Company structure:-

Board of Directors –11 persons - all specialist knowledge

Five permanent full time staff, two full time staff on 3 year contracts.

8-10 part time tutors to train specialist subjects as and when required

4 enrolments for Apprenticeships per year on average

regular industry training for seafarers

regular attendance/presentations at national events

Major events – AGM during Autumn each year -- Apprentice of the Year Award

Sea Fish Industry Authority – industry safety training Skills Funding Agency – Apprenticeships MCA courses – STCW 95 – First Aid, Fire Fighting, PST, PSSR

(soon – Proficiency in Security Awareness, Maritime Security Officer, Ship Security Officer, Anti Piracy Awareness)

Royal Yachting Association – industry & leisure safety training Room Hire – short/long courses, meetings & conferences

Holderness Coast FLAG N&W Cumbria FLAG Fisheries Local Action Groups Two FLAG projects running on opposite coasts 2 full time Training Co-ordinator jobs created Apprentices from each coast attending 10 weeks classroom/exams Returning to home and working on local vessels

Value to Whitby and district :

Regular payments to landladies & landlords whether summer or winter (apprenticeship accommodation)

Year round support of guest houses/cafes/restaurants for safety training

Policy for company to purchase goods & services locally wherever possible

Direct employment of local people

Support of local fishing industry through safety training, upskilling and diversification to other maritime opportunities

Financial support to Mission to Seafarers’ Centre through rent and also provision of catering for meetings & conferences

Establishment of sustainable training centre where others have not succeeded

Agreement during May 2007 with the Sea Fish Industry Authority to deliver/receive payment for delivery of their courses

Achievement of Customer First quality mark – achieved Summer 2006 and maintained to date

Achievement of Preferred Provider status with the Sea Fish Industry Authority working to their Quality System – and achieving highest UK audit.

Year on year steady improvement in apprenticeship achievement rates from 20% during 2003 to 70% currently

Successes !

£158,000 grant received during 2008-09 for expansion / upgrade of all training facilities

Achievement of nationally recognised technology award during 2010 and 2013 for production and use of bespoke 3D software for safety training

Successful achievement of changes to the “Apprenticeships, Skills, Children and Learning Act 2009” to ensure exemption from ‘employed status’ for apprentice deck hands – achieved a change in the UK law

Opportunities ........

Short term goals to expand company premises within the current building to obtain a quayside facility for delivery of 5 day MCA engineering course to obtain funding to install facilities & deliver navigational training and ECDIS on simulation equipment

to support local area aims to set up a local FLAG – Fishermen’s Local Action Group, funded by the MMO and which provides grant funding for many types of fishing community projects

Long term goal - to source funding for purpose built training centre to meet expected increased demand for wider maritime safety training
