we need to make a point: think twice before you make your site searchable.

While many users want to search a site, some just want to browse it.

Also, does your site have enough content to merit the use of a search engine?

searching systems can and should vary asmuch as browsing systems or any othercomponents of web sites do, because allusers aren't alike, and information retrieval ismuch harder than most people realize

users don't want the same kinds ofinformation delivered in the same ways

Users' needs and expectations vary widely, and so the information systems that servethem must recognize, distinguish, andaccommodate these different needs.

The level of searching expertise users have: Arethey comfortable with Boolean operators, or dothey prefer natural language?

The kind of information the user wants: Do theywant just a taste, or are they doingcomprehensive research?

The type of information being searched: Is itmade up of structured fields or full text? Is itnavigation pages, destination pages, or both?HTML or other formats?

How much information is being searched: Willusers be overwhelmed by the number ofdocuments retrieved?

Searching only works well when the stuff that'sbeing searched is the same as the stuff that userswant. This means you may not want to index theentire site.

Search engines are frequently used to index anentire site without regard for the content andhow it might vary—every word of every page, whether it contains real content or helpinformation, advertising, navigation menus, andso on. But this does not lead to fruitful results.

searching works much better when theinformation space is defined narrowly andcontains homogeneous content

Users generally expect searching to beavailable, certainly in larger sites.

Search engines should not work poorly. to understand how users' information needs

can vary so much, and to plan and implementyour searching system's interface and searchzones accordingly.

grouping content into the top-levelcategories of an information hierarchy istypically the most important and challengingprocess. It deals with the questions such as

How should the content be organized? Byaudience or format or function?

How do users currently navigate thisinformation? How do the clients want users tonavigate?

Which content items should be included inwhich major categories?

Based upon information gathered during the researchphase, you must now create order

How should the information be organized and labeled atthe highest levels of the hierarchy? What types ofnavigation systems will be applied? How will searchingwork?

White boards and flip charts, high-level architectureblueprints, and scenarios are key tools at this stage

After the major issues have been worked out, latermeetings involve the consideration of more detailedorganization, labeling, indexing, and navigation systems.Detailed blueprints and Web-based prototypes will serveyou well in these discussions.

For collaborative purposes, white boards are unparalleled.

a blueprint is the very act of shaping ideas into the moreformal structure

During the conceptual design phase, high-level blueprintsare most useful for exploring primary organizationschemes and approaches

High-level blueprints are great for stimulating discussionsfocused on the organization and management of content aswell as the desired access pathways for users.

These blueprints can be created by hand, but we prefer touse diagramming software such as Visio or NetObjectsFusion. These products not only help you to quickly layoutyour architecture blueprints, but can also help with siteproduction and maintenance.

This involves communicating detailed organization, labeling, and navigation decisions to your colleagueson the site development team.

Purpose: They must map out the entire site so that the

production team can implement your plans to theletter without requiring your physical presence duringproduction.

The blueprints must present the complete informationhierarchy from the main page to the destinationpages.

They must also detail the labeling and navigationsystems to be implemented in each area of the site.

Disadvantages of Blueprints:they do not work well for helping people to envision the

contents of any particular page. They are also not straightforward enough for most graphic

designers to work from. In fact, no single format does aperfect job of conveying all aspects of an informationarchitecture to all audiences.

Because information architectures are multi-dimensional, it'simportant to show them in multiple ways.

For these reasons, architectural page mockups are usefultools during conceptual design for complementing theblueprint view of the site.

Mockups are quick and dirty textual documents that showthe content and links of major pages on the web site.

They enable you to clearly (yet inexpensively)communicate the implications of the architecture at thepage level.

In this phase the information architect collaborate with graphicdesigner to create design sketches on paper of major pages inthe web site.

Design sketches are a great way to pool the collective knowledgeof three teams in a first attempt to design interface for the toplevel pages of the site:

1. In the research phase, the design team has begun to develop asense of the desired graphic identity or look and feel.

2. The technical team has assessed the information technologyinfrastructure of the organization and the platform limitationsof the intended audiences.

3. the architect has designed the high-level information structurefor the site.

Using the architectural mockups as a guide, the designer beginssketching pages of the site on sheets of paper. As the designersketches each page, questions arise that must be discussed
