.”
If you want to start making healthier choices in 2014, here are a few tips to help you stay accountable: Write it down – Journaling is one of the most successful ways to learn your habits and correct
your mistakes. Writing things down creates accountability.
Picture it – visualization is an excellent tool for keeping you focused. If you have trouble picturing what you want, put pictures or written reminders where you can see them. Practice stress reduction – deep breathing, meditation and other activities that reduce stress will
help keep your head clear, help you sleep better, and help your body to function more
efficiently.
Did you know you can break a bad habit in 30 days? Take small steps. Don't try to do everything at once. Only try to change one habit at a time. Repeat the behavior you're aiming for as often as you can. The more a behavior is repeated, the more likely it is to become "instinctive."

Post Holiday Detox Diet When overindulging over the holiday happens, try eating these foods to get rid of the bloat and put a little pep back into your step. When you head to the grocery store, stock up on foods high in potassium, folate and water, which help the body regulate sodium and flush out your system. Translation: leafy green, orange and red colored vegetables and fruits. And don't forget to drink water. Lots and lots of water. The best part? You won't have to cook a thing.
Stock up on these detox foods:
Cantaloupe: The melon is high in potassium and folate, making it a miracle food
that helps maintain key body functions including managing sodium (and ridding your body of puffiness) and digestive health.
Tomatoes: They are a natural diuretic that help reduce puffiness.
Asparagus: Asparagus helps aid digestion, which can help fight belly bloat the
day after a food binge, and is a diuretic that helps flush out your system. The high protein content can also help boost your metabolism.
Bananas: Bananas are high in potassium, which helps offset the effects of sodium in your body.
Water: This one's a no-brainer: drink water. It helps
reduce puffiness and move waste through your system.
Cranberries: Cranberries are an antioxidant with natural diuretic effects that help
rid our bodies of toxins. Choose cranberry juices that don't have a lot of sugar, which counteracts the benefits.
Avocado: Avocado is high in potassium and fiber, which
help manage sodium in your body and maintain your diges-tive health. Just be sure to eat it without adding salt.
Oranges: Eat an orange and help your hands and feet shrink back to their normal
size thanks to potassium, which helps rid the body of sodium.
Cucumbers: Cucumbers have a high concentration of water in their composition and
are natural diuretics.
Carrots: The potassium in carrots helps reduce puffiness by helping the body get rid of sodium.
Spinach: Few foods stack up to spinach in terms of health benefits, which is why it's no surprise the
potassium in this superfood makes it great for helping to relieve swelling.

Staff Birthdays—Wishing you a happy day!
Dear Team:

I appreciate you and the consistent approach of support and love you show to the residents and families we serve.
You are part of over 300 employees serving almost 200 residents on a daily, 24/7, basis. The job you do is AMAZING! You choose to be vocation driven versus job driven. When you love your job, those we serve see the professionals you are making a positive difference in their lives.
Proud of you!
Blessings, Charlie
