1.A lack of skid resistance has beenidentified in accident analyses

as one of the main causes for roadaccidents by departments for roadsafety and transport. The number ofaccidents correlates directly to thenumber of vehicle registrations. Inorder to “identify” the high risk areasthe skid resistance properties of theentire motorway road network inGermany has been SCRIM-tested.Depending on the wearing courseaggregate type and the Polished StoneValue (PSV), a significant part of themotorway network is classed as beingat “caution level”, if not at “thresholdlevel”. Should investigations provethat road sections with a lack of skid-resistance cause a significant increasein accidents in wet road conditions,immediate action must be taken.Whisper-Grip®, the new road surfacetreatment based on reactive resinsand special aggregates provides thesolution. (Complies with Germanregulations ZTV-BEB-StB 02,German regulation for rehabilitationof concrete roads).

2.Noise pollution caused by tyres.

Traffic noise is “the bane ofmodern life”. New guidelines andregulations over the last few yearshave led to vast improvements inpassive noise protection. However,noise barriers don’t always meet thenecessary economical and ecologicalcriteria. That’s why active noise pro-tection should be of prime importance.The aim must always be noisereduction at source. An optimised,quiet road surface can be achievedwith Whisper-Grip®.

3.Traffic obstructions as a resultof road maintenance works will

increase even more in the future. Aquick and economic surface dressingsystem such as Whisper-Grip® benefitshighway maintenance, organizations,drivers and all other road users.

The Whisper-Grip® Safety Concept

Worn and polished road surfaces canachieve micro and macro texture bythe application of Whisper-Grip®. Themicro texture gives the road surfaceprofile peaks, i.e. the area in contactwith the tyre which increases frictionbetween tyre and road surfaces.A macro roughness between 0.2 and3 mm provides the road surface withexcellent drainage properties that arecomparable with open-pored asphalt,where excess water quickly drainsaway below the surface.

Whisper-Grip® surface dressings arecharacterised by optimised micro andmacro roughness that provide stronggrip and excellent skid resistance.Tests have shown that grip and skidresistance values between 50 and 55SRT result in twice as many accidentson wet roads compared with a valueof 60 SRT. Whisper-Grip® howeverprovides grip values between 70 and85 SRT. Even with regard to SCRIMmeasurements or the Stuttgart-friction-measurements friction values havebeen found to be excellent – the decid-ing factor in the elimination of aqua-planing. It is also been demonstratedby statistical analyses that accidentnumbers are drastically reduced whereWhisper-Grip® has been applied.

Tyre noise reduction through

The main cause of traffic noise is thenoise generated by the rolling contactbetween the tyre and the road surface.Heavy noise pollution occurs whencars travel at only 30 km/h and trucksat around 60 km/h and above already.

On Whisper-Grip® wearing courses thetyre noise is significantly reduced dueto a surface that is much more finely-structured. Noise measurementsaccompanied by frequency analysesdemonstrate this strikingly (see diagramon page 7). In bridge constructionalternative noise protection measuresare frequently impractical. Here tyrenoise can often only be reducedby applying Whisper-Grip® surfacedressing.

How does Whisper-Grip® work?

Whisper-Grip® is a surface dressingthat can be applied to both asphaltand concrete wearing courses.Whisper-Grip® is a two-componentreactive resin agent mixed with a highpolish stone value (PSV) aggregate(maximum particle size 4mm).

Electronically controlled applicationequipment is used to spray the correctamount of resin binder onto the drysurface. The rate and speed of appli-cation is determined by the pumpcapacity and the settings determinedby the operatives.

Immediately after the resin applicationspecial high PSV aggregate is scatteredonto the still wet surface. Dependingon the amount of resin applied, 1–2mm, 2–3 mm or 3–4 mm aggregatesare used.

After curing of the reaction resinthe strews aggregate that hasnot bonded is removed by roadsweeping machines.

Immediately after application

of Whisper-Grip® the road can be

re-opened for traffic.

The unique application of Whisper-Grip® ensures rapid installation. Shortlane closure times are also ensuredthrough the special formulation of theresin binder. These advantages havemade Whisper-Grip® the preferredchoice for road surface treatment,especially in tunnel road works.

Often tunnels only have two lanes andclosing one of them causes significanttraffic disruption. The fast applicationrate minimises the negative impacton traffic flow. Up to 20,000 m2

Grip-perfection a must

Whisper-Grip® surface dressings arenot just used on motorways and otherclassified roads – its unique applicationtechnology and numerous outstandingqualities have made it the preferredchoice for airport traffic surfaces.

The demands on the surface dressingare extremely high in this particularapplication. Whisper-Grip® has beensuccessfully used in areas whereairplanes de-icing takes place.

In wintry conditions planes are de-icedalmost continuously. This involveslarge amounts of de-icing agents (e.g.“Clear-Way” or “Safe-Wing”) thatform a gelatinous, slippery mass onthe apron. In order to keep the risk ofskidding as low as possible for aircraftand vehicles it is of paramountimportance to achieve high grip andskid resistance on these surfaces.

With a macro roughness between 0.2and 3 mm Whisper-Grip® provides anideal surface that quickly drains thede-icing slurry away from the contactpoint between tyre and surface.

During taxiing an aircraft’s nose wheelputs a heavy point load onto thede-icing surface. With the excellentbonding properties of its binder bothto the substrate as well as to thestrewn in aggregate, Whisper-Grip®
