GREETINGS, FRIENDS!The Y is WHERE YOU BELONG.

That statement should hold true for you, but also for your children, your neighbors, your co-workers, your friends and the countless people you pass each day—at the grocery store, post office or dry cleaner. Because that’s the essence of the Y. The Y is where everyone belongs.

We bring children, women and men—just like you—together to nurture the potential of children and teens, improve health and well-being, and foster a sense of social responsibility, so everyone has the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive. Much more than a gym or child care center, the Y is a deeply rooted nonprofit committed to strengthening families and changing lives in the communities we serve.

You know the current needs as well as we do: children in need of safe, affordable care and educational support, teens in need of positive role models and age-appropriate activities, and families in need of a place to spend quality time together where they can grow in spirit, mind and body. The Y is committed to meeting these needs and others through programs such as preschool, camp, youth and adult sports, family time, and health and wellness. To this end, you’ll notice some changes and exciting new offerings—from family group exercise classes and events to running clubs and social engagement opportunities.

Every day, there are new challenges that create a greater need for the work we do. That’s why the Y is committed to engage, advocate for, connect and serve all, so that our families and communities are united and strong.

For a better you. For a better community. For a better us.™

Give your child the best summer ever! Few experiences are as special as camp, where kids and teens have fun while building self-confidence, gaining independence and creating their own community.

The B.R. Ryall YMCA summer camps provide youth with supervised activities that nurture their spirits, challenge their minds and strengthen their bodies—while teaching values, teamwork, conflict resolution and leadership skills. Campers enjoy sports, swimming, crafts and nature, as well as learn the importance of healthy choices and active lifestyles.

With the Y’s core values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility as our guide, we focus on encouraging children to have fun, test their limits and explore their potential.

ABOUT OUR STAFFOur trained camp counselors are key to our success—fostering a sense of belonging and delivering fun experiences that keep families coming back year after year. That’s why we take such pride in hiring camp staff who are responsible, mature, considerate, enthusiastic and passionate about working with children and teens.

Your child’s safety is the number one priority. Each counselor is required to complete a series of trainings that include: bloodborne pathogens, bullying, abuse prevention, pool safety, emergency procedures, customer service, and implementation of age-appropriate games and activities. In addition, all staff hold First Aid and CPR certifications.

BEFORE- AND AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAM

WHAT THE Y MEANS TO US...KIDS’ PERSPECTIVE: DREW & LEXI MATTSON“At Safe ‘n Sound, we get to see our friends before and after school, and make new friends too. We can also do homework, play games, have free time and watch movies as a treat.

We like the staff because they will always play games and have cool equipment for us like hula hoops. Also, they are there to help us fix problems and do homework. The B.R. Ryall YMCA means a lot to us.”

MOM’S PERSPECTIVE: SHANNON TULIAN“Safe and Sound is extremely important to me. As a working mom, I love that I drop the kids off at school and pick them up there in the afternoon—with their before- and after-school care all in the same place. I know when I drop them off they are in a safe environment.

Drew and Lexi get time to not only work on homework, but also to let go of pent up energy from the day. The staff does a great job at keeping me informed about activities the kids are doing or just how they are doing.”

Today, all families can find their second home together at the Y.

Y GUIDES AND Y PRINCESSESThe Y has long been a place where families come together and create memories. Our parent/child programs—like Y Guides (dads and sons) and Y Princesses (dads and daughters)—promote quality facetime that’s actually spent face-to-face, not over a phone.

With a menu of activities including camping, a museum sleepover, a daddy-daughter dance, a hayride, bowling and Pinewood Derby, you decide what to attend based on your schedule. The time commitment is flexible, but the unique bonding you and your child experience is invaluable. Learn more at www.logewhego.org.

GROUP SWIM LESSONS

B.R. RYALL YMCA 2016 Spring • Summer • Camp WHERE YOU BELONG www.brryallymca.org 19

Here at the B.R. Ryall YMCA, we are proud of our rich history of teaching children to love water and to learn to swim.

Swimming is an important life skill that all kids should learn at an early age. Our classes help little ones gain the confidence and skills necessary to be safe and have fun in the water—which will later bring a lifetime of memories and experiences.

Our lessons are structured to promote incremental and consistent improvement. Each level has been developed for the specific needs of that age group. Class sizes are small to allow the maximum amount of student to swim instructor time—ensuring everyone learns skills appropriate for their abilities in a safe environment.

PARENT/CHILD SWIM (ages 6-24 months) 100, 110Parent/child classes are designed to help your child acclimate to water. Play-based instruction varies based on comfort level and age. Classes are held in the small pool.

CLASS NOTES: Children must be 6 months old by the first class. Children not yet potty-trained must wear swimsuits with swim diapers and tight-fitting rubber/plastic pants. Only one adult may accompany the child in the water.

100 Tuesdays 9:30-10 a.m.110 Saturdays 8:35–9:05 a.m.

PARENT/CHILD SWIM (ages 25-35 months) 210, 220This transitional class is for young children who still need to be accompanied by a parent in the water. Building upon the skills from the previous class, this program will ready your swimmer for traditional group swim lessons. Classes are held in the small pool.

210 Tuesdays 10:35-11:05 a.m. 220 Saturdays 11:30 a.m. to noon SPRING: $85 member $140 non-member SUMMER: $60 member $100 non-member

The world is 71 percent water.Your kids are 100 percent curious.

Teaching children how to be safe around water is not a luxury; it is a necessity.

Drowning is the leading cause of death for children ages 1 to 4, and the second leading cause of death for children ages 5 to 14.

The Y introduced the country to the concept of group swim lessons more than 100 years ago. Today, the Y remains the most accessible community resource to prevent drowning.

Swim lessons save lives. With summer approaching, there’s no better time to enroll your child in lessons.

SWIM LESSONS: FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONSHow long will it take my child to learn how to swim? There are many factors that play into learning to swim, and it also depends on your definition of “swimming.” Most students continue with us until they graduate, but some parents just want their children to know the basics. Every child learns at their own individual pace, so it’s impossible to determine in advance how long it will take.

It is important for parents to have realistic expectations for their children. Please avoid comparing your child to others. Positive reinforcement and consistency is vital for your child’s success. Regardless of what the final goal may be, we feel it’s important that the child learns to have a love for and respect of the water.

What happens on the first day of class? Please arrive 10 minutes early for check-in, and feel free to stay on the pool deck to ensure your swimmer is comfortable in the new environment.

The first class will be divided into two parts. The first half will be allocated to assessing your child’s skill level, and the second half to building a relationship with your swimmer’s instructor.

What is the Observation Policy? To provide a focused learning environment for the swimmers and instructors, parents are asked to watch lessons on the monitors in the lobby. Parents may observe class on the pool deck on the FIRST AND LAST DAY of each session.

What should we bring to swim lessons? Each participant should come dressed in a swimsuit (non-potty trained participants must wear a swim diaper), and bring their own towel and goggles. Please do not bring swimming aids, life jackets or toys.

What if my child misses a class? To ensure quality and consistency in swim instruction, there is no provision made for missed group classes. A private makeup session may be scheduled for $25.

What if the class I want to register my child for is filled, or I don’t see a class for my child? If a class is filled, or you believe your child’s age/level is not listed, please contact Jen Plodzien at 630.547.2007 or [email protected].

Why does the pool close when there is lightning in the area? Does my child get a makeup class if the pool closes? To ensure the highest level of safety for our members and program participants, the B.R. Ryall YMCA has adopted a policy to close the pool when lightning is present or when there is an imminent threat of lightning. The pool will remain closed until 30 minutes after the last evidence of lightning is present. If the pool closes due to weather, classes will be cancelled and will not be rescheduled.

OPEN AND LAP SWIMOPEN SWIMOpen swim times are set aside for families to enjoy each other, play games or practice swimming skills. Involve the whole family and spend quality time together in the water.

LAP SWIM Our large pool is a 25 yard 5-lane competitive pool. During these designated times, we have lanes reserved exclusively for lap swimmers, as well as one lane for water walkers.

For schedules, stop by the Member Welcome Center or visit our website at www.brryallymca.org.

POOL RENTALPOOL RENTALThe large and small pools are available for teams or special interest groups to rent year-round. Please direct inquiries to Bob Lugiai, Aquatics Director, at [email protected] or 630.547.2007. See page 9 for party rentals.

B.R. RYALL YMCA SWIM TEAM

DEVELOPMENTAL PROGRAM (age 12 and younger)On our team, athletes start in the Developmental Program. The coaches will work with your swimmer to nurture a love of the sport, while focusing on fun and teaching the values of attention to detail and listening.

AGE GROUP PROGRAM (ages 10-15)As your athlete turns 10 and starts to move into the junior high years, they transition into our Age Group Program. We take the skills swimmers have developed and start to teach them how to train like champions. There is a heavy focus on fine-detailed mechanical work and intensive training to help them utilize their talent to reach their full potential.

SENIOR PROGRAM (age 14 and older)High school age athletes have two options.

Our Senior Group provides a place on the team for athletes who are committed to other endeavors, but still love swimming.

The Elite Group is for the most dedicated athletes, focusing on giving them an opportunity to pursue national competitions and collegiate level swimming.

Team registration is now underway for spring and summer seasons! For more information, visit www.brryall.com.

Swimming is truly a lifelong sport—taking athletes from as young as age 6 all the way into adulthood. The B.R. Ryall YMCA Swim Team—one of the top teams in the state—offers an exciting opportunity for all levels of swimmers to experience this competitive sport.

Each swimmer is placed in the practice group best suited for age, ability and commitment level. Groups are designed to provide instruction from professional coaches in stroke technique, performance training and racing methodology.

AT HOME AT THE YWhen Tim and Masami St. George moved their family to Wheaton in 1994, one of the first things they did was join the B.R. Ryall YMCA. “We appreciated the good values of the Y, as well as the value itself,” shared Tim.

As a former competitive swimmer, Tim felt water safety was extremely important for his young children, so he and Masami enrolled Julia and Max in parent/child swim classes. After progressing through swim lessons, both kids joined the B.R. Ryall YMCA Swim Team.

While Julia later moved onto other sports, Max remained in the water and quickly excelled—in backstroke and individual medley (IM)—at a very early age. At just 9 years old, Max won the Illinois age group championships.

“Max was very loyal to the team, he was a coachable kid and he loved swimming,” shares Tim. “He made lifelong friends, but we did as well... it wasn’t just about the kids.”

Tim served on the Swim Team Board of Directors for years, both he and Masami volunteered at countless meets, and the entire family served as cheerleaders throughout Max’s 12 years on the team.

Fast forward to 2015, Max’s senior year of high school, and his sacrifices and dedication to the sport paid off in a few big ways. He broke the state record in the 100-yard backstroke, committed to swim at Duke University (where he is now a freshman) and qualified for the upcoming 2016 U.S. Olympic Trials in the 100 meter backstroke.

“We’re happy with the Y, and what it has done for Max and the rest of the family,” says Tim. “We all take advantage of our membership because the Y is in our bones—it’s a good fit for our family. We’d encourage others to be a part of the Y and be involved as much as possible with the swim team, because the whole family will get so much out of it.”

SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITYThe Y has been listening and responding to our communities’ most critical social needs for close to 100 years. We know that when we work as one, we can move people and communities forward. That’s why we are committed to providing support to our neighbors and opportunities for kids, adults and families to learn, grow and thrive.

VOLUNTEERISMWithout volunteers, little of what the Y does is possible. From helping with special events to coaching or mentoring, your skills and interests can make a difference here. Volunteering is more than just sharing your time and passion, it’s about the satisfaction of knowing you are helping people become stronger and giving back to your community.

Become a Y volunteer, and change a life or two—including your own.

Examples of Y volunteer opportunities: Swim instructors Preschool reading buddies Bus drivers – to and from schools Special event volunteers Share a talent: teach a class

Y SERVICE CLUBThe Y Service Club is part of an international organization that works to help YMCAs and people reach their fullest potential. This includes featured presentations, benevolent programs and fellowship activities. Everyone is welcome, and membership is not a requirement.

RECOGNITION OF COMMUNITY SERVANTS AND MILITARYIn recognition of the work and service of firefighters, police, military and clergy, we provide individuals in this line of work a 25 percent discount on their monthly fee.

SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMAt the Y, we believe we have something special—a sense of community—and that everyone should have access to it, along with our programs and services.

Last year, we were proud to share the Y with more than 300 children, seniors and families who otherwise would not have been able to become part of our Y family. It is only with the generous support of our donors and community partners that we can provide financial scholarships to individuals and families in our service area in need of assistance. Scholarships are awarded to those who qualify based on income, and are limited by the funds available for disbursement.

The Y—and our supporters who make the Scholarship Program possible—provide much more than a workout facility for the benefiting individuals and families. We help provide support and security that impact lives.

Below is a direct excerpt from one scholarship recipient’s letter.

“Wow, I have been moved by the staff at the YMCA! It is so wonderful how you help families like mine.

About one year ago, I found out I had brain cancer. Within five days I had surgery and a large part of my brain removed. Not only did it affect my abilities like speaking, reading and other cognitive skills, it also affected me physically. I have recovered some of the way, but I couldn’t focus on getting better as I have my children to care for. I learned that the YMCA offered scholarships and it might be possible for me to have my children attend the YMCA daycare. When I found out we were approved for support, I was crying with joy because now I can focus on getting better!

I have developed a new way of describing how I live my life. The key is to always be positive and to spread happiness around. I have taken an attitude to win, even if I have brain cancer. I hope to share a happy attitude and my family’s motto: Team Happy. Thank you so much for giving me a chance at getting better!”
