Please give me the opportunity to make amends by leing me know when I erred and how I might improve upon the past year. My other goal is to make more time for celebration. I want to enjoy those amazing moments with Ginny and our kids, and to give space for savoring them. I hope to celebrate those minutes and hours in all of our lives when the con- nections between us hum with the music of our laughter and singing. The 13-paneled work spans the entire end of the room and utilizes a unique creative process that aims to push the limitations of a singular vision toward a more fluid and complex perspective. A composite of Temple life, the artwork began with each artist photographing various scenes, rituals and commu- nity members. That film was then rewound and ex- changed so that the artists could repeat this process over what the other artist has just photographed, eventually creating a surprising and complexly lay- ered document that includes landscape, community and congregation. The film was then scanned and digitally reworked to accentuate selected formal and contextual components that had been captured. Am Yisrael Chai digitally interweaves the images from the Jewish homeland with those of the Temple Beth El community, visually linking the two communi- ties together as one and speaking of the connection between the Temple Beth El congregation and Eretz Yisrael. Am Yisrael Chai! The art was created by Lisa Levine and Peter Ton- ningsen, who are a collaborative team of photogra- phers and university educators from California. They are particularly interested in creating artworks that enliven public spaces, involve the community in their art making process, and challenge the idea that art making is a solitary endeavor. We invite you to come by and view the artwork. Plan to come sit a while and take it all in. Am Yisrael Chai was generously supported by a Temple Beth El Family. Rabbinic Reflections

bRavely GoinG into the new yeaR

by Rabbi Jonathan Freirich

Each season of Judaism offers us different opportunities to elevate our lives

As Passover approaches we get to spring clean our house and perhaps our souls in anticipation of celebrating our freedom Chanukah gives us the chance to think about how we can bring more light into the lives of our families and communities In the month of Elul most of September this year leading up to Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur we get to review the past year as a way of making the next year even better

Going over the past year we may find -a catalog of celebrations that we want to remember and cherish -a litany of challenges we struggled with and overcame or with which we still strive to cope -or most likely a mix of the two including things we wish wersquod remembered more attentiveness to relationships and work and the balance between them There are probably many more

I always worry about all that I might have forgotten This year I am going to prepare for the New Year in at least two ways

I will do my best to make more time to listen to anyone who needs to talk with me From my own family and friends to our extended TBE family I want everyone to feel comfortable telling me where I may have missed the mark or stepped on toes Please give me the opportunity to make amends by letting me know when I erred and how I might improve upon the past year

My other goal is to make more time for celebration I want to enjoy those amazing moments with Ginny and our kids and to give space for savoring them I hope to celebrate those minutes and hours in all of our lives when the con-nections between us hum with the music of our laughter and singing

As the world struggles into our New Year let us open our gates to each other both for the alleviation of anything that stands between us and for the lifting up of our spirits in celebration together

VOICEWHISPER HIGH HOLY DAYS 06

The High Holy Days sometimes referred to as the Days of Awe represent the spiritual and religious pinnacle of the Jewish calendar At Temple Beth El we find ourselves grateful for this special time of the year In our busy lives we sometimes find ourselves out of control and not going in the direction we would like High Holy Days arrive to give us pause and empower us to choose our course for the future

High Holy Days begin with the festivities surrounding the Jewish New Year of Rosh Hashanah and then become more somber as they conclude after ten days of reflection on Yom Kippur the Day of Atonement Join us on this journey that allows us to take a hard look at who we are and implement change for the better

Temple Beth El welcomes everyone to worship with us for the High Holy Days Tickets are required for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur Please call Pam Linker at 704-749-3056 for more information
