Hardy, with solid bone structure, head “well set on neck … The foot is quite large for a donkey. The back is straight, flanks are large and hindquarters solid.”
Originally bred by shepherds for seasonal movement with flocks, “well able to carry heavy loads, with a docile temperament and good legs to cover the migratory routes … calm, patient, easy to saddle, to put to harness or to ride. He is very sure footed even on rough ground.”
