State of the States in OpenStreetMap
Where Camp EU session slides
Topics
The U.S. free data situation
The state of the States. TIGER data
More imports
250 cities routing grid
Duplicate nodes
'waychains' analysis
Target Market
U.S. is a big market
U.S. is full of...Potential OpenStreetMap mappers
(Insert GPS ownership stats)Potential OpenStreetMap developers
Potential OpenStreetMap data users
OpenStreetMap
The Free Wiki World Map
Open data
Easily editable. Lots of contributors. Community!
TIGER
Topologically Integrated Geographic Encoding and Referencing system
Government. Public Domain
Many organisations / agencies / sources
Massive free data set!
2008 TIGER imported into OpenStreetMapComplete street map! ?
TIGER problems
Misaligned roads Main problem
Connectivity along county borders
Over connectedness
Wrong-way motorway
Wrong-way motorway-link
Missing bits of motorway or railway
Only one way to represent a two-carriageway highway
Wrong road classifications
roads joined that shouldn't
roads that cross on different levels get intersection nodes
railway and roads moved so they intersect when they don't
etc......
More Imports
More government dataComing available as OpenStreetMap
open data in general gains traction
How to merge with TIGER data?
How to merge with community data?
How to assess quality?Suitable for a web mapping project
Fobbed off with low quality data
How to coordinate as a community?Decide not to import
Imports damage community
Psychology. TIGER data is off-putting
Fixing is not as fun as raw mapping
Need people editing
Basic Routing Problems
Discover data errors by routing
Focus on the interstate network
250 cities routing grid
Tortuous routes
>1.5 times longer than straight line distance
Duplicate Nodes
New Duplicate Nodes Map
All dupe nodes updated minutely
waychains analysis
Looking just at highway=motorway
Find ways joined end-to-end
Osmosis processing
planet.osm 160GB! or 7.3 GB bzipped
us-motorways.osm 308MB
Diffs
us-motorways-simplified.osm 55MB
us-motorways-simplified.osm

waychains!
Split waychains by 'ref'
HTML report
'All paired refs' map
Not too good so far
More waychain pairing needed
290 paired out of 1124 different ref values (25%)
Find problems
Ways which should join the chain
Lots of problems with ref values (unfortunately)

State of the States
Priority #1 - More community
Priority #2 - Fix data problems
Priority #999999 - Import more crap

Harry Wood's interest in internet collaboration and web2.0 technologies lead him to the OpenStreetMap project three years ago, as a hobbyist mapper, and as an increasingly passionate evangelist, community coordinator and developer. Turning this hobby into a profession, he worked at CloudMade developing core features of the OpenStreetMap website and working on products and services which help developers use OpenStreetMap data. In 2010 he joined placr.co.uk to develop their new geo API products, as well as operating as a part-time freelance OpenStreetMap consultant, and humanitarian OpenStreetMap activist. He was also on the organising team for WhereCamp EU
