Tough tyres demand even tougher testing.

First choice for leading vehicle manufacturers.

Throughout the year, we show time and time again that there are no limits to our tyre testing at our test sites in the USA, New Zealand, Sweden, Spain and, last but not least, on our in-house track near Hanover, the Contidrom – which is also a sought-after reference track for independent experts. Each one of our winter and summer tyres from all over the world is thus tested under all kinds of weather and road surface conditions. It goes without saying that this all takes place using the most modern testing methods and measuring technology.

Vehicle manufacturers only use premium tyres that conform to the highest quality standards. To guarantee this, they commission more than 100 different tests. From maximum speed to wet and dry braking, handling, comfort and noise level as well as mileage: only if a tyre meets all requirements set by the vehicle manufacturer it will be used as original equipment. It ’s the only way to make sure that the tyre fits to the vehicle – whether it’s a sports car or compact class.

Award winning products. Where the EU tyre label stops, we begin.

While developing and testing our premium tyres, we consider each and every safety and performance aspect. That is repeatedly confirmed in independent tests around the world. The result: multi-award-winning tyres.

Besides the three main criteria included on the EU tyre label, there are many more performance factors that go towards making a genuine premium tyre. All the more reason to refer to other sources like tyre tests, manufacturers’ material and retailers’ recommendations in addition to the EU tyre label. When it comes to winter tyres in particular, the EU tyre label is of limited significance, because no information is given on winter properties such as traction in snow and braking on snow and ice.

When the summer comes, we let you stay on track.

For maximum driving safety, Continental recommends using tyres best suited for each year’s season – even summer. Because of the high temperatures which can occur, the rubber compound used in our premium tyres is much harder than the one used in winter or all-season tyres: even at high speeds and on wet surfaces the compound performs superior and the high tread depth provides tight grip on every road.

If tyre tread depth is below 3 mm, braking distance will be considerably lengthened and danger of aquaplaning quadrupled.

When the days start getting longer it’s time for a change. Take no risks when it comes to tread*:

Because 50% of all passenger vehicles run on tyres with the wrong air pressure, the tyre’s lifespan is significantly reduced.

Safety tips for summerSafety tips for winter

We offer the key to safe winter driving.

Defined by safety.

During the winter months ahead, cold temperatures and slippery road surfaces are expected. Drivers need to make sure their tyres are up to the mark. Especially in those European countries such as Germany, Austria and Finland where winter tyres are a legal requirement. Of course, no one can plan the weather, so it makes sense to be prepared by changing to winter tyres starting in October or when the average temperature falls below 7 ºC.

“Snow tyre” means a tyre whose tread pattern, tread compound or structure are primarily designed to achieve in snow conditions a performance better than that of a normal tyre with regard to its ability to initiate or maintain vehicle motion.

The Alpine symbol identifies winter tyres according to UNECE regulations (valid in the EU and various other countries) and the tyre regulations of the USA and Canada. The snow performance of these winter tyres has to be proven by objective tests and meet or exceed defined limits. These tyres provide high performance with regards to safety and control on snow, on icy road and in general at deep temperatures.

Because winter makes its own rules.

It’s when temperatures fall in autumn that road safety becomes even more important. The rubber used in summer tyres begins to harden at 7 ºC, reducing their grip on the surface. Tyres for SUVs and off-road vehicles from Continental perform superbly off-road and offer a high degree of reliability and safety. But the number of SUVs and all-terrain vehicles used mainly on city streets is increasing all the time. This is an important consideration when it comes to improving the performance of tyres from this vehicle segment. For this reason, our engineers rose to the challenge and took the tyre’s primary on-road use into consideration. The result: tyres for SUVs and off-road vehicles suited to high speeds on tarmac while also offering high mileage.

On-road and off-road performance.

Many SUVs and off-road vehicles are equipped with tyres carrying the “M+S” marking on the sidewall. The reason for this is that this vehicle category was first offered in North America where all-season tyres with “M+S” marking are customary. Within the tyre port-folio of Continental this applies for example to the product lines ContiCrossContact™ LX, ContiCrossContact™ LX Sport or Conti4x4Contact™.

“M+S” marking is officially defined in an EU directive as meaning: “a tyre with a tread pattern and structure designed to achieve better performance in snow than that of a normal tyre”. The performance of “M+S” marked tyres is therefore neither defined nor measured.

The snow performance of winter tyres is specified according to UNECE regulations (valid in the EU and various other countries) and the tyre regulations of the USA and Canada with the so-called Alpine symbol. Only tyres which meet or exceed these requirements may carry the Alpine symbol.

Useful facts about inflation.

Tyre pressure is particularly important for vans, due to the heavier loads they have to carry. It is calculated using the load index (LI), which expresses the maximum weight in kilograms that a single tyre can support. Each LI figure corresponds to a specific tyre pressure. A higher LI indicates a stronger tyre, which means that more air is required to inflate it correctly.
